  • The beam is cut into three sections 33 cm long. Three lines are drawn on one beam: a central one and two transverse ones (the distance between them should be 30 cm). Using a pattern, draw a smooth curve. A cut is made along the line with a hacksaw, and the edge is cleaned. With the help similar actions process the remaining two bars.
  • The prepared elements are glued together.
  • The plywood sheet is cut into pieces according to the diagram below.
  • The veneer sheet is cut into eight sheets measuring 32x16 cm. The finished elements are laid one by one on the concave section of the block and each is coated with a layer of epoxy glue. The first layer is laid on a pine block with a sheet of newspaper, and then sheets of veneer. It is important to check that all elements match in size and that there are no gaps.

    American mailbox

    Anyone could make a mailbox with their own hands. It is only important to objectively evaluate your skills and abilities in creating such things and choose a model that the craftsman can make. Mailboxes you can do it yourself simple circuits, even beginners can do it. But more complex forms require sufficient experience and knowledge from the manufacturer.

    The easiest way would be to make a mailbox from wood or plywood; the main thing is not to forget to saturate the parts with an antiseptic.

    What is important to consider when starting to create a mailbox?

    For those who have not yet chosen what their future mailbox will look like, it is important to determine the fundamental parameters before creating it:

    1. What material will it be made of?
    2. What will its dimensions be?
    3. What design to choose for it.

    After the choice is made, you can begin drawings, purchasing necessary materials and directly to the creation of the product.

    Wooden mailbox - manufacturing

    For beginners, the easiest way is to make a mailbox using a very easy pattern from an affordable and easy-to-work material - wood. The process of making this type of mailbox is described below.

    A homemade wooden mailbox will require the following materials and tools:

    • a wooden beam made of inexpensive wood (pine, for example) at least 30 cm long;
    • dense plywood sheet with good moisture resistance;
    • substances for protective treatment wood;
    • self-tapping screws for wooden products;
    • two hinges for the door;
    • door lock and hinge;
    • metal sheet 30 cm long;
    • screwdriver;
    • hacksaw or jigsaw.

    From a wooden beam you need to prepare four guide rails, the thickness of which will be 1 cm, width - 2 cm and length - 30 cm. Then you should make plywood blanks for the walls of the future mailbox. The dimensions of the front and back walls will be 30 cm in length and 25 cm in width. The side panels, there should be only two of them, will have the following dimensions: length 30 cm, width 6 cm. The dimensions of the top and bottom panels should be 25 cm wide and 6 cm long.

    Since all these parts are wooden, even before assembling the mailbox, they should be treated with substances that will ensure long-term protection of the finished product from rain, snow and insects. This will allow for a very long term use a future mailbox for a private home.

    After all the main parts are ready and processed, you can begin assembling the product. All four guide rails must be connected to the back wall, bottom and side panels. To do this, it is best to use prepared screws and a screwdriver.

    Although there is another option - you can put all the parts on glue, in which case it will be better if you use good wood glue.

    The top panel of a wooden mailbox should contain a slot into which the postman can drop letters, newspapers and other correspondence. A skilled craftsman will easily make the required gap in the middle one centimeter wide. There is a simpler recipe for beginners. The remaining plywood panel 25 cm long and 6 cm wide can be cut using a jigsaw (or hacksaw) and made into two panels 25 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Thus, the master will be able to make a 1 cm wide slot by attaching these two thin panels to finished frame above. This simple technique will make it easier to make a homemade mailbox.

    Since the press slot is located in the upper part of the structure, it is reasonable to provide a canopy above it, which would protect all newspapers and letters from possible precipitation. Such a protective panel can be made from a metal plate. Here it is important to adjust its dimensions well to the dimensions of the mailbox itself, and then attach the metal cornice to the top of the product with hinges. It is important to take into account that the cornice itself does not interfere with the postman throwing mail into the slot.

    The front wall is secured last, since it will serve as the mailbox door. With its help, the owner will be able to collect all correspondence from it. To do this, use prepared loops and a lock. The loops should be small and not bulky. At the same time, they need to be very durable and ensure quiet and reliable movement of the door itself. Loops under padlock are mounted on the opposite side, one on the door and the other on the side panel.

    You can improve the finished product by installing an alarm that will notify the owners about the receipt of mail. To do this, you need to make another bottom plywood strip and attach it at the bottom, forming a double bottom. The second plywood is attached to the springs. Between these springs, contact plates from the telephone switch should be placed. Connecting wires from the box you need to run into the house to the battery and the lamp, the latter will light up every time the correspondence gets inside. This simple mechanism will always notify the owners of the arrival of mail.

    Models of homemade mailboxes

    Mailboxes come in a variety of shapes and designs. These products can vary in shape and cost, they are made from all kinds of materials, and the design can only be limited by the imagination and skill of the person who creates them.

    Wooden mailbox. It's quite simple and affordable option mailbox. Depending on the skills of the craftsman, such boxes can be very simple in execution, or they can be carved and show the pinnacle of skill if they are made by professionals who have been working with wood for a long time.

    You can build a simple mailbox from a plastic bottle and two metal brackets.

    Mailbox made from a plastic bottle. This is a small and compact option; large packages of correspondence will not fit here, but it will always look original. Moreover, it is very easy to make such mailboxes from a plastic bottle with your own hands. To do this, a plastic container is placed in a metal or plastic pipe of the appropriate size and secured in a place accessible to the postman.

    Metal mailbox. To make such a device, you need to be able to work with metal and use more complex tools - drill, welding, grinder, etc. However, such a box will last a long time, so the time and effort spent on it is worth it.

    Mailbox made of plexiglass or plastic. This is not always easy to do, because the plastic parts will have to be secured with glue or sealant. Here it is important to choose a good substance for gluing, otherwise the master will have to tinker with such a model for a long time.

    Mail box made from a watch. For this option you will need an old cuckoo clock. The clock mechanism must be disassembled and the front part former watches secure it to a wooden box. In this case, the hole from which the cuckoo used to jump out should coincide with the hole in the wooden base box. This will be the slot into which the postman can drop correspondence. At the same time, do not forget about the door through which the owners can pick up newspapers and letters.

    Log mailbox. First of all, you need to choose a good and thick log. Wood should be cut out of it and a metal box prepared in advance should be inserted into the resulting hole. The mail door should be on the front of the box.

    The door itself can be trimmed with tree bark so that it does not “fall out” from the overall design of the mailbox.

    Installation of a mailbox

    After the wooden mailbox is ready, it still needs to be installed in a place that will be convenient and accessible for both the postman and the owners waiting for mail. Eat different options installation of mailboxes, they can be attached to different surfaces:

    • to the fence - the product is attached to clamps;
    • to the wall of the house - the product is attached to dowels or anchors (their size depends on the wall itself);
    • to another hard surface, for example, to a wooden or metal gate;
    • to a separate rack (American mounting option).

    This simple recipe will help you figure out how to make a mailbox easily and quickly, using simple and available tools and materials.

    A mailbox is an integral attribute of a private home. If it is missing, then the appearance of the house and the entire site will look unfinished. In addition to everything, the lack of a mailbox today is very inconvenient, just as it was before. Although with the development of the Internet and information technology The role of the post office today has diminished slightly and it has become more unloaded in its work, but you still can’t do without it completely. Postal service today it is still necessary to deliver various notifications and correspondence, which is especially important for small cities, towns and villages.

    And the presence of a mailbox, on a house fence or in another place on a personal plot, is already a tradition, and is an integral part of each individual standing house.

    What types of home mailboxes are there?

    Until recently, the traditional mailbox in our country looked like a rectangular or square flat box, which was attached to the house itself, closer to the entrance or to the fence.

    Beautiful mailbox photo

    All correspondence entered the mailbox through its upper part: if the opening was located at the top, then there was often a lifting lid above it to protect it from precipitation. But often the incision was located on the side, and the contents were pulled out at the bottom using an opening door. Such mailboxes almost always looked dull and boring, since in most cases they were all similar to each other, and there was nothing original in their design. In production, such boxes were most often made of metal; individual homeowners, in order to at least somehow distinguish themselves, made them with their own hands from wood.

    Metal street mailbox photo

    As for other countries, the most original and better known to us from films are the street mailboxes of America.

    Appearance They are fundamentally different from their domestic counterparts; traditional American mailboxes resemble a chest with an end door. But it is worth saying that modern Americans are so keen on decoration and original design This attribute makes it almost impossible to find two identical boxes in private homes. This diversity is also generated by the fact that they often hold competitions for the most beautiful and original mailbox.

    Distinctive feature placement of an American street mailbox is that they usually attach it not to a fence or house, but rather it is fixed on a special stand along the road. This makes the postman’s work easier, since he no longer needs to approach every house. It is also worth saying that often at such a postal stand there is a sign with the house number, it can also be decorated in any way, and very often it looks very beautiful and is decorated in uniform style with drawer and stand.

    It is also worth saying that American mailboxes have one more additional function, they are designed not only for receiving correspondence, but also for sending letters. Americans do not need to go to the post office every time to send a letter; they just need to put it in the mailbox and raise a special flag on it, signaling to the postman that there is a letter in the box to be sent. When the postman arrives, he sees the flag and takes the letter for further dispatch.

    Ideas on how to make a mailbox with your own hands can be adopted from neighbors whose fences were decorated with original and functionally convenient correspondence receivers, or you can take into account the options proposed in this article.

    Types of mailboxes

    Classical mailbox - a small rectangular box with a slot for receiving correspondence. It is made mainly of metal or wood. Such boxes are most often found on the streets of post-Soviet cities. The main advantage of a standard mailbox is its ease of manufacture and use.

    English mailbox - a metal box built into the wall of a building, or made in the form of a table or cabinet.

    American mailbox- installed on a separate support (rod made of metal or wood). The box itself often has a special flag that must be raised to signal the postman that there are letters to be sent.

    No matter what style your mailbox is designed in, it must meet the following standards:

    • Be durable.
    • Convenient to use.
    • Protected from moisture.

    Making a standard wooden mailbox with your own hands

    You will need:

    • a piece of plywood at least 5 mm thick;
    • wooden bars 15*15 mm;
    • furniture hinges;
    • small tin plate;
    • jigsaw or file;
    • a set of nails and self-tapping screws.

    Let's start work

    1. From a sheet of plywood, cut out 2 blanks 350*350 mm and 350*370 mm. These are the future walls of our box and sides. For the bottom you need to cut a blank 250*70 mm. From this moment we began to create a mailbox. Anyone can make it with their own hands.
    2. In the upper part you need a gap at least 20 mm wide so that letters and other correspondence can fit freely there. In view of this need, we make the blank 250*50 mm, and place the opening for letters near the edge of the upper part. We make the bottom bar with dimensions of 250*70 mm.
    3. We cut 4 bars 350 and 220 mm in length. They will be located in the corners of the box to provide rigidity to the structure.
    4. For greater durability, before assembling the box, we treat the parts with solutions against insects, fungus and rot.

    Collecting the mailbox

      We remove burrs and small irregularities on all parts using sandpaper. We assemble the bars in the shape of a rectangle, and lay the front wall on top of them. The sides of the bars must be aligned with the ends of the plywood blank, then we fix everything with nails or self-tapping screws. To make the joints more durable, you can first glue them together, and then knock them down with nails.

      We also connect the back wall with the bars. Important! Do not forget about mounting the box to the wall of the building or to the fence. For this purpose, screw 2 lugs to the upper part of the back wall.

      Place the front and back walls on their ends and fasten them together with the side planks (350*70). Upper part drawer, consisting of 2 parts (250*25), we attach first with glue and then with nails, but be sure to leave a gap of at least 20 mm.

      We make the bottom of the box open so that incoming mail can be reached. For these purposes, we screw 2 furniture hinges to the long edge of the plank, to back side install a small corner hinge for the lock. Afterwards, we attach the furniture hinges to the back wall, close the bottom and, at the level of the first lock bracket, install the second one to the front side.

      To avoid moisture getting into the mailbox, we cut it out of tin and then mount a protective canopy to the mailbox. Its edges need to be rounded.

    After assembly, sand again and paint.

    Usually the need for a mailbox is present not only in a country house, but even in a summer cottage. After all, just like a house, it has its own address. That is why any building that has postal address must be equipped with a mailbox.

    There are many options for shape, color and material in the manufacture of a mailbox. It can be cardboard and wood, metal and plastic. All of them may differ from each other not only in material, but also in model, design and price. It’s not difficult to make a mailbox, if you have the desire.

    Most of the mailbox models can be made independently. This applies more to simple options mailboxes. As for more complex structures, then for their manufacture you will need certain skills. In this case, it is better to buy a mailbox ready-made.

    Types of mailboxes

    As previously noted, all boxes are divided into several types. Which option should be preferred when making a mailbox, you will have to choose yourself. The main thing is that the production of the chosen option is feasible.

    In addition, when giving preference to a certain type of structure, you should take into account the overall style of the house, the required capacity and the place for its installation. It is very important to consider the purpose of the mailbox. If it is planned to use it only for its intended purpose, to receive correspondence, then a variant of the form may be of a simpler form. But if the mailbox must also serve a decorative role, then its design must be original in accordance with the interior of the house.

    Several styles can be used to construct a mailbox design. Today there are only three of them.

    Mailbox styles

    This could be the style:

    • Standard design, traditional letterbox style;
    • American performance style;
    • English;
    • Original style.

    A traditional box is an ordinary standard view mailbox design with a slot for correspondence. This is the easiest way to make a mailbox, which can be made from any material.

    American style
    They can be different in appearance and decorativeness. Such boxes are installed only in a horizontal position, which requires nested correspondence; postmen first have to roll it into a tube.

    A distinctive feature of the mailbox in American style is a specially selected checkbox. With its help, the postman can easily determine whether there is correspondence to send. Indeed, in this case, the sender attaches letters for sending and raises the flag accordingly.
    Such a box is installed only on a separately installed support in the form of a pipe, or the support can be made in the form of some kind of figure.

    English style
    The mailbox looks like a column cabinet. Typically this type is made using brick and durable metal. This design is installed near the entrance of the yard to the house. This type of design is more like a miniature house, made taking into account the structural features of the house, than a mailbox. The capacity of this type of mailbox is very large, which allows you to put received correspondence in the box without much difficulty.

    But there is also an original look for mailboxes. This type includes boxes made in accordance with the interior, using design ideas in the form of fabulous transformations of various objects into a mailbox.

    To make a mailbox in an original style, you can use wooden materials, brick and metals. But it should be taken into account that to produce metal, in addition to the material itself, you will need welder skills and a welding machine.

    Whatever option and style of mailbox you choose, do not forget that a mailbox near your home should not disturb the harmony and should fit perfectly into the overall interior.

    Designing and making a box for newspapers and letters is as easy as shelling pears. It is possible to do this and with my own hands. But before you get started, you should use some tips and tricks for making a high-quality mailbox design:

    • When making a structure using wooden material, all its elements must be interlocked with the help of corners. Thus, the product will gain increased strength and will facilitate repair work in the future;
    • If the intended slot for inserting newspapers and magazines is located in its upper part, then to prevent water from entering in rainy weather, a special canopy should be installed above the slot - protection. Thus, you will protect received letters and newspapers from the effects of rain and snow;
    • The door for removing correspondence should be located at the bottom of the box. It is better if it is made in a folding version;
    • When placing a newspaper removal door on the front of a mailbox, everything needs to be carefully designed to prevent gaps between the mailbox panel and the door.
    • To protect your mail from unwanted readers, it is better to include a device in the mailbox design for locking it. This can be either a padlock or an internal one, which is installed on inner part doors and drawers;

    In addition, you can show originality. For example, for sound notification You can install an alarm in your mailbox when you receive correspondence, which is very convenient, especially on days when the weather is bad. But this will require special skills and abilities.

    How to make a mailbox on your own?

The remaining two are transverse lines, and the distance between them should not exceed 300 mm. After this, the main curve is drawn and the bend for the edge is cut out and cleaned using a hacksaw.
    2. Similar work should be done with the remaining two pieces of beams, observing, at the same time, exactly in proportion to the work done on the first piece of the beam.
    3. The finished bars are glued together.
    4. Plywood is cut into pieces according to size.
    5. The cut sheets of plywood should be at least 8 pieces of 320*160 mm each. After this, all the workpieces must be laid on the concave section of the block and treated with epoxy glue. Next, you need to lay a paper sheet on the main block as the first layer, and then a plywood sheet. In order to avoid mistakes, before gluing it is necessary to first place the veneer sheets in accordance with the design. This way, you will check that all the details match, which in turn will show whether everything was done correctly and whether there are any gaps in the mailbox.
    6. Once the glue has dried, the finished cover can be sanded and adjusted to fit the dimensions of the back and front of the mailbox.
    7. On the front part it is necessary to cut a slot for placement postal correspondence and a special opening for removing mail from the box.
    8. A piano hinge is cut along the width of the door and attached with screws.
    9. A mortise lock is installed on the door.
    10. A lid is attached to the box.
    11. After installing the door, the product is sanded using sandpaper.
