Wireless headphones similar to earpods. Audio and video

If you are not ready to spend more than two hundred dollars on Apple AirPods - and this is exactly what these headphones are sold for in the CIS countries - but you are fascinated by the form factor of wireless earbuds, you can find an alternative.

After the announcement of Apple AirPods in September 2016, many users had a question: will they work with non-Apple devices? After all, they are equipped with a proprietary W1 chip. It turned out that AirPods are compatible with any source that can stream music via Bluetooth. But when using non-Apple technology, their functionality will be poorer. Apple commented on this situation as follows: “AirPods work with any third-party audio source via Bluetooth, but their magic is lost.”

AirPods are far from the first wireless headphones that are separated from each other. However, it was this product that became the cornerstone for the industry. After their announcement, rare experiments in the production of “fully wireless” in-ear headphones became a trend.

Until recently, such an idea seemed like a gamble. That is why many wireless headphones that are on the market today and are perceived as an alternative to AirPods are the brainchild of small startups that raised funds to start production on Kickstarter, Indiegogo and other crowdfunding platforms. As a result, their quality can vary greatly depending on the batch, and if you read a positive or negative review a certain model, it is not a fact that everything said or written will be relevant for the copy from the next batch.

Be that as it may, the last year was marked by the release of several notable models of wireless headphones that have much in common with AirPods: separate capsules of headphones that are not connected by wires; using Bluetooth to communicate with a sound source and having a built-in battery for battery life, as well as a storage case with its own battery for on-the-go charging.

Like AirPods, such headphones are usually designed on the basis of a wired prototype (for AirPods this became the wired EarPods headset), while the cost wireless option many times higher.

Some of the models in the review provide the user with additional features, such as active noise cancellation, fitness monitoring, advanced touch control, water and dust protection, etc.

Note that the wireless models in the review are usually inferior in sound quality to their wired counterparts. But this does not detract from their main advantages: miniature size, complete absence of wires and, as a result, incredible wearing comfort.

Samsung Gear IconX

Small wireless fitness headphones from Korean manufacturer, which during sports allow you to combine listening to music with tracking important indicators of the body. Data from sensors built into the capsules is synchronized with Samsung’s proprietary S Health service. Gear IconX can be used as a monitor heart rate(the corresponding sensors are built into the headphones).

The model is equipped with a 4 GB drive and can be used as an MP3 player. Gear IconX is compatible with any smartphone running Android 4.4 and later. Official iOS support not announced, but on the w3bsit3-dns.com forum you can find workarounds for using headphones with iPhone and iPad. True, in this case the manufacturer is not responsible for the stability of their operation. In our online store you can choose an original Apple iPhone at an attractive price.

The headphones are supplied in a miniature complete case, which also serves as charging station"V field conditions" With it, both headphones can be charged from 0 to 100% twice. At the same time, the manufacturer claims the operating time of the Gear IconX as a fitness tracker and a separate MP3 player is 3 hours, and 1.5 hours in fitness tracker and Bluetooth headset mode. If the need arises, the headphone case can be used as a power bank and for charging a smartphone. If necessary, Gear IconX can be used one at a time while the second earbud is charging.

Especially for runners and cyclists, the ability to “mix” the audio content being listened to with ambient noise has been implemented. When used in this mode, you will not miss an approaching vehicle.

At the same time, the battery of the supplied case allows you to charge them 3 times. As a result, you can count on 12 hours of operation (from 0 to 100% the headphones charge in 1.5 hours).

The model boasts water resistance and three hours of operation on a single charge. At the same time, the built-in battery of the case can charge the headphones 2 times. Thus, the total operating time of the device on a single charge is 9 hours.

At the start of sales, the device could be purchased for 299 USD. However, later on the official website the price was reduced to 279 USD.

Onkyo W800BT

Labs Here One allows you to give back. Siri commands without having to take your iPhone out of your bag or pocket. According to the manufacturer, operating time on a single charge ranges from 2.5 to 3 hours in playback mode and up to 5 hours in suppression or external noise processing mode.

The model is protected from moisture and dust according to the IP67 standard and has an impressive warranty period of 3 years.

Like the other fitness headphones on this list, the Jabra Elite Sport comes with a heart rate monitor. At the same time, the fitness component is added without compromising the sound, so the model can be used as a headset and full-fledged music headphones.

For comfortable listening to tracks in a noisy environment, an active noise reduction system is implemented.

The operating time on one charge is 3 hours. It may seem small, but among its direct competitors, few models can last as long. In addition, battery life can be increased by using the included charging case.

Jabra Elite Sport strikes a good balance between sports functionality and sound quality. However, this affected the price.

Official Apple price EarPods are 2,490 rubles. The headphones are good, but they have their drawbacks: due to the glossy case, they constantly tend to fall out of the ears, and due to the thin wires without PVC content, they break down in the area of the plug and get tangled when carried. The advertised ergonomic shape, unfortunately, does not suit everyone, and as a result, for people with “incompatible” ears, the headphones do not sound at all.

It’s very difficult to buy a decent headset with iPhone support for 2,500 rubles, so we started from the amount of 3,000 rubles, which is quite budget-friendly by today’s standards. The main selection criteria were sound, the presence of a microphone and a control panel. With this in mind, we have selected five candidates for purchase.

»
A new product from the well-known Xiaomi, interesting primarily due to its hybrid design. Headphones use two types of emitters: dynamic and reinforcement. The former are responsible for low frequencies, the latter for mids and highs, which allows you to achieve the most complete sound picture.

The design of the “hybrids” is also in perfect order. Metal case, fabric-braided cable, remote control on the right earphone. The plug is straight, but miniature and with a shock-absorbing insert. The volume buttons, which also allow you to switch tracks, can be made to work using the CTIA-OMTP adapter (the adapter is cheap, you can buy it on AliExpress). Xiaomi Hybrid is available in two colors: based on Apple terminology, these are Space Gray and Gold.

Despite the nuances in the operation of the remote control, these headphones are one of the most interesting in the budget category. They sound good and are very pleased with the price, especially if you buy directly from China (about $20).

In 2016, the world-famous company Apple introduced its unique new product - AirPods. These wireless headphones are compatible with any branded device, and also reproduce sound from devices that support Bluetooth version 4.0 and higher.

Advantages of AirPods headphones are considered:

  • mobility,
  • compactness,
  • 5 hours of work without recharging,
  • easy control by tapping + voice commands,
  • the quality of the charging case itself,
  • quick connection of headphones to branded devices.

At the same time, users note and AirPods disadvantages:

  • the device works as required only with iOS 10 software,
  • The sound quality is not very good high cost devices (about 200 dollars),
  • voice control of playback is not very convenient in noisy conditions,
  • the fit in the ear is not secure enough,
  • no soundproofing.

Despite the popularity of AirPods, many buyers have decided to find an alternative to this advanced device for the reasons described above. Our material will help such buyers with their choice.

How to choose in-ear headphones (“plugs”)

  1. Since users looking for an alternative to AirPods are price-sensitive, it's important to understand what factors influence the cost of wireless headphones:
  • location and version of built-in Bluetooth modules;
  • battery capacity and charging features;
  • quality of additional device control sensors;
  • built-in memory;
  • the presence of codecs that improve sound quality (such as aptX);
  • quality of microphones;
  • soundproofing;
  • noise reduction;
  • brand;
  • materials.

Thus, the large price spread of models depends on the above variables. Choose headphones based on the conditions of use and those components that are really important to you.

  1. The location of the Bluetooth module in one “ear” (and its quality) in some models affects communication with the phone/other source. So, if the receiver is in the right earphone and the phone is in the left pocket, some devices have problems with the signal. If you need such headphones for home use, then they will do just fine; but they are unlikely to be suitable for driving on the street.
  2. Not all wireless AirPods alternatives are noise-cancelling, and not all are perfectly soundproof. By the way, owners of the original Apple model also point out these errors. Therefore, planning to use the device in public transport in order to isolate yourself from outside world, and at the same time, without disturbing anyone, make sure that the device will satisfy your needs.
  3. If long battery life is important to you, note that most wireless in-ear headphones of this type range from 3 to 5 hours. Absolute mobility has such disadvantages.
  4. The ease of fitting in the ears must be checked. Some models have a strict “fit” in one position. Some can be rotated inside the ear. Sometimes this affects the sound quality and always affects the overall wearing comfort.

Even before AirPods appeared on Kickstarter, there were several similar projects. Two small in-ear headphones, no wires and a separate case in the form charger. However, at least one of those projects literally sunk into oblivion, and all the public’s attention ended up being focused on Apple’s new product. The abolished mini-jack in the iPhone 7 was precisely what was supposed to push users to choose wireless headphones and headsets, so AirPods sold well, despite the price of $159. But personally, I immediately noticed two shortcomings for myself. Firstly, the sound quality - for my taste it was almost the same as the wired headphones that came with the iPhone. And secondly, the complete lack of sound insulation - noise from outside made it difficult to enjoy the music, and increasing the volume inevitably led to the fact that my music became audible to others. And if on the street it was still somehow possible to come to terms with this, then on the plane I regularly caught the embittered glances of my neighbors in the cabin.

In general, everything Apple competitors We were well prepared in this regard. At the IFA 2017 exhibition, four models of wireless in-ear headphones were presented, which will successfully replace the AirPod and will be interesting in their own right.

Sony continues to bring active noise cancellation technology to the masses, and its first in-ear wireless headphones also have built-in noise reduction. And I must admit, I always thought that such models did not need these bells and whistles: the dense silicone liner itself does a good job of isolating external noise. But the WF-1000X convincingly prove the opposite - with them you can feel complete silence even on a noisy street. You can not only listen to music without interference, but also use headphones as earplugs - for example, to sleep peacefully on a plane.

Each earphone has a 6mm dome-type driver. Volume reserve compared to expensive ones wired headphones small, but with noise cancellation working you will rarely have to raise the sound level above 60-70%. The headphones themselves last from 3 to 4 hours on a single charge (depending on the volume and conditions in which the noise reduction works), and the charging case will allow you to get another 10 hours of playback. It charges the headphones in about an hour, and it also has an NFC module for quick connection with a smartphone. In Europe, Sony WF-1000X will be sold at a price of 220 euros, but Russian prices will be announced in mid-September. However, I would not expect the headphones to cost less than 18 thousand rubles.

A more affordable alternative to the WF-1000X could be the JBL Free headphones, presented at IFA 2017 a day later. True, they do not have an active noise reduction system, but since the headphones are in-ear, external noise is cut off quite well. To my taste, JBL Free sounds even better than Sony, not to mention Apple AirPods, but at the same time there is some lack of bass. However, for some genres of music this can only be a plus.

The design doesn't evoke any emotions - it's cute, practical, but overall nothing special. AirPods look more laconic, while Sony WF-1000X looks more technologically advanced. The sound is reproduced by dynamic drivers with a diameter of 5.8 mm, and Bluetooth 4.2 is used for connection. The headphones themselves last 4 hours on a single charge, but this unsightly case that comes with the kit gives them another 24 hours of use, although the battery capacity is rather modest - 1500 mAh.

The headphones themselves in the case charge in about an hour, and the case can be charged from the mains or from a computer via USB. JBL Free has already begun to be sold in the USA for $149, in the EU they are asking for the same amount in euros, but in Russia this new product will appear this fall, a little later. The price in rubles has not yet been announced.

The title of the most expensive wireless headphones at IFA 2017 rightfully goes to the B&O Play E8. They sell for 300 euros, exactly double more expensive than Apple AirPods. They do not have a noise reduction system, protection from dust and moisture, and no other additional functions, but they have exactly two advantages: sound and workmanship.

In terms of sound quality, the B&O Play E8 is my favorite. They manage to reproduce rock, pop, classics, and even extreme genres equally well. electronic music. I compared them with my wired AKG N40 and didn't notice much difference. But the quality external design What immediately catches your eye is that these wireless little ones are made of dark aluminum with small plastic inserts. And the charging case is trimmed with genuine leather. In general, expensive and rich in the very in the best sense this word.

Control is carried out by touching the external panel of the headphones. A single press starts/stops playback, double and triple presses switch tracks forward and backward, and so on. B&O Play E8 play music for about 3 hours, and the compact case allows you to charge them from zero to one hundred percent twice, that is, get total about 9 hours of work. Compared to the JBL Free, it’s somehow not impressive, but overall this is an acceptable indicator.

Samsung Gear IconX 2017

It should be noted that formally, with its last year's Gear IconX, Samsung was ahead of Apple. This year we are already dealing with the second generation of this model. But this is not just a wireless headset, but a full-fledged fitness tracker with all that it implies. The main difference from all other models is the availability own memory(4 GB), which allows you to listen to music without a smartphone in your pocket. This will be especially convenient while jogging or working out in the gym. True, the total number of songs that can be recorded should not exceed 1000, even if it all takes less than 4 GB. Without connection bluetooth headphones Play for about seven hours, with a connection - about four hours.

The second point is protection from dust and moisture. Samsung doesn't recommend taking a bath or swimming in a pool with the Gear IconX, but light rain and beads of sweat won't harm the headphones. Third, a built-in activity tracker - the headphones are quite capable of replacing a fitness bracelet. Playback control is the same as on the B&O Play E8 - a single touch starts playback or answers a call, a double touch turns on the next track, a triple touch on the previous one, and a long hold activates the voice menu.

The case that comes with it is just as clunky as the Sony's, only much more compact. Plus - it is more convenient to carry in your pocket. The downside is that it will only allow you to charge the headphones once. But charging is connected to the case itself via USB Type-C, which means you can use one cable for both your smartphone and headphones.

The second generation Samsung Gear IconX will cost $199 and will work with any smartphone running Android 4.4 KitKat or higher. For the built-in tracker to function correctly, you will need a proprietary application that works best on Samsung smartphones.

Instead of a conclusion

In general, fans of wireless headphones will definitely not be disappointed this year. Apple AirPods are inferior in sound quality to absolutely everyone, the same can be said about noise cancellation, control and everything else. The one thing where Apple still has no equal is design. Let appearance headphones are largely due to their functionality, but when it comes to the charging case, neither Samsung, nor Sony, nor even JBL have been able to create anything even close to as laconic and elegant. In addition, none of the presented models will allow you to work with multiple devices - a smartphone, tablet and laptop - as easily and naturally. But most importantly, now the Apple headset doesn't seem so expensive. JBL asks exactly the same for its new product, but devices from Sony, Samsung, and especially Bang and Olufsen are even more expensive.
