How to create a comic from photographs. Create a Graphic Novel Style in Photoshop

Create an exciting comic from photos and filter effects. This guide will teach you how to turn regular photo highway into intense action.

The lesson is long, so you will need desire and patience.

Open a photo of the city like this. On the original highway in Australia.

Duplicate fo new layer, then rename this layer “original”. Using the Magic Wand tool, select the sky and press Ctrl + J to copy the selection to a new layer. Name this new layer “Sky”.

Now select the original layer and apply Filter-Imitation-Outlined Edges (Poster Edges). Apply the settings as you want.

Then select the Original layer and apply Filter - Simulate - Outlined Edges with settings 10-10-6

The “Sky” layer is above the Original layer, so the original layer has a filter effect.

I want to crash the highway, so I need rocky terrain with a large number large stones. I used a photo from the high mountains in Norway. I took half the photo and copied it to the other side like a mirror image.

I pasted it onto a new layer, distorted it Edit-Transform-Distort This is to correctly match the perspective of the photo.

Remove all unnecessary parts using the Eraser tool (E).

Select Filter-Artistic. I used these settings, but you can use your own.

I also slightly adjusted the Image-Correction-Color Balance Ctrl+B (Image-Adjustments-Color Balance).

Select the Original layer, then use the tool Feather Pen(P) to destroy some parts of the highway pavement. Right-click and select Create Selection.

Turn off the selection and paste it on its own layer. Next Edit-Transform-Perspective, Turn it on, scale it.. Then when you are satisfied Select the layer of this piece, hold Alt and press the up arrow. Do this ten times until you get it big piece broken asphalt. When satisfied, select all the asphalt layers and merge them together. See example:

Take the Brush Tool (B) and paint along the edges of the asphalt. Use Shift to make straight lines from point to point! Take a dark color, black or dark grey.

I repeated these steps several times, on large and small pieces. And this is the final result of the fault:

I cut out a car from another photo then pasted it into the project. Give the car the same Filter-Artistic-Poster Edges filter effect, then use Filter-Imitation-Appliqué to create a cartoonish look. Play with the settings to your liking. You can use other filters as well.

Select Edit-Transform-Distort then drive the car so that it fits on the highway with right point vision.

Don't forget to use the Warp tool (Edit-Transform-Warp) if necessary.

Add a text layer to your project and write something. Use Distort to distort the text to your liking. Go to Blending Options, select a gradient. (Right click on the layer, then select Blending Options).

You can also make a black shadow around it! Here's an example.

I also give the car a little more speed by drawing a line. Take the Brush Tool, color white, and draw a line or several. Go to the blending page and apply a black stroke, 2 or 3px depending on the scale of your project.

We take another car, cut it out and copy it.

Make sure you check the conversion box. Vehicle scale -100.

Then park the car next to a large road sign.Apply all the effects as on the previous car to create a cartoon look.

Take a photo of the fire, cut it out and copy it.

I cut out, then applied Filter-Imitation-Appliqué

Take this layer and place it above the road sign. Then use the Eraser Tool (E) to remove the excess. Use Shift in combination with the eraser to remove straight parts.

Click right click mouse in the path of the pen tool, then select “make selection”. Fill it with white using the Paint Bucket Tool (G).

Go to layer styles and apply a gradient overlay

Now we're going to create smoke. Create a new layer, then select the area around the exploding cars. Select Filter-Render-Clouds. Place this layer above all layers.

Apply the Applique Filter to this layer.

Carefully remove unnecessary parts of the smoke.

To create depth, erase all the smoke that is in front of the road sign.

Use the Finger tool to smudge the lines.

Now add some loud ones text effects sirens like we did before.

Create a new text layer. The word 'TETUU' or similar. (Layer>Rasterize>Type). Hold Alt and press left several times to create a 3D effect. Merge these layers. Also, treat this text with a layer gradient like we did before in Blending Options.

Then you can add some scream background. Use Pen tool(P) to create a path. Hold Shift to draw straight lines. Then make a selection from it and give it the gradient look we used before.

Now we're going to change the direction of travel. Select the original layer and remove the direction of motion from the sign. Then make your own text. I did this:

I also did this with a different directional sign. To give the broken road more meaning, I added a “Work in Progress” sign at the bottom of this project.

Take the Smudge Tool (R) and smudge the spot to create smoke.

The main advantages of such photo wallpapers:
- manufactured according to individual client sizes

- visualization of photo wallpaper in the client’s interior

Many of you will think that to get a similar result, it is enough to use one filter, for example, the Magic Pen Filter or the Halftone Pattern Filter. But I am sure that this will not be enough for a quality result.

In order to decorate the photo after processing, we will also use the Comic Font themed font, the texture of old paper and various brushes.
Before writing this lesson, I read other similar tutorials. You can also check out these.
This is what will happen as a result this lesson.

Open in a new file Photoshop image Schoolgirl.
Besides being a really high quality photograph, this image has all the elements of a comic book style: a cool character, movement and good balance between focus and background elements.
So take note, not all photos are suitable for this lesson, take time to look for interesting characters!

Duplicate the girl layer. Apply Brightness/Contrast correction to the duplicate. You will have to add this adjustment twice. The settings are shown below as an example.

Make a copy of the previous layer and desaturate it. To do this, go to Image – Correction – Discolor (Image – Adjustments – Desaturate). Name this layer "Black and White".

Make a duplicate of the decolorized layer. Set the default foreground and background colors (black and white). Go to Filter – Sketch – Mascara (Filter – Sketch – Stamp).

Translator's note: based on the screenshot, the author did not use the "Ink" filter, but the "Linocut" filter.
Set the settings shown in the figure. Then change the blending mode of this layer to Color Burn.

Duplicate the last layer. Go to Filter – Sketch – Halftone Pattern. The settings are shown below. The blending mode of this layer should also be Color Burn.

Duplicate the "Black and White" layer. Go to Filter – Sketch – Magic Pencil (Filter – Sketch – Graphic Pen).

Translator's note: in my version of the program, the filter that the author uses is called not “Magic Pencil”, but “Mascara”.

This Photoshop filter has three positions: Stroke Lenght, Tonal Balance (Light/Dark Balance) and Stroke Direction. In the image below you can see what values I applied for these parameters. Set the blending mode for the layer to Dark (Darken).

Now make a copy of the original layer with the girl. Go to the Graphic Pen filter and use specified settings. Set the blending mode to Dark (Darken).

After applying all these filters, our image should look like this:

Translator's note: layers with filters should be arranged in the order they were added (the layer with the last filter at the top of the layers palette).

Duplicate the original girl layer. Go to Filter - Sketch - Photocopy. Set the blending mode for this layer to Color Burn.

It may seem to you that there are too many filters, but each of them makes its own additions and adjustments, for example, the last filter showed the outline of a girl, which made the image even more like a drawing.
You can add or adjust the resulting outline on the “Photocopy” layer. To do this, activate the Brush tool, set the foreground color to black, brush type - hard round, brush size 5 px. Draw lines where you think necessary.

Approaching this step, we have already used a lot of filters from the Sketch palette. You may ask: which one will be next? And I will answer - Halftone Pattern, but it will serve a little differently than before.
So, create a new layer on top of all other layers and fill it with white. Go to Filter – Sketch – Halftone Pattern. Select Pattern Type: Circle. After applying the filter, set the blending mode for this layer to Color Burn.

Let's diversify our work by adding brushes. Download the brush set and install it. Then create a new layer (on top of the previous ones) and use the brush you like on it, the color of the rays is white. Apply the Halftone Pattern filter to the rays with old settings. Set the blending mode of the layer with rays to Linear Light, lower the opacity to 50%.

Add a Layer Mask to the rays layer by clicking on the "Add Layer Mask" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. Click on the layer mask thumbnail and paint the silhouette of a girl on it with a soft black brush.

Translator's note: you can use vector mask and for the layer with thin circles.

Let's add color.
Create a new layer on top of all previous ones. Name it "Color". Now activate the Brush tool. Decide in which areas of the picture you want to add color accents, this is individual and depends only on you. If you are using several colors, then you need to add each color to separate layer. For my multi-colored layers, I used the Multiply and Overlay blending modes. Also experiment with the opacity of these layers.

What's a comic without captions? In this step we will add text to our artwork using the Comic Book Font.
In my work, I wrote the word "Bang" and added the date to the bottom left of the image.
You can find others on the Internet similar fonts, or issue an inscription according to to your own taste. You can also use one of these thematic ones.

Translator's note: in order to add an inscription, create a new layer, activate the "Horizontal Text" tool and write the text of your callout.

Create a new layer. Activate the Paint Bucket Tool and fill the layer with white.
Go to the Layer Style options ( Layer Style). Set the fill parameter value for the layer to 0%.
Select Stroke from the menu; stroke position - inside; size - 10px. color - white.
Then go to the Inner Glow settings; blending mode - normal (100%); color - black; size - 15 pixels; range - 1%.

The final step remains. Open the image and add it to your work on a new page. Set the blending mode of the paper texture layer to Multiply and lower the opacity to 60%.
In order to get more interesting result, you can add more inscriptions or colors.
That's it, I hope you enjoyed doing this tutorial!

Want to add variety to your photo album? For example, you can quickly and easily create old comic book effect. In this tutorial we will show you how to do this using some filters.

Open the photo you want to edit in Photoshop. Let's add contrast to it: IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > LEVELS. For this photo were applied following parameters: 60 / 1.00 / 220. Select suitable for your image.

At this stage of processing we will add the effect of old paper, which is necessary to achieve desired result. Go to FILTERS > ARTISTIC > FILM GRAIN. For this example we use: GRAIN: 4, HIGHLIGHT AREA: 0, INTENSITY: 10.

Make a copy of this layer (let's call it Halftone).

We've already got a great comic book effect. But to make everything like in the comics, you still need to work. We will work with the HALFTONE layer: select WIDTH: 20px, POSITION: Inside and COLOR: #F5ECE1.

Create a new layer and draw a small rectangle on it in the top left corner of the image. Paint it over orange. A yellow-orange gradient will look even better. Draw another slightly larger rectangle in the lower right corner. Paint it white. You should get something like this:

Let's highlight the borders of the image. We apply a new one empty layer to the one in which we have 2 rectangles. In TOOLS PALETTE, select RECTANGLE SELECTION TOOL. And draw the borders of the image.

Go to EDIT > STROKE: WIDTH: 4px, COLOR: BLACK, LOCATION CENTER and click OK.

Go to FILTER > BLUR > BLUR MORE. Add a little distortion to FILTER > DISTORT > RIPPLE (Amount: 20%, Size: Medium) and sharpen the result FILTER > SHARPEN MORE. Now you have the pencil-drawn borders of the image.

In this tutorial we will turn a photo into a drawing with a comic book effect.

Final image

Create new document 800 x 1000 px, resolution 72 dpi, color white.
Then open the model image and transfer it to work. Select a tool QuickSelectionTool (W)(Quick Select) and highlight white background.

Translator's note: adjust the selection, in particular the sleeve, in Quick Mask mode.

Next, invert the selection by going to the menu Select > Inverse(Shift+Ctrl+I) (Selection - Inverse). Then go to menu Select >RefineEdge(Alt+Ctrl+R) (Selection - Refine Edge).

Tool Refine Radius Tool(Specify the edge) move along the contour of the hair. If necessary, go through the tool several times.

And here is the result.

Select the background layer and add a fill layer Gradient fill. To do this, go to the menu Layer > NewFillLayer > Gradient(Layers - New Layer - Fill - Gradient).

Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N). Using the Rays of Light Brushes, paint rays of red color.

Select all layers in the layers panel and merge into one (Ctrl+E).

Duplicate the resulting layer (Ctrl+J). Turn off the visibility of the duplicate by clicking on the eye and select the bottom layer.

Then go to menu Filter >FilterGallery >Artistic >PosterEdges(Filter - Filter Gallery - Simulate - Outlined Edges).

Double-click on the layer to open the Blending Options window. Add the following layer styles.

Create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N). Select a tool Brush Tool(B) (Brush) diameter 6 px color white and paint highlights on the eyes.

Add an adjustment layer Vibrance(Vibration).

Go to the duplicate layer and turn on visibility by clicking on the eye.

Then go to the menu Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone(Filter - Appearance - Colored Halftones).

Change the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light(Soft light).

Now we need to add a popup window for the dialog. To do this, select a tool Custom Shape Tool(U) ( Free figure) and draw a figure. Rotate the shape a little (Ctrl+T).

In this tutorial we will turn a photo into a comic book in Adobe Photoshop. We will have to work with a variety of filters, use adjustment layers and layer styles. We will also need layer masks and working in them. You will learn several interesting techniques, which you can then use separately from each other.
