There are most countries in the world, you download the package in advance for a specific area (now you can even not the whole country, but by regions or provinces) and use it offline. Now you can book a hotel or call YandexTaxi from the application.

✔2Gis— convenient when traveling around Russia. There is not only a map, but also a list of organizations in the building, driving directions and even a small historical note.

Languages

✔ Google Translate- a universal translator from 103 languages (online) and 52 (offline), and this list is constantly growing. The ability to receive translations from photos (for 30 languages) is very useful when traveling. Plus speech translation (from 32 languages). In China, I had a good time communicating with people who don't speak English at all on many topics - a very useful app for traveling.

There is also a similar translator from Yandex, you can use it as you prefer.

✔ WhatsApp- allows you to send messages or use it simply for a telephone conversation. Requires much less traffic than Skype and works stably - in Iran I could easily communicate with home thanks to the local 3G Internet and this application.

✔Viber- Free video calls, phone calls and text messages. You can create group chats, which can be convenient at work.

✔ Skype is another useful travel app that allows you to make free video calls to any part of the world via the Internet.

Not all VPNs will work equally well in a given country. For example, in Iran I used Psiphone - it worked great.
