Analysis of search results. Checking positions

Dear friends, today I decided to put together all the programs and services for checking site positions. It took me 5 days to systematize the material and write this post.

From time to time people write to me asking questions about how to track positions for promoted search queries and what monitoring tool I use. In order not to answer every time and just give a link to my blog, I decided to make today’s selection. Laziness is the engine of progress 😉!

There are two large groups tools for monitoring positions - programs and services. There are also scripts and applications for Android and iOS. And there are also English-language instruments. I'll tell you about them too.

Programs for checking site positions

This is one of the few SEO programs that works on both Windows, MacOS and Linux. Here is a screenshot of one of the Rank Tracker reports:

Please note that in addition to the basic cost, you must pay extra annually for program updates. On the other hand, this guarantees that the software will not be abandoned by the developers and will continue to develop and improve.

https://www.whitespark.ca/local-rank-tracker - this service offers interesting graphs with the dynamics of positions, and also allows you to track positions by city:

you pick up keywords to the posts, do it internal linking, even buy links on exchanges, but the traffic on your blog does not increase? Write a lot of articles, but still don’t get more readers? You’re already thinking whether all this is in vain: so much time and work has been invested, but the return is scanty. These are exactly the thoughts that came to me before. This a grave mistake This is admitted, oddly enough, not only by beginners, but also by bloggers with 2-3 years of experience.

This problem is common not only to bloggers, but to all people. Remember yourself or your loved one who decided to go to the gym. We go regularly for the first month, then we start skipping, finding a good reason - then we give up completely. The same thing with running, fitness and diets. Sound familiar?

So what is the mistake of most of us and ordinary life and in blogging? We do not track the results of our work! It sounds like an unimportant fact, but this is precisely what prevents us from achieving major goals (pump up muscles, lose weight, get a blog with good traffic).

A beginner-amateur, pumping all the muscles in a row, doesn’t really pump anything. Likewise, a blogger who randomly buys links is left without readers. A professional athlete performs exercises on certain muscles, he knows exactly what he is pumping right now, in next couple He doesn’t use them for days, lets them rest and grow, and then checks the result. Same with the blog:

  1. We measured the initial data;
  2. We worked on the article (increased relevance, made internal linking, bought links);
  3. Noticed changes in the position of the request.

Those who regularly monitor your site’s position in search engines may not read, you are doing everything right. I'm sure you have good attendance good level. All the rest - read carefully.

How to find out your site's position in search engines

I remove positions in Yandex and Google. Other search engines bring less than 1% of traffic, so I don’t consider them. For this I use the service line.pr-cy.ru. I have used others, but this one wins in terms of price/quality ratio.

Look at the possibilities:

  • Daily reading of positions by keywords;
  • Total change of all requests;
  • Comparison with competitors;
  • Automatic import of keywords and metrics;
  • Minimum price and bonus.

Monitoring changes to all site positions

When adding keywords, we set the goal for what position it is applying for: top 3, top 5.

Here the ups and downs for the entire project are summed up during the day.

It is convenient to monitor the overall picture of the site. If you see a big drop, run and look at the webmaster.

The statistics show all the site positions for queries.

Let's start from the left:

  1. The keyword we are tracking is;
  2. Position in Yandex;
  3. Position in Google;
  4. Page URL (detected automatically, if you don’t trust it you can enter it manually);
  5. Impressions;
  6. The goal we set earlier.

This is what the graph of changes in the position of an individual request looks like (click on the keyword to go):

As you can see, Yandex has greatly lowered the site page in the search results. We know when the drawdown occurred and on what page - now we just need to figure out what influenced this change.

Comparison with competitors

What I also really liked was the ability to monitor competitors. It works for all your queries and it looks like this:

I won’t tell you how to find competitors, this is the topic of a separate article, but I’m sure you’re interested in seeing how your site looks compared to your competitors.

Total site changes:

The number of competitors is limited to 5, but this also provides enormous opportunities!

Automatic import and selection of keywords

I manually migrated the requests I'm tracking from another service. But there is good news- for those whose site has already collected good statistics(Metrica, Analytics, LiveInternet) you can import everything automatically!

There are plans to transfer keywords from metrics, because there are phrases there that I don’t even know about, but which give good traffic.

Price - from 0.025 kopecks per check

That's right, there is no typo in the title! The price is only 2.5 kopecks for checking 1 request in 1 search engine. No competitor offers a cheaper service.

To show how profitable it is, I have attached my financial statistics.

For checking 158 queries (79 keywords in 2 systems) I pay less than 4 rubles a day! Where else have you seen so much necessary information about your website for that kind of money?

Bonuses

As promised, 2 bonuses.

  1. Remove 100 positions for the first time - free of charge (receive);
  2. Pay for the service using XML limits. Suitable for those who have large sites registered with Webmaster and have XML limits assigned to them.

The time when it was enough to simply write a lot of articles has passed. There are more and more blogs, competition is growing, and to take a place in the top you need to actively work on your project on all fronts. Track positions and improve your website comprehensively, and the result will not be long in coming.

Manual check

But first, enable incognito mode in your browser (since search engines personalize results based on your search history, location, and other factors):

  • in Firefox: Menu - Tools - Get Started private browsing(or just the combination Ctrl+Shift+P);
  • V Google Chrome: Menu - New window in incognito mode (Ctrl+Shift+N);
  • in Opera: Menu - Create private window(Ctrl+Shift+N).

Let's repeat!

This method is the least accurate and should only be used if the results of the work are double-checked automated methods determining site positions or for quick analysis 3–5 search queries.

Professionals never use this method as the main one.

To check in Yandex

In Yandex, to check the ranking (that is, the distribution of pages by position in the search engine), open the Yandex search engine in a new window, enter the key and click the search button.

If an online site is promoted in a certain region (and you are geographically in a different region), also do not forget to set it in Yandex (button Settings - Change city).

To check on Google

At Google, the procedure itself is similar. But note that it can track location and change search results even when browsing through incognito mode.

You can see it at the bottom of the page Google search, as in the screenshot below. To exclude this factor, click on the inscription “Take into account my location” - the function will turn off.

Then press Ctrl+F5 to clear the cache and refresh the page, and get reliable results.

To manually determine a position in Google US

Sign in Opera browser and turn on VPN.

This way you can achieve the most reliable results.

Paid online services

If you need to track the result by a large number keys (from 15 and above), manual check ranking starts to take too much time and is not accurate.
This will come in handy paid online services. Some of them can only check positions, while others have advanced functionality for comprehensive audit and promotion.

Free online services from Yandex and Google

Yandex and Google themselves have simple services with basic capabilities - these are Webmaster tools. They are completely free, which is a plus, but not 100% accurate, which is a minus.

The data may be “pulled up” there with a delay, so the dynamics of changes will not be entirely reliable. But you can see the overall picture, so for your resource this is quite decent option. But for specialists with a lot of projects, it’s better to pay attention to any of the services above.

After the publication of this article, we received an official comment from representatives of Yandex.

Mikhail Slivinsky Head of Webmaster Services at Yandex

Let me explain and clarify about Yandex.Webmaster:

  1. IN " latest requests" - a list of recent queries with clicks/impressions/ctr, but without daily dynamics
  2. In the “query history” there is dynamics and 3000 popular queries, and by groups
  3. “The data may be “pulled up” there with a delay, so the dynamics of changes will not be entirely reliable.” - this is an incorrect conclusion. Data from search logs, i.e. this is exactly how users saw the site. Positions are often fractional precisely because even within one day, users from the same region could see the site in different positions. Indeed, collecting data takes time, so there is a delay of several days. But this does not make the data unreliable, of course. And we are working to reduce this time.

Now let's take a closer look at each of the Webmasters.

Tracking positions in Yandex Webmaster

It is primarily intended for collecting semantic core, but can also be used as ranking checks.

Positions are collected in Yandex and Google. Keys can be added manually (Menu Table Operations - Add) or copied from other program tabs.

To configure regionality, use the buttons in the status bar (at the bottom of the window). To start collecting, select Yandex or Google in the menu Relevant Pages, positions and analysis.

In addition to KeyCollector, you can use:

Desktop programs are relevant if you are missing regular services listed above. However, they require more high level knowledge.

English-language online and desktop services for monitoring positions

Among the free English-language programs, Rankware is considered worthwhile:

  • Windows and Macintosh OS supported;
  • allows you to track site positions without restrictions on the number of requests;
  • works for free for one verified web resource;
  • has the ability to expand functionality by purchasing a paid license;

This is what the interface looks like latest version programs:

Mobile applications for iOS and Android for monitoring positions

If you are working from a smartphone or tablet, convenient option will be using Android or iOS apps. There are paid and free applications, but the former, naturally, are more numerous, and their functionality is more extensive and convenient.

Application examples:

SEO Watcher (on Android), which is even free basic version allows you to analyze the site’s position in Google and Yandex for 5 search queries.

SEO Serp Mojo (on Android) makes it possible to check an unlimited number of URLs, keywords, see the ranking history for all tracked keywords, works with Google and even Bing with Yahoo, which are not particularly relevant in the CIS market.

SEO Tool is the “Apple” brother of the applications above. He works with two of the most major search engines with us, plus with Mail and a couple of other less popular systems.

The capabilities of the applications are almost the same - they all work on the same principle. To check, you need to select the number of search queries, keywords, the required search engine and the URL of your site.

Of all the apps in Apple Store And Play Market it’s better to choose those that are in the TOP - this guarantees correct operation and installation safety. To search for English-language programs, use the words “rank tracker” or “ranking tracker”.
