Especially for those who want to diversify the picture in the game, let's look at how to install textures in Minecraft.
The first step is to find the desired texture pack. They can be found in large quantities on forums dedicated to the game. From the simplest to high resolution HD textures. In the case of HD textures, you should install and run the "MCpatcher" program in the root folder of the game to avoid crashes to the desktop. If the textures you selected are of normal resolution (32 and 64 pixels), then no additional actions are required.
After downloading the archive, check it for malicious code before installing the textures. In Minecraft, there is a separate folder for custom texture packs, which you need to find. The default game root folder is located at: C:\User\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft. Usually this folder is hidden, so it’s easier to find it by entering “.minecraft” into the search - with a dot in front of the name, to find only the folder that interests us. Next, look for the “texturepacks” folder and unpack the downloaded files into it.
After copying the files, launch "Minecraft". Installing textures ends with selecting the "Texture packs" option in the main menu of the game and determining the desired set. You need to start the game and in the main menu (the first screen with buttons) select “texture packs”. Next you will see a window containing texture sets (by default there is only one option in the downloaded client). At the bottom of the screen there will be a button “show folder with textures” - click on it. The game will automatically minimize to tray and you will be shown a Windows Explorer window with the textures folder open. It is to this folder that you need to transfer new files.

The only limitation on installing textures is the capabilities of your computer: the higher the resolution, the greater the load. I recommend using method No. 1:
1. Install the OptiFine mod (this is not a required step, but I recommend doing it)
2. Transfer the downloaded archive with a resource pack or texture to the resourcepacks folder
3. Launch the minecraft game itself
4. Go to Settings > Resource Packs
5. Select the resource pack you need and it will be installed as the default.
Method number 2:
1. Download the MCPatcher program and run it
2. Check all the boxes inside
3. Press the patch
4. Transfer the downloaded archive with a resource pack or texture to the resourcepacks folder

Starting with Minecraft version 1.6, packages that contain new elements for the game have been officially renamed resource packs. A resource pack can include not only an update to the look of the game, but also a lot of other content that changes the world of the game.

Launch Minecraft and in the main menu, click the “Settings...” button.
You will be taken to a submenu where you need to select “Resource Packs...”.
Press the button and the following window will open in front of you, on the left side of which the downloaded textures are displayed, and on the right side those installed in the game. In our case, no resource packs other than the standard ones are installed.
To add your own textures, click the “Open folder with resource packs” button at the bottom of the window. The resourcepacks folder will open in Explorer - all archives with resources are stored in it. If the folder does not open for some reason, you can open it manually. On operating systems it is located in the following places:
- Windows: %AppData%\.minecraft\resourcepacks
- Linux: ~/.minecraft/resourcepacks
- Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/resourcepacks
Have you opened it? Now you need to copy the downloaded package into it and return to the previous launcher window. Remember that it is not necessary to unpack the archive.
As you can see, the archive with textures copied to the folder was successfully recognized. Now hover your mouse over it and you will see how the picture turns into an arrow.
Click this arrow and they will be installed in Minecraft.

Similarly, you can remove resource packs from Minecraft. You need to select the installed package in the window above and click on the arrow that appears. After this, the archive will move to the left side of the window. To completely remove textures from them, all you have to do is delete them from the resourcepacks folder.
A lot of time has passed since the first version of the guide was written, during which both new versions of the game and new versions of MCPatcher have been released. The old instructions no longer worked, so the instructions have been updated in accordance with:
- Minecraft 1.5
- MCPatcher 3.0.2 (download: (downloads: 21394)) - suitable for 1.5 and all earlier versions.
- Computer on which the tests were carried out: Win XP
Standard (simple) texture installation
Important: this method only works when installing 16x16 resolution textures!
And also for HD textures for Minecraft version 1.5 and higher - starting from this version, the game began to support HD textures without additional manipulations.
Minecraft has a built-in function for installing textures, very simple and convenient, with only one limitation - the resolution of textures can be set strictly to 16x16; with textures 32x32 and higher there will be problems (the most common is that water blocks are not displayed).
Instructions:
1. Download the 16x16 resolution textures you need. The format of the downloaded file must be .ZIP
2. Copy the downloaded file to the “texturepacks” folder, which is located in the game folder. If you don't know where it is located, the easiest way to open it is as follows:
a) Start -> Run
b) Copy there: %appdata%\.minecraft\texturepacks\
c) And click “OK” - the “texturepacks” folder will open
3. After the zip file with textures is placed in the folder, launch the game and click on the “Textures” button (“Texture Packs” in the English version).
4. A list of textures will open, in which you need to select the one you need and click “Done”. If you have “pure” Minecraft, and you copied only some textures there, then you will see two textures: “Default” - standard textures, and those that were copied.
5. Click done - the textures will be installed.
6. To return the default textures, you also need to go to “Textures” and select the default textures “Default” there.
Installing HD textures using MCPatcher
If, when installing textures, you encountered incomprehensible “jambs” - for example, water blocks disappeared, strange blocks appeared in the ground (for example, burning cobblestones) - this is a consequence of the fact that you tried to install HD textures in a standard way, which in this case does not work.
For Minecraft versions 1.4 and earlier, to install textures with a resolution of 32x32 and higher, you need to use MCPatcher!
However, many players find it more convenient to install textures the old fashioned way using MCPatcher, even on version 1.7 and higher.
Download latest version 4.3.1: (downloads: 1921)
Instructions:
1. Download the necessary textures (the resolution of the downloaded file must be .ZIP)
2. Download MCPatcher
3. Run mcpatcher-3.0.2_01.exe and wait while it analyzes the game and game files.

Open the “AppData” directory on your computer. If you installed cheats on Minecraft, you have already worked with this directory. In the case of textures, the procedure is completely identical - you need to open the directory and copy the necessary files into it.
Method two
The first method allows you to add textures with a resolution of up to 32x pixels. If you downloaded a pack with a higher resolution, use the following method:
Further actions completely repeat the first method. Open the "Roaming" directory, go to the ".minecraft" folder and find the "resourcepacks" directory. Copy the files from the previously downloaded archive here.
Launch Minecraft and go to the settings menu. Expand the “Resource Packs” section, highlight the required pack and click on the arrow to make it active.
You only need to patch the game once; In the future, you will simply need to add new packages to the “resourcepacks” folder.
