Simple, fast and convenient batch photo processing. Smart image cropping using focal point

Batch file processing is indispensable when working with a large number images that require the same type of editing. Almost any routine surgery, associated with processing (English batch mode), this way can be completed much faster.

For graphic formats possible various options transformations: from changing the image size and format, adding a watermark and text to applying effects and filters. It is noteworthy that many image viewing programs already have built-in similar functions. In addition, as an alternative there are individual programs for processing - converters.

Next, we will consider methods of batch processing of images according to the level of complexity from the simplest to using the functions of such packages as Adobe Photoshop And Adobe Lightroom. At the end of the review - comparison table(Table 1) and conversion performance test (Diagram 1).

Image Tuner

A simple program that works on the “one window” principle and is not too complicated with settings. Files for processing are added on the left side of the window, and conversion parameters are indicated on the right. A preview is available by clicking on the image thumbnail.

Transformation options include changing the hue, size, orientation of the image, and adding a watermark. There are filters available, but they are so simple that they don’t even have settings and for some reason are hidden in the “Resize” section. Half of the settings are in English, the rest is translated into Russian.

The number of formats for saving is small - only 5. At the input, Image Tuner supports such popular formats as JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF, as well as RAW, NEF and others.

Thus, a very simple converter for the most basic processing images.

The IrfanView viewer, while free and small size, supports and includes converter functions accessible through the “Batch Conversion/Rename...” menu. There are three modes to choose from: batch renaming, conversion and mixed.

About 20 formats are available for saving (the “Output format” menu), although the parameters are not available for each of them.

The selection of other transformations is only possible when activating “Use advanced options...” by clicking the “Advanced” button. Settings allow you to resize, crop the image, flip horizontally or vertically, add a watermark - standard set for graphics viewer.

However, in practice it becomes clear that the “advanced” options are not at all intuitive: the thing is that there is no preview window (the preview in the main window refers to the original image). Of course, you can crop a photo or change its size pixel by pixel. How to deal with filters for adjusting brightness, balance and other color parameters when you need to specify numbers? Based on the above, after applying the transformations and exiting “Advanced”, the changes can only be seen after the conversion is complete. But for batch renaming files, test mode is available.

Thus, call IrfanView convenient converter images are not allowed. It can only be used for basic transformations, which do not require any preliminary consideration: changing the image orientation, size and saving format.

AVS Image Converter is part of the AVS4You suite of image processing programs. Apparently, this is why the 27 MB distribution package (which is not so small for a converter) includes the Software Navigator and Update Manager auxiliary utilities.

There are 8 supported image formats for recording, and a little more than 20 for reading. For processing, you can import photos from Flickr or Facebook accounts (after prior authorization).

The graphical interface is user-friendly inexperienced user: Some functions have been simplified or replaced with presets. When resizing an image, presets are available for different monitors and standard photo proportions, which is especially useful when publishing on the Internet.

There are few conversion settings (the “Correction” tab): changing brightness, contrast, color temperature; blur/sharpen effects, adding texture. The last tab is “Watermark”, which allows you to overlay an image or text on a photo.

FastStone Photo Resizer

Most of all, the batch conversion here is reminiscent of IrfanView. But, unlike the latter, FastStone Photo Resizer is not so “hostile” towards the user and provides convenient advanced options.

The interface is divided into two parts - which is not very rational, since the area for selecting files takes up most of workspace.

After adding images to the conversion queue, you can specify the output image format (“Output Format”) and the saving folder (“Output Folder”).

To access transformation tools, the “Use Advanced Options (Resize...)” option is activated. The set of transformations is purely basic: resizing, perspective, adding text, a watermark, a frame. Settings can be saved or loaded from a configuration file, just like in most reviewed programs. There is no viewing window.

IN separate tab“Batch Rename” is a tool for batch renaming files. In addition to the standard name change using a mask, the “Search” function is interesting and Replace", with its help it is easy to correct the names of files without completely changing the name.

XnConvert is a spin-off from the popular image viewer XnView. In fact, all the same actions performed in the XnConvert environment can be performed in XNView (as discussed below), however, the standalone converter has a number of differences. First of all, it is not intended for viewing. On the one hand, nothing distracts from the functionality. On the other hand, if you need to find out the most basic information about the source file, you have to turn to another viewer program.

To begin working with the program, you need to specify the files to be processed (drag and drop is supported, you can also specify using buttons). Please note that at the top there are columns for sorting. When you click on any of them in context menu There are many other options to choose from - the list is huge. However, it would be more convenient if the files were displayed in the form of a table rather than thumbnails - then it would be convenient to view information about source files, otherwise it simply does not exist, and the sorting is somewhat “conditional” in nature - it is not clear what it is for.

The main tab where the list of transformations is collected is “Actions”. For free program The number of settings is pleasantly surprising. Transformations are divided into 4 groups:

  • Image - for the most part, working with transformation and file properties.
  • Correction - working with levels, color.
  • Filter - applying blurring, sharpening, and changing focus effects.
  • Miscellaneous - for the most part, all the same effects.

The output data tab specifies options for saving processed files: name mask, location and graphic format. For popular formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc.) it is possible to specify additional options conservation. There is an inconspicuous, but very useful option for export - you can upload processed photos to a Picasa or Flickr account, package or send via FTP or email.

Import/export of scripts (transformation settings) are available at the bottom of the window, the “Load script” button.

Also available for reading huge amount formats - more than 500 (of those supported XNView viewer), with the caveat that specific ones require installation of GhostScript or a CAD plugin.

Briefly about the possibilities of batch photo processing in XnView. The settings window can be called up through the “Tools - Batch Processing...” menu.

First of all, the interface is different from XNConvert. It consists of only two tabs, the first one specifies the format and saving options. In the second tab there is a list of transformations that, to activate and configure, need to be added to right side windows. The ability to save scripts is also provided, but the format is not compatible with XnConvert: here XBS, in XNConvert - BAT.

Adobe Photoshop

Download page

Of course, Adobe Photoshop graphics package has built-in necessary tools for batch photo conversion. Current on at the moment version - CS6, this review covers CS5. Processing can be done using actions, a Batch operation (“File - Automate - Batch…”) or an Image Processor script (“File - Scripts - Image Processor…”).

First way

First, through the Actions palette, an action is recorded that will be applied to each image. It is best to take a “test sample” for this purpose. On this step the list of possible transformations is limited only by Photoshop tools. Next, the Action is saved to a specific Set. Once finished, the action can be edited anywhere: for example, optimized by removing unnecessary actions.

To mass-apply an action, after recording and editing it, you need to go to the “File - Automate - Batch...” menu. In the “Play” settings group, the desired action is selected, the source and destination folder are determined. Additionally, you can specify a mask for naming files.

Second way

Most often, the second processing method using the Image Processor script will be more acceptable. It is convenient for performing such simple actions, such as changing the format or resizing the image. You can access the settings through the menu “File - Scripts - Image Processor...”. The convenience of the approach is that there is no need to record the action. All other settings are almost the same as the above method. Saving is only possible in JPEG/PSD/TIFF.

Diagram 1. Comparison of processing speed in image resizing mode

It was not possible to determine the speed of operation in the Photo Converter program, since the shareware version only allows processing of 5 images.

Need to crop a lot of images? There are quite a lot free tools to solve such a problem. But what if you are using someone else's computer (for example, in an Internet cafe) or not installed Photoshop? The solution can turn into a nightmare with sorting through pictures, especially if each has its own requirements for cropping boundaries.

But there is free service Cropp.me which will crop any images for you to any size given size...automatically.

To start the process, you need to go to the Cropp.me website and click on the button Upload Your Images(Upload your images).

Clicking the button will open a window file manager. Choose required images and start the download. Then select the crop size on the screen. You can choose several sizes or add your own.

The cropping process may take a long time (depending on the number and size of images), but when completed, thumbnails will appear on the right side of the screen. Hover your mouse over a thumbnail to view options, edit, or expand the entire resulting image. Uncheck the box to prevent the result from loading if you don't like it.

Clicking on the edit button gives you the option to change the size of the cropped area. When the result satisfies you. click the button Confirm(I confirm).

If you have uploaded multiple images, the navigation button will help you select a set of relevant thumbnails to edit.

After checking all the images, click Download All Cropps(Download all cropped images) to download the result to your computer.

The result will be downloaded as an archive.

We unpack the archive and find cropped images there.

The service uses a clever algorithm to determine the cropping area.

The image size does not always correspond to the desired size, fortunately now it is possible to change it without special effort by using special programs. Most often, they have additional functionality that allows you to edit photos. In this article we will analyze several representatives of such software, consider a variety of programs that do an excellent job of changing images.

The name of the first representative reflects all its functionality. “Photo Crop” was developed exclusively for these purposes; it offers you to quickly and easily crop or resize any image. All actions take place in one window, and the process itself is easy and will be understandable even to inexperienced users.

It is worth noting that this program is not suitable for working with several files at once, only one at a time, but the ability to use templates will help speed up the process a little. You only need to specify the parameters once, and then they will be applied to all uploaded images.

Paint.NET

A slightly improved version of the familiar one to all operating room owners Windows systems– Paint. This program has added a number of functions that will help you work with images. Thanks to the innovations, Paint.NET can be considered a full-fledged and convenient graphics editor, which is also capable of cropping photos.

Working with layers is supported, but here you cannot load several files and crop them at the same time, only each one in turn. In addition to regular cropping, there is a proportional resizing tool that will help in some situations.

Picasa

Picasa is a program from a company known to many users, which already inspires confidence. Picasa is not just a photo viewer, it interacts with social networks, recognizes faces and offers tools that help you edit images.

Separately, I would like to note the ability to sort photos - this is one of the important differences of this representative. The main emphasis was placed on this function. Using the organizer, sort by various parameters, which allows you to quickly view certain pictures, even if they are saved in different folders.

PhotoScape

PhotoScape has a wide range of features and tools. The program provides almost everything you need to crop photos and more. I was pleasantly surprised by the presence of batch editing, which will be very useful when cropping photos. You simply set one parameter and select a folder with files, and the program will do everything itself, and as a result, processing will not take much time.

In addition, there is a tool for creating GIF animation. It is implemented quite conveniently and easy to use. PhotoScape is distributed free of charge, which is another huge advantage, and is available for download on the official website of the developers.

Resize Images

This program was created by one domestic developer exclusively for cropping photographs. Present batch editing, you just need to specify the directory with the files, and the program will scan it and select suitable images. There are not many settings here: you can select the width, height of the image and one of two types of processing.

Unfortunately, at the moment, the developer is no longer working on Resize Images and new versions will most likely no longer be released, so there is no point in hoping for any innovations. However, it is worth noting the excellent implementation of the present functionality.

Photo Editor

Photo Editor– a full-fledged photo processing program. It will help you edit the color, size and add various effects to choose from. You can also play a little with the faces using the caricature tool. As for cropping pictures, Photo Editor does an excellent job of this task and even has the ability to batch edit.

In addition, the program offers tools for editing color, horizon level, removing red eye and adjusting sharpness. Photo Editor is available for free on the official website, but there is no Russian localization.

GIMP

GIMP is a free graphics editor that comes with large number tools and functions for drawing and image processing. GIMP is suitable for both home use amateurs and professionals alike. There is support for layers, which will be useful when working with complex projects.

There is no batch editing, since the main function of the program is not cropping photos. The disadvantages include poorly implemented work with text and an overly busy interface, which can cause misunderstanding for inexperienced users.

Image Studio

This representative is suitable exclusively for cropping photographs, but some nice additions are available. For example, a small image color editor. By moving the sliders, the user can adjust brightness, contrast and gamma. There is also the addition of watermarks, which will help protect the image from copying and make it copyrighted.

Altarsoft Photo Editor

Altarsoft Photo Editor is a simple graphic editor with minimum set functions. There is nothing in it that would distinguish this representative from a dozen others similar programs. However, how free option for users who don't need a lot of tools, Photo Editor may exist.

It allows you to edit photos, add captions, apply effects and filters. In addition, there is screen capture, but it is implemented this function very bad, the images are of low quality.

RIOT

Main task RIOT programs– compress photos to reduce their weight. This is done by changing the quality, format or size. Present and batch processing, which will help save a huge amount of time. You only need to select the settings once, and they will apply to everyone specified files. RIOT is distributed free of charge and available for download on the official website.

In this article, we have analyzed a list of programs that offer users the function of cropping images. Some representatives are graphic editors, some were created specifically to perform this operation. They are different and at the same time similar, and the choice depends only on the user.

The free Easy Image Modifier program is designed to batch reduce the size of images. Using the program, you can reduce the size of several photos at once from given settings. Naturally, you can reduce the size and change the properties of an image one by one, processing only one specific photo in the Easy Image Modifier program.

Easy Image Modifier also allows you to enlarge images. Just keep in mind that if you increase the image size, the quality of the photo may suffer.

Resizing an image may be necessary in many cases. Much more often you may need to reduce the size of photographs than, for example, enlarge images. Uploading images to the Internet, sending images via email, all this requires reducing the weight of photographs.

To reduce the image size you can use a simple, tiny free Easy program Image Modifier. You can download the Easy Image Modifier program from the official website of the developer.

easy image modifier download

The free Easy Image Modifier program has an older paid version- Easy Image Modifier Plus, in which some options are added to the program (saving in JPG2000, PDF formats, more advanced editing).

The Easy Image Modifier program supports the Russian language and does not require installation on your computer. After downloading the program to your computer, you will need to unpack the archive with the program. To launch the program, you will need to open the folder and run the “EasyImageModifier” file (type - application).

Since this program is portable, you can run Easy Image Modifier from any place convenient for you on your computer or, for example, from a flash drive. For ease of launch, you can create a shortcut to the program on the Desktop.

After launch, the main window of the Easy Image Modifier program will open. Under the menu bar on the left there are sections with buttons to perform certain actions. On the right are the buttons “Upload image”, “Upload folder”, “Process”. Below these buttons is the program's work area.

Using the “Upload images” and “Upload folder” buttons, images for processing are added to the program.

The added image will be displayed in a special window, which is located close to the main program window.

You can start editing one photo or add several more to this list graphic files for batch processing.

If you no longer want to edit some images, you can delete them from the Easy Image Modifier program by first selecting these photos using the “Delete Selected” button. If necessary, you can delete all photos added to the program by clicking on the “Clear list” button.

To add the contents of a folder to Easy Image Modifier, you will need to click on the “Upload Folder” button. All images from the folder will be added to the Easy Image Modifier program, including those folders that are inside the selected folder.

Then you can proceed to editing by selecting the appropriate item in the “Editing” section.

In this review, I added one image to the program. When batch reducing photos, exactly the same actions are performed. In most cases, it will be enough just to select the size for the images, the format in which the images will be saved, and select the folder to save. After this, you can start the photo processing process.

Resizing Photos

To reduce or increase the size, you will need to click on the “Resize” item on the left side of the program window. In the new program window, you will need to activate the “Activate resizing” item. In the “Saving” section you can select the format for saving the image. By default, the program will save images in JPG format.

The Easy Image Modifier program offers the following formats for saving images:

  • JPG - lossy compression, small file size.
  • PNG - compression without loss of quality, average file size.
  • BMP - uncompressed, largest file size.

After activating the “Quality” item, you can additionally, if necessary, adjust the image quality by moving the slider along the quality adjustment scale.

After clicking on the “Rename” button, if necessary, you can activate the “Activate name change” item to rename images.

After clicking on the “Set Destination” button, in the window that opens you can select a location to save the processed images. Here, by default, the “Activate Destination” item is activated so that the processed photos are saved in another location and do not replace the original files.

A folder has been selected in the program to be created on the Desktop. You can choose to save to any other folder on your computer.

Finally, in the main program window, click on the “Process” button to start the image conversion process. Next comes the process of converting the file or files if the photos are processed in batch mode.

Conclusions of the article

Batch editing photos in the free Easy Image Modifier program allows you to reduce the size of images, choose a display method, add a watermark, and remove metadata from the image.

Easy Image Modifier - batch image processing (video)

Various programs are used to batch crop photos. And there are a lot of applications that have this function, from large and well-known editors - such as Photoshop, to small and unknown programs.

I would like to say a few words about one small and not very well-known program.

Image Tuner - convenient for batch photo processing

The program itself is small and works quickly. The only disadvantage of this program is the lack of Russian language. Maybe you can find a Russian translation for this program on the Internet, but I didn’t look for it, for me it’s not critical. In principle, the program interface is very simple and understandable, and I think you can do without the Russian language.
Image Tuner features when working with images:

1. Trimming, reducing weight
2. Conversion to popular formats
3. Watermarking
4. Some effects
5. Batch processing (this feature is most important to me).

I started using this program quite recently. Previously, there was no need to work with batch image processing. When I needed to process photos in batch mode, I started looking for such programs. And after trying several applications, I settled on Image Tuner.
Photoshop and other monster editors - I don’t count them. I have such programs, but when I need to process quickly and in batches, then Image Tuner is just right. Link to the program.
