Text editor for iPhone. Review of text editors for iPad

There is a legend that once upon a time, when the world was not yet ruled by money, and people were ruled only by love and honor, Microsoft was a purely software company and released only software. One of its key partners in this direction was the Cupertino computer manufacturer - Apple. Apple company. Everyone was happy, and the world was close to comprehending the absolute truth and the state of the ideal. Years passed, and the Redmond electronics tycoon, due to his incredible commercialism, decided to “chop off” his piece in the “iron” direction. However, today it became clear that nothing worked out for him, because the giant’s management gave up their main trump card - Microsoft Office. Now the entire office suite is available on the iPad, and in this material we will look at a text editor.

It's done, office Microsoft package Office is now available on iPad. Apple tablet users have waited too long for it, they have listened to too much ridicule that they favorite device deprived of such an important modern business tool. Frankly speaking, I was never a fan of the idea that someday I might be able to use a piece of Microsoft’s creations on my iPad, because... and on my main work PC, all their “charms” are quite enough for me. Yes, I wasn’t expecting Microsoft Office for iPad, but why should I expect it when there is a wonderful, chic and excellent one? And I haven’t started listing my creations yet third party developers in this field! However, the fact is that Microsoft Office for iPad has appeared, so we simply have to look at it from all sides and draw conclusions about the advisability of its use. In this particular material we will look at the Word text editor.

1. Create a new document in Microsoft Word on iPad

Like Apple's proprietary text editor, which, by the way, is now available absolutely free for new devices, Microsoft Word offers many templates created professional designers companies. Their usefulness for some can be enormous, because they can save a huge amount of time, but I personally have never used anything like this - I always created a document with clean slate. However, in addition to blank document, there are the following: booklet, business letter, business newsletter, modern resume, family news, leaflet, invoice, personal letter, proposal, school newsletter, syllabus, tear-off leaflet, course work and a traditional resume. Half of the names are not familiar to me, although I am sure that I have come across many of them - perhaps the translation is incorrect, but oh well.

2. Editing a document in Microsoft Word on iPad. Home page

Editing documents in the Redmont text editor is divided into several functional tabs, similar to the desktop version of the program. The first is called “Home Page” and contains the following main functions: changing the font, its type and size, changing the text color and fill, changing the position of the text on the page, line spacing, creation of numbered and regular lists, left-right indentation, non-printing characters.

3. Editing a document in Microsoft Word on iPad. Insert

While working with certain objects in documents, new tabs and new functions in tabs can (and will) appear in the main menu.

7. Synchronization with clouds and file storage in Microsoft Word on iPad

In addition to his internal storage with files, the program only supports working with a proprietary cloud service from Microsoft called OneDrive. It's a pity that there are no others, it's a pity.

As you can see, the functional set is practically the same as that in the desktop version of the text Microsoft editor Word. By the standards of mobile systems, it is quite impressive, but not everyone needs it. Considering the fact that you can work with the same Pages for free, the cost of up to ten dollars per month (you can fully work with any application in the package only with a subscription to Office 365) of the office package from Microsoft is a little scary.

To summarize, we would like to note that Microsoft, in our opinion, released Office not for the iPad, but for its customers who may have an iPad.

As for the subject - that's it, see you again!

P.S. When registering a new Microsoft account, the user will be given a month of trial use of Office 365.

CoffeeScript At Once

Another application for web developers. For those for whom native Java Script is not suitable for some reason and uses CoffeeScript.

Advantages:

The iPad tablet, which appeared only in 2010, has long become an invariable attribute of journalists, students, writers and ordinary users whose activities are in one way or another connected with typing. Apple gadget Not only is it lighter and more compact than a laptop, it also boasts a ton of versatile editors. The best i-apps from App Store chose Vesti.Hitek.

iA Writer has an extremely simple and minimalistic interface. The program developers adhered to the concept of “text and nothing but text”, so no confusing tools, formatting and complex settings you won't find it in it. An interesting Focus mode highlights only the sentence that the user types into current moment, and darkens others, which allows you to concentrate on what is written and not be distracted.

One more useful feature programs - a number additional buttons above the keyboard, with which you can quickly jump to the previous or next word, put a period, comma, hyphen, colon or parentheses. In addition, iA Writer supports Markdown (simplified markup language) syntax. It can save documents to iCloud or Dropbox so that you can continue working on them from other devices. There is also a version of the editor for operating system OS X

Pages is the exact opposite of iA Writer. In terms of the set of functions, the iOS version is practically no different from the “desktop” version: in addition to text, here you can also work with graphics, build tables and charts. The program is perfect for people who, in addition to an iPad, also own a Mac. Given that Pages is developed by Apple itself and is therefore tightly integrated with iOS, documents between the web version in iCloud and the editor for Mac are synced almost instantly.

Since purchasing this Evernote programs last year it became even more convenient. For example, search by handwritten text and synchronization with notepads have appeared. Despite the lack of full character recognition and export, Penultimate is still the best program for creating quick sketches.

The best option for writers and bloggers who type long texts. The Arrange function allows you to quickly rearrange paragraphs by dragging blocks with your finger, and the Inspector will show interesting statistics such as the average number of characters per sentence or the most frequently used words. There are no tools for advanced formatting in Phraseology, but, like iA Writer, it supports Markdown markup and Focus mode, which allows you not to be distracted by irritants.

Quip, created by former Facebook CTO Bret Taylor, is not just word processor, but also a messenger that allows you to discuss and jointly edit what you have written. Thus, by chatting, several people can work on the same document in real time. Changes made by the authors are immediately displayed on the screen.

Editorial, like iA Writer, also has a number of additional keys above the keyboard, only here they are configured. For example, long pressing the button with square brackets you can "tie" quotes or braces. In addition to synchronizing with your Dropbox account and viewing what you have written in the built-in browser, Editorial allows you to edit scripts written in the Python programming language.

An excellent tool for programmers with syntax highlighting (HTML, C++, SQL, JavaScript, etc. - more than 80 languages in total), uploading files to Dropbox, as well as S(FTP) and WebDAV servers. The created web page can be immediately viewed through the built-in browser. Eat ample opportunities for editing plain text: auto-indents, Markdown, TextExpander support, auto-correction, word and character counter. The additional row of buttons in Textastic is implemented best of all: to print a character, you need to hold your finger on the button and then move it in the desired direction.

Probably 99% of all photographs are now taken using smartphones. There are thousands of digital photo processing apps on the App Store. How do they differ from each other and is it worth paying money to buy them? In this review we tried to collect best photo editors for iPhone. And during the testing process, they described their differences, advantages and unique functions. Here's the list...

ProCam 5

Quite old and popular apps for shooting and processing photos and videos. First of all, it is worth noting that the application has many functions for the shooting itself. In it you can change ISO, set shutter speed, white balance, frame format, etc. In the standard “Camera” application on iPhone, all these parameters are not subject to manual change. In addition to photos, you can shoot a series, video, or Time lapse in the application. After shooting, frames (including videos) can be processed with filters and other settings, such as brightness, contrast, blur and much more.

The application is successful. It will be especially useful for photographers who love shooting on iPhone.

Snapster

A few months ago, VKontakte presented its photo service, which looks a lot like Instagram. The whole point this application is that the feed shows photos of friends and groups from your VK account.

The Leningrad development team decided to add an image photo editor, which (according to them) is much better than Instagram. Georgy Lobushkin (Head of the press service of VKontakte) immediately after the release of the application demonstrated its capabilities using an example own photo Spasskaya Tower. After using the application, I was not dissatisfied. It's really convenient to scroll through friends' photos. separate service, in addition, there are sections with popular and recommended photos. The handler also left good impression. It has quite a few filters and other “tricks” to get good results.

VKontakte put a lot of effort into creating Snapster. In fact, it turned out to be a high-quality and convenient application.

Pixelmator

Probably the most famous of all photo editors for iPhone. Pixelmator is made in “Apple” style, and is very reminiscent of iPhoto, great app, which Apple stopped supporting with the release of iOS 8.

Pixelmator can not only process photos, but also make collages, turning into a mobile photoshop. From the presentation in the AppStore we see how you can easily create an excellent image, but for this you will need to find (draw) suitable pictures for their subsequent use. After editing a few photos I got a lot positive emotions. The interface is simple and convenient, and the functionality is impressive.

A thing worth the money.

Darkroom – Photo Editor

A simple application from Bergen Co. Has good filters and standard set photo editing. The disadvantages include the fact that you cannot take photographs in the application itself (a small thing, but unpleasant). This is a clean editor. But the advantages include the ability to create your own filters, save and share them. For this opportunity you will have to activate PRO mode - 149 rubles.

Great job with filters - that's what distinguishes this photo editor for iPhone.

Enlight

Huge number functions and extensive settings give complete freedom to the imagination. Each editing section has a hint on how to work with it. Therefore, there should be no difficulties with the application. In addition to filters and image correction, here you can add text, paint, make a collage, add a frame, etc.

Universal photo editor for iPhone.

PicsArt Photo Studio

PicsArt is social network for creative people. You can post not only photos, but also drawings, which distinguishes it from Instagram. An app from PicsArt, Inc. Registration is only required to post images to your profile. For simple filter application or image editing, you can do without it.

The application, in turn, is rich in correction tools. Also, in addition to the news feed, there is good selections and competitions. What stands out from the functionality is the possibility of manual focus, which is not available in standard application"Camera".

I recommend it to anyone who is interested in image processing. Post your work and admire other people's.

Rookie Cam

The application is famous primarily for showing the operation of the selected filter in real time. It's very convenient. The application, like any other photo editor for iPhone, has many correction tools. You can also shoot a collage on the go here. We choose one of the many types of frame placement, and then we just start shooting. The camera itself arranges the frames in the order in which they were taken, and we do not waste time inserting photos into the windows.

Rookie Cam has high functionality for creating collages.

PICSPLAY 2

The creators of Rookie Cam have made another application for photo correction. It includes many improvements and new photo editing tools have been added. But some turned out to be paid (for purchasing the PRO mode). Those who do not want to pay extra can use this photo editor for iPhone for free. But without pumping, a watermark is placed on each photo.

Good application for photo editing, even a bad shot can be turned into something interesting.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom

Every photographer knows this product from Adobe. It is mainly used for processing RAW photographs on a computer. Now this photo editor has appeared in mobile interface. Lightroom is aimed at professionals, and includes all the tools to get a good shot through processing.

The application can sync with your tablet or computer. Pictures from one device instantly appear on everyone. This is an essential item for professional photographers who like to travel light.

Adobe Photoshop Express

A similar application to Lightroom, but much easier to use. IN this photoshop There are filters, photo correction and cropping tools. But some filters only work if you have account in Adobe Creative Sync.

For those who want to receive good result But I don’t know much about photo terms, I advise you to install this photo editor for iPhone.

  • Well, for professionals - definitely Adobe Lightroom. This is really professional application to obtain the appropriate result. True, a subscription to the Adobe package will cost several hundred dollars.
  • The idea to write about several applications for writing large volumes of texts came to me after I realized that going to lectures with an iPad is much more convenient than with a pile of notebooks. Then I even conducted a small poll on Twitter on this topic. The majority of respondents were in favor of Pages, as I expected. I want to say right away that it is for this reason that this wonderful program from Apple will not be in this series of reviews.

I can’t say that I am a very exemplary student, so I never took more than three notebooks with me at a time. Entering the first year, I thoroughly prepared to receive higher education. The notebooks I bought four years ago served me faithfully until I bought an iPad. Now there is no need for paper and I decided to completely transfer all academic lecture material to electronic text format. I note that I still had one notebook with a pen in reserve, in case I had to record any graphs or images of refrigerators or engines. It is not possible to do this without a special stylus on an iPad.

I must say that mine curriculum itself is a little free, that’s why I chose such an unusual method of recording lectures. My classmates reacted differently to my approach to studying, but after a week of steadily recording texts on my iPad, no one paid attention to me the way they did in the first days. After another week, the teachers also stopped looking at me with wide eyes. And all because, lazily leaning on one hand, I managed to record the texts with one finger of the other hand faster than the rest of my classmates did with a pen in a notebook. And this is true. What can we say about when I, being extremely focused, typed texts faster than the teacher had time to repeat them. In addition to the main function of typing, the iPad has come to the rescue more than once when it was necessary to find this or that table on the Internet or show an example of a part or machine. Often the teachers did not have such information, so sometimes I acted as a kind of assistant. Some of the teachers even appreciated this “thing” and its practical usefulness. As one of the teachers said, “it would be very useful if all cadets had “this.”

As I attend classes, I varying degrees I used each of these applications, some more, some less. Convenience and the already created attachment to some of them affected. However, I will try to convey to you as accurately as possible all the facts about each of these applications, telling you about all the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

I would like to immediately note that I considered each application primarily from the point of view of usefulness to the student, as the main user of this device. This kind of application is not suitable for creating simple notes. There are more adapted applications for this. All the programs I describe in the following are perfect for anyone who takes notes on large texts on their tablet. This can range from large lecture materials to the creation of abstracts and other work with large and small texts.

I chose six apps to create this review series. These are iWriter, iA Writer, Omm Writer, Enso Writer, WriteRoom and Daedalus Touch. Each of these applications is unique in its own way. Each one is valuable to me not only as an icon in electronic device, but also as a product of the activities of talented developers, each of whom invested not only their mind and abilities, but also their soul into the creation of their application. Such thoughts came to me as I used almost each of these applications.

Even before the time came to start writing reviews, I could not distribute the order of publication of reviews between applications, taking turns giving leadership to one or another program, changing their location. Therefore, I decided not to bother and, having previously arranged them in a folder called Writers by color from lighter to darker, I distributed the applications in the list for review in the same way.

I want to start with iWriter. In addition to the fact that the icon for this application turned out to be the lightest, another factor influencing its placement in the queue was the authorship Russian developers.

The app is as simple as it should be. While using iWriter, I did not find a single icon or menu item that bothered me or was not needed at all. All interface elements are implemented very thoughtfully and occupy the place where they should be.

All your documents will be located within walking distance. All you need to see them is to touch the very first icon. As you use the application, folders with content stored in them will accumulate here. text documents. Creating a folder, just like creating a separate document, does not require any special skills from you. To create a document, you just need to touch the button with the plus sign. If you need to create a folder to combine several documents, then first tap “Edit” and after that create a folder using the “New Folder” button. I expressed myself a little incorrectly a little higher when describing the process of creating a folder. There is one feature here that will not allow you to move documents already created outside of folders to any folders. This option is not provided by default. This is a minus. Because when, during the second lesson on the same subject, I launched iWriter for the second time to record a lecture in it, I realized that I needed to combine the document I had already created earlier and this document into a folder. It turned out to be not so simple. I had to create new folder and there is already a separate document in it, into which I had to copy the contents of the document created in the last lecture. Simply put, you cannot move documents between folders.

Each application of this nature must provide native support for multiple fonts. iWriter was no exception to the rule and successfully demonstrated the ability to work with five different fonts This, if you'll notice, is the second of five application control icons. In addition to choosing fonts, it provides the ability to adjust the font size. The implementation is similar to that in iBooks. There is also a button for automatically setting the font size. To be honest, I didn’t quite understand how this automation works, but leaving the switch in the “On” position meant working with the maximum text size. Feel the difference between text size at maximum and minimum values.

Among other things, the program is equipped with a night mode and allows you to work with text in low light or in the absence of light at all.

Another problem I encountered as I used iWriter was the inability to capture document and folder names longer than 25 characters. That is, if the item is called “Machines for road repair and construction,” I had to call the folder MRiSD and nothing else. Since this was the fourth year and many new subjects appeared in the program, the names of which were not possible to remember the first time, reducing them in folders with text material was simply unacceptable. If I had continued to use the program, I would never have been able to remember the names of the subjects, much less the names of the teachers. The same goes for the name individual documents. In this case, there was a way out, but it looked somewhat imperfect. I named the documents according to the order of lectures, that is, “Lecture 4”, “Lecture 5”, in order to at least somehow separate them in a folder with the name of the subject, and wrote the topic and title of the lecture directly in the document itself. In any case, such a limitation of capabilities cannot be attributed to the advantages of the program.

As for the possibilities of distributing the text you created, everything here is also at the level the required minimum. The fourth and final menu icon prompts you to send a text open document by mail or simply copy it to the clipboard without having to go through the trouble of selecting the text and copying it. The other one, in my opinion, is the most important part The functionality of the program, which, by the way, will be equipped with almost all applications from this series, is the ability to link to Dropbox. By giving the app your Dropbox account login credentials, you allow it to upload all the documents you create to the cloud and, if your computer and all your portable devices are also tied to Dropbox, you provide yourself with access to documents from anywhere in the world. A great solution if you need to work on the computer on the texts you have created, study them and, possibly, edit them without the need to transfer them to the computer. All documents will already be located in the corresponding folder in Dropbox.

When creating the application, the developers did not rely on simplifying the organization of documents in folders, but primarily on working with text. I must say that iWriter has no equal here. And here's why:

This symbol menu makes working with text much easier. The application noticeably speeds up typing speed by placing basic punctuation marks on an additional line. As you know standard keyboard requires the user to switch to a keyboard with symbols to represent periods, commas, quotation marks, and other, even less commonly used, symbols. But if we talk about simple dialing text, what might you need besides a period, a comma, an apostrophe, a colon, quotation marks and parentheses? These are the main punctuation marks most often used in Russian and English languages. On both sides additional line Navigation buttons are located with symbols. With their help, you can quickly move between characters and words, without using standard methods offered by iOS. I note that different situations provide for the use various methods navigation between words and letters within words. In some places, the usual finger selection will be more convenient; in others, it will be easier to touch the screen two or three times, thereby switching to the required word or symbol. In addition, the program provides a slightly different navigation between words and symbols - well known to everyone iOS users swipe. I must say that this method is not as convenient as a simple touch the desired button. To move the cursor one character you just need to swipe your finger in the desired direction. To move the cursor to next word, swipe in the same way, but with two fingers the right side and the cursor will move.

I can’t help but mention the ability of the application to work in full screen mode. You can activate the mode by touching the icon on the right top corner. After that, everyone will disappear from the screen extra elements and even the iOS menu bar and you will be left alone with the text. In addition, the program works equally well in both landscape and portrait mode, providing the same full access to each of the menu buttons. I note that in portrait mode the area noticeably increases visible text, which is a big advantage when working with text and navigating through it.

You may have noticed that the program provides some statistics about each of the documents. The numbers are located at the top of the screen and indicate the total number of words in the document and the estimated time to read the document. For the sake of the experiment, I timed it and every time, no matter what document I read, my results were noticeably inferior to those indicated in the program. I read a text of 300 words in 1 minute 25 seconds, but the program indicated the time was 1:02. Moreover, such results were indicated both for English text, and text in Russian. I don’t know how the calculation was done, but I don’t think it could have any serious impact on the app’s rating.
