Until April 2010, it was the second (after MTS) mobile operator in Russia in terms of the number of subscribers. During 2010, VimpelCom lost 2nd position in terms of the number of subscribers and revenue from mobile business MegaFon. Since 2008, VimpelCom has controlled 49.9% of the Russian cell retail market leader, Euroset.

On October 5, 2009, it was announced that Altimo and Telenor had signed an agreement to merge VimpelCom and Kyivstar into new company— VimpelCom Ltd. Alfa Group will receive 43.9% of the voting shares in it, Telenor will receive 35.42%, and another 20.69% will be traded on the NYSE.

In the spring of 2010, VimpelCom lost the title of Russia's second mobile operator to MegaFon due to the latter's reduction in the cost of services rendered and the active deployment of a network of mono-brand stores. At the same time, VimpelCom suspended the construction of a communication network in Russia: according to the results of 2010, VimpelCom, which previously held leading positions, had 9,000 3G base stations, while MegaFon had 20,000. Alexander Izosimov commented on these data as follows: “If you do not invest in

network, you don’t invest enough in retail and at the same time try to maintain premium prices in the market, sooner or later this model stops working.” At the beginning of 2011, VimpelCom instructed Euroset to open at least 1,000 Beeline mono-brand stores by the end of the year.

Brand history

On June 1-2, 1994, the act of acceptance of the system into operation of the new network for 10,000 subscribers was signed. The official start of commercial activities under the brand name "Beeline".

On April 4, 2005, a radical rebranding of the company was carried out. The development of the new brand was carried out by the British agency Wolff Olins, who did the design for The Beatles album covers. It is believed that the brand change led to an increase in Vimpelcom's revenues.

In 2006, after the contract with Vimpelcom ended and was not renewed by the operator, the same agency rebranded the telecommunications companies of AFK Sistema, including VimpelCom's main competitor, the mobile operator MTS.

Until 2011, Beeline was the most expensive brand in Russia according to Interbrand.

Beeline is the only operator whose cellular communication operates on the Commander Islands, an archipelago located in the Bering Sea. There is only one settlement on the archipelago - the village of Nikolskoye, in which the first and only base station is installed.

2015

Total service revenue from the provision of services in 2015 decreased by 4% year-on-year to RUB 67.8 billion as a result of a decrease in service revenue in the fixed segment. At the same time, service revenue mobile segment increased slightly year-on-year, reaching RUB 56.5 billion due to a 16% increase in revenue from mobile data transmission to RUB 12.3 billion compared to the same period last year, and an increase in interconnect revenue. Growth in revenue from mobile data transmission is due to the active promotion of package offers and traffic growth. However, this growth is partially offset by lower voice and roaming revenues due to lower average cost minutes of conversation due to the transition of existing customers of the Company to current tariff plans.

Service revenue in the fixed segment decreased by 21% yoy to RUB 11.3 billion as a result of a reduction in low-margin traffic, as well as a decrease in revenue in the B2B segment due to slower macroeconomic growth.

2016: Tele2 and Vimpelcom will unite networks in 27 regions

The partnership between Vimpelcom and Tele2 does not apply to Moscow and the region, in addition, it does not include 450 MHz frequencies belonging to Tele2 - until it builds a commercial network on them.

The purpose of the agreement is to reduce the operating and capital costs of both companies: from now on, they will share the costs of maintaining and upgrading the network. How significant the savings can be is not specified in the agreement.

2015: The plan of reduction of thousands of employees

Telecommunications operator Vimpelcom (trademark Beeline) has announced a large-scale staff reduction plan. About this in an interview with the TV channel " Russia-24" said the CEO of the operator Slobodin Mikhail.

The exact number of people who will fall under the cuts, Slobodin did not name. But, according to him, there will be "tens of percent." In total, VimpelCom employs 27,000 employees, which means that several thousand people will be left without work.

Slobodin emphasized that the reductions would not affect people who interact directly with customers: in particular, employees of call centers and a mono-brand network.

Reductions will take place in the management sphere: people who, to one degree or another, participate in decision-making, including those at the level of branches and regional offices, will be fired. The number of regional offices will also be reduced.

At the same time, VimpelCom announced that it was merging a number of its macroregions: the Volga and Urals macroregions would be merged into the Volga-Urals region (it will have 18 regional branches), and the Siberian and Far East regions into the Vostok macroregion (it will unite 15 regions).

2013: Beeline creates a special department for digital communications with clients

In VimpelCom the special division on digital communications with clients is created, the executive vice president of the company for development of the mass market said in November, 2013 Alexander Popovsky.

He explained to TAdviser that the new division will be engaged in everything that is connected with interaction with clients online, including the self-service system (personal accounts of clients) and online store. In addition, all contacts with customers through SMS and USSD commands.

Alexander Popovsky explains the need to create such a division by the fact that now digital interaction with clients in the company is fragmented, the tasks associated with it are distributed among several departments, while for the client it is a single system. The creation of a separate unit should provide a holistic approach to this direction.

In the short term, the staff of this division will be about 50-60 people, and subsequently it is planned to transfer employees who physically serve customers in social networks and others, and then the number of staff will be even higher, says Popovsky. Who will become the head of the new division has not yet been determined.

Speaking about the current level of Beeline's digital interaction with customers, the executive vice president of the company for the development of the mass market notes that in the summer of 2013 the operator launched a new version of the personal account that fully meets modern requirements in terms of usability and convenience, which is gaining great popularity.

Compared to the previous version of the personal account, the number of users of the new version has increased significantly, he notes. The number of regular users of the system, according to Alexander Popovsky, as of November 2013 is about 2 million.

The representative of Beeline also notes that this is beneficial for the operator itself - in terms of reducing service costs, and in terms of convenience for the client: “for example, there are often some psychological barriers associated with talking on the phone or in a communication salon besides, it takes more time, and in personal account you can easily see what services are connected, what money is spent on, and more,” Popovsky notes.
