One of the many properties and features of adjustment layers in Photoshop is that each of them is automatically created with its own layer mask, which we can use to control the areas of influence of the adjustment layer in the document. By default, the layer mask is filled with white, as we can see in its thumbnail, which means that the adjustment layer is currently affecting the entire image underneath it. That's why the whole image became light.
