When describing your level of proficiency in this technique, you can indicate a list of programs that you know how to use. You also need to write down at what level you know the computer. You can indicate this as follows:

But it’s not worth describing in detail about your knowledge of certain programs. Each applicant can use this example of writing this column:

Experienced user. Too large a list listing all kinds of software can have the opposite effect: the employer will decide that your knowledge is very superficial.

It would be nice if an applicant for the position of sales manager, in addition to the list of basic PC programs, also indicates knowledge of specialized ones. In his resume, the specified section of the “professional skills” column may look like this:

Level of competent user. Skills in searching for specialized information on the Internet, experience working with various browsers (including Explorer, Opera, Chrome and others). Knowledge of the basics of working with Linux and Windows operating systems, basic office programs, text and graphic editors (Word, WordPad, PowerPoint, Access, Paint, Excel, Photoshop). Skills in working with specialized systems “BEST”, 1C:Enterprise (specification “Trade and Warehouse”), experience in working with a CRM system that regulates relationships with customers.

If the position requires more in-depth knowledge of certain programs, then they must be indicated. So, for the position of PHP programmer, in addition to the ability to work with a PC, you may need the following: knowledge of PHP, social media API, WordPress API, CSS, HTML, JS, CSS.

In the latter case, you need to focus on your knowledge and the employer’s requirements.

It can be divided into several main categories: device drivers, software packages for system protection (antiviruses), utilities for operating the OS, applications for working with office documents, programs that provide full Internet access, archivers, packages for improving the quality of video playback or audio, as well as specialized software responsible for the advanced capabilities of computer systems.

Windows OS programs

So, let's look at the simplest computer programs. The list of Windows operating systems, unfortunately, does not meet all the requirements of modern systems. The fact is that after installing the “OS” itself, it contains a minimal set, mostly focused on the use of system utilities.

In fact, it is of no interest to the average user. However, you can find something here. This applies to Windows. But, depending on the version of the operating system itself and the hardware, not all devices may have appropriate drivers. As is already clear, the consequence is partial or complete inoperability of one or another component. That is why correct installation of the required driver is one of the priority tasks for any system.

Drivers

What programs are necessary for a computer from this point of view? First of all, a “native” utility called DirectX. It was missing in earlier versions and had to be installed manually. Now DirectX is included in the standard set of Windows OS.

It is worth noting that this is a universal utility not only for diagnosing basic hardware or some software components. DirectX is also a program for setting up a computer and a tool for finding out the versions of device drivers. With its help, you can determine whether it is worth installing a new driver, and in general, whether it is available in the system itself.

Installing missing drivers

To do this, you can use standard Windows features. For example, "Device Manager" in Control Panel. All devices with missing or incorrectly installed drivers are marked yellow. Using the Properties menu on the tabs, you can find buttons for installing, updating and uninstalling the driver, as well as disabling the device itself.

For example, when it is disabled, the system will display a message indicating that a new device has been detected and will offer to install the appropriate software from its own distribution. This doesn't always help. If the installation fails, you will have to install the driver from the original disk, any removable media, or from the Internet if the network connection is active.

Therefore, it is extremely difficult for the average user to work with what is available immediately after installing the operating system, because many tools that are so necessary for work are simply not available. Let's look at the most basic ones. Applications can be found using the sequence “Menu” / “All Programs” / “Accessories”.

The installed utilities will be listed here, as well as the “System” folder, which contains the necessary programs for the computer that are responsible for diagnostics, maintenance, administration and system recovery.

Standard programs

As for the average user, from the entire proposed list (say, in Windows 7), at best, he may need only four applets: Paint, Explorer, Notepad and WordPad.

However, it is worth considering that the Word document viewer has extremely limited capabilities not only for editing the corresponding files. These applications are also not able to recognize some other formats. That is why it is worth installing additional software that can work with other types of files.

In addition, the Start menu itself contains utilities such as Internet Explorer for working on the World Wide Web and Outlook Express for simple operations with email.

Utilities

Among the utilities included in the standard Windows set, three components are worth mentioning. The most necessary programs for a computer (not counting the others) are presented here as follows: “System Restore”, “Disk Cleanup” and “Disk Defragmenter”.

The first utility is responsible, as is already clear, for restoring the system to an earlier operational state (checkpoint). The second ensures the removal of unnecessary or unused files and folders from the hard drive. The third allows you to defragment, moving frequently called programs, files and directories to the fastest areas of the hard drive, which significantly speeds up access to them.

Microsoft Office

When talking about what the necessary programs for a computer are, one cannot fail to mention such a well-known software package as Microsoft Office. You can't go anywhere without him today.

The applications included in this package allow you to work with almost all the main types of standard documents known today, not counting some specific formats. Let's highlight the most basic programs:

Microsoft Word - text editor with advanced capabilities;

Microsoft Excel - table and tabular data editor;

Microsoft Power Point - presentation creation system;

Many people dislike Windows' native Internet tool (Internet Explorer). And there is a reason for it. We won't go into technical details. At the very least, this browser seems too slow and awkward to use. That's why it is also jokingly called a tool to find and download Opera.

However, you can now find a lot of browser systems. These are, say, Opera, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Yandex Browser, etc. The list can be continued almost indefinitely. Here you just need to test each application to choose the best option for yourself.

Don’t forget about specialized downloaders that can speed up file downloads. This can be anything: from ordinary “Download Wizards” and programs from to practically illegal programs that work with torrent trackers.

Archivers

The archiver application is an integral part of the system, especially when the user actively uses the Internet, downloads applications, installs new ones from removable media, etc. It is no secret that any programs for installation on a computer are supplied in the form of a Setup installation file (sometimes with additional information files, less often in the form of dynamic libraries connected to work through hosts such as DX, VST, RTAS, AAX, etc.). But, as a rule, such files take up a lot of space. In order to save disk space, they are packed into special archives that are smaller in size.

It is precisely archivers that allow you to extract all the data from files of this type. The most famous ones here are WinRAR, WinZIP, 7-ZIP, etc. But here, as with browsers, it is better to immediately study all the capabilities of the application, and only then use it for everyday tasks.

Connecting tablets and smartphones

As for connecting mobile gadgets, which have recently gained incredible popularity, here you can use the “native” utilities that come with your smartphone or tablet. For example, for Apple devices it is iTunes, for Samsung gadgets it is programs like Samsung Kies, etc.

If the software is not included in the package, you can find universal utilities on the Internet that allow you to work on a computer terminal or laptop with a specific device via a USB connection or Bluetooth.

Multimedia

It is impossible not to say a few words about audio and video playback. The problem here is that the system does not always have special codecs and decoders that are responsible for correct work with files of these types. Audio and video encoding and decoding technologies do not stand still. So it is better to install the latest package containing all the tools. The simplest option may be the K-Lite Codec Pack software product. This, as they say, is a universal remedy for all occasions.

However, when setting parameters in a task, you need to select all components. Perhaps some of them will not be needed, but it is not worth the risk. You never know what situations may arise.

It is important to understand that this article provides only a brief overview of the programs and applications that are necessary to operate your computer or use its advanced capabilities. However, it is worth noting that this is a basic functional set that no modern user can do without. Naturally, there are still a huge number of tools that allow you not only to expand the functional base, but also to gain some convenience when working. Or maybe this is not a joke at all, because in most cases it is so: IE is launched only once in its life to install another browser - Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari.

Which one is better? And again it's a matter of taste. Therefore, choose the one you like best. Unlike antiviruses, the differences between browsers are mostly purely visual. Therefore, it is not so important what exactly you choose, the main thing is that it is convenient to use.

Office suite Microsoft Office

There is also a free competitor to OpenOffice, but it is used much less often. Perhaps for the reason that many users have not even heard of its existence.

Which version is better to use? If a computer or laptop is too weak and is designed for work, then Microsoft Office 2003 will be enough. And in order to open files in .docx and .xlsx formats (they are created in the program of new versions from 2007 and higher), you only need to additionally install a compatibility package from Microsoft.

Archivers

Typically, to transfer folders with files over a network, they are packed into an archive and then transferred to the recipient. Firstly, it’s more convenient. Secondly, archivers compress files, reducing their size. But to open such an archive, you need to install this program.

Popular archivers today:

Audio and video codecs

You can communicate with friends not only through VKontakte. One of the popular programs today is Skype (by the way, it can also be installed on a smartphone). It supports text chat, as well as voice and video calling. That is, you can call your friends and see them through a web camera.

Another popular option is ICQ. It's also ICQ. Also an excellent program for instant text messaging.

Computer programs for resumes: briefly about the thematic selection

Computer proficiency level. Is this a familiar phrase? Not surprisingly, it is often found in the form of an applicant’s resume for a certain position.

In addition to the general assessment of knowledge, it may be necessary to indicate specific application applications and their level of proficiency. It happens that you don’t use some of them for a long time and forget the names.

For these and other cases, we will consider small lists of common software and some of their features. From them you can choose the ones you need to study and fill out your resume. Moreover, you don’t have to write everything in it. The main thing is to indicate what will actually be required to perform job duties and what you have knowledge of.

Antiviruses: list and brief description

There is a huge selection of software for PC and mobile devices.

Here is a list of some of the popular antivirus programs:

  • Kaspersky. There are different versions with different functionality. Among them you can find a suitable option for your home or business. I prefer it because I consider it a very powerful and reliable antivirus for both PCs and phones and tablets.
  • ESET NOD32. It's quite reliable. I used it for a long time for one simple reason - in the recent past, my computer was not very powerful, but NOD32 provided good performance.
  • Dr. Web (“Doctor Web”). A good multi-platform antivirus.
  • Avast. Available in free and paid versions. Naturally, the latter have wider functionality.
  • Avira. Quite an interesting and functional antivirus that can be installed on PCs and mobile devices.

The choice of antivirus depends on individual preferences. The only thing, as an experienced system administrator, I want to point out the existing nuance that arises when there are serious suspicions of a threat to computer security.

When thoroughly checking computers for viruses, it is better to do a maximum scan with several programs. However, you cannot have 2 or more antiviruses installed on your computer at the same time.

How then to do this? I won’t go into details now, this is not what the publication is about, but as an option, you can check one through Windows, the other from DOS mode.

Office programs

Among them there are both standard ones for the Windows operating system and additional ones. The latter can be classically divided into paid and free PC software.

So, let's look at what kind of office programs there are for working on a computer.

I will list 2 standard applications for Windows.

  • Notebook. A simple text editor with rather modest functionality.
  • WordPad. There are more possibilities than the previous editor, and less than the analogues described below.

Free office programs include OpenOffice products, among which, according to my observations, the ones listed below are most often used.

  • Writer. Suitable for creating standard text documents. Similar operations are often performed in Word.
  • Calc. It is designed to work with tabular documents.
  • Impress is designed for creating graphic presentations.

Paid office software includes products called Microsoft Office. Among it there are corresponding alternatives to the three options presented above.

  • Word.
  • Excel.
  • PowerPoint.

They usually don't need any introduction. It's hard to meet a user who hasn't heard of them.

There are different versions of the described software. The choice depends on the tasks at hand.

Internet browsers

I present a list of names of alternative browsers.

  • Internet Explorer.
  • Mozilla Firefox.

There are many of them. Among the powerful and frequently used ones, 4 specific programs can be distinguished under the following names:

Everyone is trying to create their own masterpiece; for this they work for years and create individual control algorithms specifically for their parts. Therefore, if you buy, for example, a new video card, you will always find a CD in the package that will contain a program that will control this particular part. And actually, for each part, manufacturers create individual control programs. They are called drivers.

That is, drivers are ordinary programs that should be included with every complex technical device.

When we have finished installing all the drivers on the computer, it’s time to think about your loved ones. You need to install the most necessary programs for your comfortable use of the computer. I want to advise you on a few must-have applications in my opinion.

Archiver - needed for our convenience

Start by being on the safe side and downloading an archiver. These are small programs that act as storage for files and folders. They will come in handy when you download any information from the Internet. Most of the downloaded files will be added to the archives and to get them from there you will need a special program, which is called an archiver.

I always install the best archiver in my opinion, it’s called WinRaR, it’s more than enough for me. It is absolutely free to use and install.

Codecs - increasing the “knowledge” of the computer

Now you are armed with a standard set of programs and are ready to improve your system to its maximum efficiency. Sometimes this becomes an unattainable task, because the computer is not able to open all the files you like, and the reason is very simple. Its capabilities just need to be improved by installing special codecs

Codecs are also small sets of programs that are simply necessary for everyone, because by default, not all music formats, much less video, can be included on the computer. Installing codecs guarantees that you can play your favorite movies in any format.

The idea is simple, imagine that your computer initially knows only one language, and after installing a set of codecs it will know all languages, so no matter what language the file is provided in, your computer will always be able to understand and open it.

So, codecs are the ability of a computer to understand many different extensions and recording formats.
