Tariffs for communications in roaming significantly exceed the usual costs for calls and mobile Internet, it can be inconvenient to monitor traffic and limit yourself. I want to easily update my Facebook feed, respond in instant messengers, upload photos to Instagram, respond to letters and SMS. SIM cards purchased in the destination country are not always suitable for this: it takes time to purchase and activate the card, and calls to Russia are still expensive. The Village talks about SIM cards and tariffs that are beneficial to travelers.

"Dreamsim"

The Dreamsim SIM card is valid in 197 countries. It is not tied to one operator and connects to the local network, while the number always remains the same. Tariffing by minutes and by megabytes: for example, in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, 1 megabyte will cost 1 euro cent (70 kopecks), 1 gigabyte - 10.24 euros (730 rubles), a minute of call to Russia - 25–30 euro cents ( 17–21 rubles). Tariffs in all countries can be found on the company's website.

You can order a SIM card there, delivery will cost 10 euros (710 rubles). It will be delivered to Moscow within 24 hours (pickup is also available here), to St. Petersburg - in two or three days, in other cities you will have to wait for a registered letter delivered by Russian Post.

Initially, Dreamsim has a zero balance; you can top it up from the mobile application, which also helps you keep track of your expenses. Dreamsim has a referral program: if a new subscriber registers using the user’s link and tops up the account with 10 euros (710 rubles), both will receive 5 euros. There is no subscription fee, but if you do not use the card for 365 days, 5 euro cents (3.5 rubles) will be charged monthly for the subsequent reservation of the number.

I found the “Dreamsim” card on a traveler’s blog, the conditions suited me. I didn’t consider other options. I've been using the SIM card for a month, during which time I've been to two countries - Estonia and Cyprus. About 4 euros left the account: in Estonia I called and used the Internet, in Cyprus I only made calls. The SIM card is convenient because it does not need to be switched from country to country. It is possible to receive bonus points into your account.

I saw positive reviews about Dreamsim several times on my friend’s travel blog and decided to try it too. We were impressed by the fast delivery and the nice interface of the application. On my first trip to the UK, there were some communication problems, but everything was resolved quite quickly using the technical support chat directly in the application. In terms of money - no more than 10 euros for two weeks of vacation. This is only the Internet (social networks, maps, Google search), somehow it didn’t come to SMS and calls.

GlobalSim

This SIM card is produced by the Estonian operator TOP Connect. It operates in more than 200 countries (in most of them, incoming calls will be free). Calls to Russian mobile numbers from most European countries cost 29 cents per minute, other calls - 29 cents, mobile Internet - 25 cents per megabyte. There are preferential packages for Internet and calls to Russia: for example, for 19 dollars (1,096 rubles) per month you can get 1 gigabyte of traffic. All tariff options can be found on the SIM card website. The balance is replenished from your personal account. It is better to choose packages in advance to avoid confusion.

The cost of a card with a balance of 10 dollars (577 rubles) on the account starts from 750 rubles; the card can be ordered in the online store. For a beautiful room they offer to pay extra from 300 to 1,500 rubles. GlobalSim does not have a subscription fee. The card does not expire if you make at least one call every two years. There is a 24-hour Russian-language support service, but only three minutes will be free; subsequent minutes will be charged as a call to an Estonian mobile number. Among the shortcomings: some users complain about poor connection quality.

This is the most profitable option for Europe. Especially if you often cross borders within the EU. I use GlobalSim for the Internet, calls now, in my opinion, are not needed by anyone. There is also a service that the operator does not advertise: you pay $10 once a year and get a tariff of 1 cent per megabyte throughout the European Union. Considering that you don’t need to buy a new SIM card every time and connect Internet packages for an unnecessary number of gigabytes and minutes, it turns out to be very profitable. For example, with Spanish operators, 1 gigabyte costs 7–10 euros (500–700 rubles), and the operator will definitely impose additional services. Everything is clear here. You cannot go into minus, the balance is replenished from the card on the website. And using referral links you can get the SIM card itself almost free of charge.

Mikhail Shashin

traveler

When I was traveling to Spain, I needed an operator that would be beneficial specifically for this country. Of the SIM cards that can be bought in Russia, the leaders for me were two - Orange and GlobalSim. I chose the latter because of their cheap calls to Russian landlines and mobile numbers and a relatively inexpensive internet package (1 gigabyte for $20). In two weeks, I spend about $10 (577 rubles) on calls and 20 dollars (1,153 rubles) on the Internet, if I connect it.

Orange Mundo

Before the abolition of roaming in Europe, the Spanish operator Orange's travel plan was called Go Europe. In most countries, it has a single cost - 50 euro cents (36 rubles) per 100 megabytes. In Russia, they offer to buy a SIM card on various websites: it costs 745 rubles, and together with a balance of 10 euros (710 rubles) and a connected Internet package, the cost will increase to 2,160 rubles.

The SIM card is valid in 41 European countries (does not work in Switzerland, Monaco, northern Cyprus), most have a 4G connection. According to the promotion, which will end soon, an Internet package with traffic up to 2 gigabytes per month costs 7 euros (498 rubles), up to 4 gigabytes - 10 euros (710 rubles), up to 6 gigabytes - 15 euros (1,068 rubles). If the limit is exceeded, packages can be extended (sending a message with a request is also charged), they are also automatically renewed once a month, but you can switch to a tariff without a subscription fee. You can change tariffs free of charge only five times, each subsequent switch will cost 6 euros.

Incoming calls are free, but outgoing calls are only possible to European numbers. A message to a Russian number will cost 1.21 euros, or 86 rubles. For Spain the tariffs are different. To reuse a SIM card, you need to register on the operator’s website. If you do not top up your balance regularly, the card will be deactivated.

I bought a SIM card from the Spanish operator Orange on the Euroroaming website. There was a promotion “10 euros - 5 gigabytes”. Very comfortably. The card works in EU countries, but in Serbia and Croatia we were without the Internet. I didn’t use calls; in the end, 20 euros (1,424 rubles) was enough for two months.

Varvara Sergeeva

entrepreneur

I purchased this card a year ago before traveling to Spain. I bought it in St. Petersburg, from a travel company. I had a walking journey ahead of me in the north of the country, along the Camino de Santiago, from the south of France through the Pyrenees to the west of Spain. I deposited 100 euros (7,120 rubles) into my account back in Russia, this money was enough for almost a two-month trip, Internet and telephone calls within Spain, with about 10-15 euros (712-1,068 rubles) left. To communicate with Russia, I had another SIM card, so I used Orange only for communication within the European Union. It came with detailed instructions with tariffs in Russian.

Choosing a mobile operator for traveling to Europe is a responsible matter. The final cost of communication services, which accrues during the trip, can become a stumbling block for an inexperienced tourist. Before giving preference to one or another mobile network, it is worth comparing their price lists and deciding which services will really be needed during your trip. Some operators offer only the Internet, others calls and SMS at competitive prices, while others offer everything at once.

Classmates

When going on vacation abroad, people consider three options for SIM cards to keep in touch with family and friends. The first is a native SIM card, the second is purchased upon arrival at the destination (that is, local), the third is a tourist one, ordered in advance via the Internet. About the degree of convenience and the benefits of each option in detail below.

Should you give preference to your native mobile operators?

Using your native SIM card abroad is not profitable. The price of calls in Euroroaming can average 60 rubles per minute of conversation. Internet traffic and SMS messages are also golden. Operators Megafon, MTS and Beeline provide good quality of communication, but the costs for it in roaming are enormous.

Mobile operator Megafon, for example, offers subscribers Internet in Europe at a price of 600 rubles per day, and the cost of calls reaches 129 rubles per minute. There is, however, an opportunity to save on Euro roaming by connecting additional services, such as the “Whole World” service, but it has a daily subscription fee.

Another nuance that is not in favor of native mobile operators - in some foreign countries, charging is carried out with a delay of up to 30 days (Megafon also has this). This makes the tourist think seriously: there is no time to keep track of the number of minutes and megabytes spent on a trip, and go into a decent minus I don't feel like it when I return home. If a person prefers to use the services of his native mobile operator everywhere, he should be prepared to significantly lighten his wallet.

Is it worth buying local SIM cards in Europe?

Buying local SIM cards in European countries while traveling is an excellent option, but only if a person stays in one country for a long period of time or vacations there regularly. Communication in this case it will be much better quality, prices for the Internet and calls within the country will be lower, and problems with activating and installing certain options will disappear altogether.

There are also disadvantages to this option. For example, prices for calls home for owners of such SIM cards, unfortunately, will remain high, and the remaining balance may simply burn out if the card is inactive for a long time.

The best travel SIM cards for travel

Travel SIM cards are ideal for use abroad. They are provided by mobile operators in Europe. There are options both for lovers of high-quality Internet and for those who value only calls and SMS messages. In the range of tourist SIM cards Especially notable are: Orange, Dreamsim, GlobalSim, Vodafone, Goodline and Simtravel. They are more reliable than other options and provide all the most necessary services at better prices.

"Dreamsim"

This is a universal international SIM card for travel. It is suitable for those who like to travel around the world. DreamSim has many advantages over other Travel SIMs:

  • operates in 229 countries;
  • the number remains the same when moving to another country;
  • Internet and call prices are the same as those offered by local mobile operators;
  • calls to Russia at reasonable prices.

Included in the package of services includes a free application for replenishing your balance and controlling expenses. The subscriber pays only for what he actually used, so after the end of the trip there will be no extra megabytes of Internet traffic and units left.

The cost of 1 minute of conversation varies from 0.07 to 0.4 euros, and Internet traffic costs 0.01 euros per 1 megabyte. Also, subscribers do not pay for incoming calls.

Vodafone

For those tourists who prefer to communicate only via the Internet, the Internet Passport tariff plan from the Italian operator Vodafone is suitable. It provides the subscriber with a large amount of Internet traffic at an affordable price. Benefits of the tariff plan:

For those who want to use not only the Internet, but also calls and SMS messages when traveling abroad, the European operator Vodafone offers the Smart Passport tariff plan. It differs from the previous one in that it costs tourists only 3 euros per day. For this price, subscribers receive 200 megabytes of 3G or 4G quality Internet traffic, 60 minutes of calls and 60 SMS. Using this tariff plan to distribute the Internet over a Wi-Fi network is not recommended. By the way, Vodafone SIM cards are valid for 11 months after the last top-up and are valid not only in Europe, but also in the USA and Turkey.

Orange SIM card with Go Europe tariff plan

This is one of the most economical options for tourists, provided by the Spanish mobile operator Orange. Such a SIM card can be taken with them on a trip by those people who do not want to waste money. Funds are debited from the balance only for the actual use of the services provided. Advantages:

  • an Internet package costs 1 euro per hundred megabytes of traffic;
  • Go Europe tariff is active in 40 European countries;
  • incoming calls are always free;
  • outgoing calls cost 0.08 euros per minute.

In Spain, communication services for Orange SIM card users are even cheaper. This “candy” costs 40 euros, and upon purchase, 20 euros are credited to your balance. In order for the card to work continuously, it needs to be topped up once a year with 5 euros. You can order a card online.

GlobalSim

Another one of the most popular and profitable tourist SIM cards from the Estonian mobile operator Top Connect LLP. Currently, this operator has more than 5 million subscribers worldwide. This popularity is not without reason, all thanks to the following points:

You can buy a SIM card both in the CIS countries and via the Internet. The price for it will be 750 rubles. Top up balance possible through terminals, banks, the Internet, cash desks and other methods.

Goodline and Simtravel

Also great options for traveling around Europe. They are represented by the same Estonian provider as GlobalSim, just under different names. In this regard, the proposed communication services and tariffs are identical. There is no point in dwelling on a detailed description of these options; the only thing that needs to be noted is that for those tourists who prefer to communicate via the Internet, it is better to choose Orange or Vodafone operators.

Our publications about roaming in general and the roaming initiatives of Beeline and MegaFon-Moscow in particular caused many letters of reproach with accusations of bias. And even with accusations of some kind of financial interest and malicious disregard for the topic of tourist cards. We persuaded, let's look into it in detail.

The phenomenon of so-called “tourist” SIM cards is interesting in its own way. Many have heard “something, somewhere”, others are actively using it, others have heard about problems with communication, the inconvenience of typing crazy combinations of numbers every time they try to make a call, etc. A common opinion is that communication is “for three kopecks,” but at the same time it is unreliable, terribly inconvenient and generally not for a normal person. In fact, everything is not so, or rather, not quite so. Advertising for “three-kopeck” communications is just that – advertising, the price tags for communications are even multi-ruble. On the other hand, the difficulties and inconveniences are greatly exaggerated. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in the middle, and we will try to get to the bottom of it using the example of the Estonian exTellsim map.

A solution for the “smart-greedy”?

Mobile operators do not yet see travel SIM cards as a real competitor. In any case, they diligently assure journalists of this. “Tursimka is a niche offer, and we do not consider it as a threat to our business” (MTS), “The percentage of those using such cards is negligible compared to the total mass of subscribers traveling abroad” (Beeline). Indeed, compared to the total number of roamers, the number of travel SIM card users is small, but let’s not forget about the disparate income from a roamer and a local subscriber. Therefore, it is possible that in the near future, travel SIM cards will begin to influence the pricing policy of operators.

It is generally accepted that a conservative subscriber begins to think about changing an operator at approximately the level of a 25 percent difference in the cost of services from a competitor, which our cell phones successfully use when developing their marketing initiatives: most of the tempting offers are addressed to new subscribers and/or potential “defectors.” The price advantages of a tourist card are much higher than the “cherished” 25%, but serious people are scared off by the additional complications. It’s much easier to do nothing at all and continue to regularly pay your roaming bills. Especially if the employer pays the bills. The majority of us are such “lazy people”, so the threshold for switching to tourist SIM cards is much higher. It is even more difficult to consciously give up the main advantage of GSM - staying in touch with your number, but there is an acceptable solution here too.

How it works

The so-called “Tourist SIM card” is essentially a properly prepared SIM card from one of the European operators. Incoming calls in most European countries are free, outgoing calls to Russia and other countries are much cheaper thanks to the USSD-callback function. Those. After dialing a number in the usual international format, we have to wait a few seconds, after which the phone seems to receive a call from the called subscriber, answering which we begin to listen to long beeps and wait for the connection to be established. TELE2 SIM cards work in a similar way in roaming, but with this operator the number must be entered as part of the USSD command, i.e. Simply dialing a number from your address book will not work. In this sense, “communication” with a travel SIM card is incomparably more comfortable.

Using a travel SIM card to receive incoming calls “directly” while roaming is not the most convenient and humane solution in relation to other people. To do this, you will have to give out your Estonian mobile number to everyone interested and force them to pay 13-18 rubles per minute. per minute of call (MGTS rates). If you don’t want to pass on your expenses to others, you can redirect your mobile phone to a travel SIM card, but in most cases, the cost of a minute of an international call will “eat up” most of the savings. It’s better to rent a virtual number from exTellsim and set up call forwarding to it from your own mobile phone. In this case, incoming calls become paid: 10.5 rubles. + cost of forwarding from your mobile phone for each minute of conversation + 150 rub. for every two weeks of virtual number rental. But in the end, we get full virtual roaming of our own mobile number with an incoming minute price of about 16 rubles. in most European countries, which is significantly cheaper than even seasonal roaming offers from the Big Three operators.

You don’t have to pay extra money for the convenience of renting a virtual number for forwarding, but build your own chain. The simplest option is to buy the MegaFon-Moscow “Unified” tariff and use this SIM card as a transit number, in this case 10.5 rubles. turn into 7.5-7.0 and the fee of 150 rubles disappears. for renting a virtual number. True, it’s a little more complicated and you need a vacant telephone, but an old handset (or even more than one) is now lying around in almost every house. The bottom line is that we get almost full roaming with the price of an incoming minute of about 12 rubles and an outgoing minute of about 18 in most European countries. However, let's not forget that in a number of countries incoming calls to exTellsim are paid. For example, in Bulgaria, incoming calls will be charged at 6 rubles. in a minute. Unfortunately, SMS messages are not forwarded, but you can send free SMS to an Estonian travel sim card from the exTellsim website.

If you regularly travel to the same country, purchasing a SIM card from a local operator may be more profitable, but a travel SIM card is good for its versatility. There are also funny incidents: for example, a call from Estonia from an Estonian (!) travel card will cost 37.5 rubles per minute, incoming calls – 19 rubles per minute. Just the opposite example: a call from Australia to Bulgaria using a travel SIM card will cost 15 rubles. in a minute.

How much?

Let's compare prices. Advertising slogans such as “Roaming abroad is 10 times cheaper!” Let's leave it to the conscience of marketers: the figure is really almost unattainable even if we shift part of our costs for callers directly to the Estonian travel SIM card number. So we will compare what is comparable, i.e. an option that is as close as possible to full-fledged roaming of GSM operators. Prices are in rubles including VAT, offers are valid only for the summer period and for a limited number of countries. We look at the usual roaming rates on the operator’s websites. Billing is per minute.

MTS Beeline Megaphone exTellsim
Incoming call 55 28,5 29** ~7-16*** (0)
Call to Russia 55 28,5 69 ~18
Local call in the country 21 28,5 29 ~18
SMS message 11 11 15 12
GPRS traffic for 1 MB* 430 512 358 No

**Every second minute is free.
***An option with full forwarding of calls received on a Moscow mobile phone.

For comparison - the same sign, but without summer discounts/initiatives. Roaming rates are for European countries.

MTS Beeline Megaphone exTellsim
Incoming call 55 57 29 ~7-16** (0)
Call to Russia 55 57 69 ~18
Local call in the country 21 29 29 ~18
SMS message 11 15 15 12
GPRS traffic for 1 MB* 430 512 358 No

*For MTS and Beeline roamers, the session is rounded up to 50 KB, for MegaFon-Moscow roamers - up to 100 KB.
**An option with full forwarding of calls received to a Moscow mobile phone.

To be fair, we note that incoming calls to exTellsim are still free in many countries. So, if you forget about business contacts and business negotiations during your trip, then an IP telephony card in Moscow plus a travel SIM card while traveling is almost an ideal option in terms of convenience and cost savings. Another important point that we often forget: when traveling as two or three or in groups, you almost always have to call each other (to agree on a meeting time, if you got lost in the city, etc.). Here travel SIM cards have no competition, since only the caller pays for the call and the conversation in this case will actually be 10 times cheaper than between two Moscow SIM cards in roaming.

Other pros and cons

The numbers themselves can be as good as you like, but there are dozens of ways to ruin the most wonderful service. Sometimes two lines of small print in the notes are enough for this. Conversely, some benefits may not be noticed when viewing advertising superficially.

  • A passport is required for registration.
  • The lifespan of the SIM card is stated to be unlimited; there is no expiration date for the payment.
  • “Subscriber Directory” is in Russian, there is round-the-clock support, dialing seems to be good (less than a minute of waiting for an operator to respond after three attempts during the day).
  • Account replenishment - express payment cards ($20 and $100, activation via the SIM menu, works abroad), credit card on the website (via CyberPlat, pre-registration of the card is not required, minimum amount - 300 rubles, time of crediting of funds to the personal account – 1 day), Eleksnet terminals (no commission), cash to the courier.
  • Tariffication of calls in roaming - in real time.
  • GPRS roaming is not yet available. Accordingly, it will not be possible to send an MMS either. Although the company claims that they are working on this issue.
  • SMS for 12 rubles is not cheap; given their prices for voice communication, it is wiser to call.
  • With a zero balance, incoming calls are made in 45 countries (where incoming calls are free), the minimum amount on the account to make an outgoing call is the cost of one minute of conversation in the host country.
  • Requesting a balance through a short number works after two to three times; requests from the SIM menu and via a USSD command work without failure.
  • SIM cards have been reported to not work with some Samsung phone models.
  • The SIM card and insert indicate a separate phone number for receiving SMS messages, although voice calls and SMS safely arrive at the main number (recently updated).
  • SMS from the site when sent are translated into translit, 60 characters are given to advertising. Moreover, the good people from exTellsim put advertisements at the beginning of the message so that not a single character of valuable information is lost.
  • The company's internal rate is 30 rubles. per dollar, affects the purchase of express payment cards. Prices on the website are in rubles including VAT, balance information is in dollars.

Summary

This is definitely a useful and beneficial thing for traveling. Again, he lies to himself and doesn’t ask for porridge. Marketers got too excited about “85% more profitable,” but it will be possible to reduce roaming costs by three times. If you try, you can do more, but at the expense of quality, convenience and accessibility. Competing products are Goodline and SimTravel, prices are comparable. In any case, you should carefully study the tariffs, prices and conditions; there is a difference in prices, there may be validity periods (for example, 9 months), etc. The SIM card of the TELE2 operator is also of some interest, since in a number of European countries prices for outgoing calls may be a little lower. Although the lack of free incoming calls in the host country is too serious a disadvantage, and there is no need to talk about real competition between TELE2 and travel card operators.

Traditional tariffs of domestic cellular operators are characterized by rather expensive international roaming. When traveling abroad, subscribers are forced to use modifier options, which is also not always profitable. A tourist SIM card would be a reasonable alternative to this problem. Let's see what this SIM card is and what advantages it gives when traveling to foreign countries.

SIM cards for tourists and their features

Leaving Russia with an MTS, Beeline, MegaFon or Tele2 SIM card, we are forced to change tariff plans or use additional options. Otherwise, we will face rather high communication rates. But even additional options are unable to make communication more profitable. In this situation, a tourist SIM card from one of the well-known tour operators will save you.

A tourist SIM card is a SIM card with a special tariff that makes communication abroad more profitable. It independently registers in foreign cellular networks, providing subscribers with prices in accordance with the selected tariff plan. It makes no sense to go into technical details - everything is complicated, but it works, and it works quite harmoniously.

Advantages of tourist SIM cards:

  • Low prices for calls within the host country.
  • Low prices for calls to Russia.
  • Inexpensive package or megabyte Internet.
  • No subscription fee.
  • Free incoming calls to most destinations.

Agree, not a single operator can offer this, although the Big Four still have lucrative offers.

But tourist SIM cards have their drawbacks:

  • You will have to change the number or connect it to a tourist SIM card (the latter option leads to higher communication costs).
  • Floating prices due to exchange rates - they are presented in dollars or euros.
  • Tourist SIM cards have international numbers - dialing from Russia will be expensive (compensated by linking a Russian number).
  • A slightly different way of dialing numbers (USSD commands and the Callback callback system are often used).

In addition, there is information that communication with tourist SIM cards is frustrating due to frequent failures.
