In this article, I will talk about various solutions that may come in handy when pages in your browser stop opening. The internet is there and it works. Programs such as Skype, various torrent clients and the like continue to work and access the Internet. Websites don't open in all browsers. When you try to open some page, it first takes a long time to load, and then an error appears that the page is not accessible, and the browser could not open it. The text of the error itself may differ depending on the browser.

In Opera and Chrome, for example, the error: "No internet connection", or "Unable to access the site." In the Mozilla browser: "Server not found", in Yandex Browser: "Unable to connect to the site", and in Microsoft Edge (which is in Windows 10): "Could not open this page."

It doesn't matter what browser you have, in any case, the pages will not open. But here the important point is that the Internet works on the computer. There is no yellow exclamation mark next to the cable connection or Wi-Fi icon. If it is, then this is another problem, and there are other solutions. If you have such a case, then write in the comments, I will give links to instructions. Perhaps your Internet is connected through a router or modem, in which case the sites may not open on all devices. I will write about this below.

Well, there are still situations when only some sites do not open on the computer. Usually these are search engine sites, or social networks: Odnoklassniki, Vkontakte, Facebook, etc. In this case, the solutions that I will discuss below should correct this situation.

And one more thing: it doesn't matter which version of Windows is installed on your computer, just like the browser. I will show on the example of Windows 10. In Windows 7 and Windows 8, the solutions will be the same. If somewhere the actions are different, I will write about it.

Why browsers do not open sites? How to fix?

It was possible to immediately launch heavy artillery into battle and talk about difficult decisions (though often the most effective), but as practice shows, it is better to first apply a few simple steps, which also often help to get rid of a particular problem.

• Restarting the computer, router, modem is the first thing. Did not help? Go ahead.
• If you have Internet through a router, and pages do not open on all devices, in all browsers, then it makes sense to call the provider's support and report the problem. It is possible that they have some kind of hardware failure, and due to problems with DNS servers, sites do not open.
• If the problem is on one device, or the Internet is connected directly to the computer, then it makes sense to temporarily disable the antivirus.
• Very rarely, the problem appears suddenly. Think about it, maybe browsers stopped loading sites after changing some settings, treating viruses, installing programs, antiviruses, etc. This is very important. After all, you can always undo any changes, or remove installed programs.
• If possible, connect another device to the Internet, another computer, and try to go to some site. If everything opens, then you can eliminate the problem on the side of the provider, in the router, or modem.

If the above tips did not help, then do not be upset, I have a few more good solutions. First, I will talk about the most effective solutions, based on my own experience, and feedback in the comments to other articles.

DNS issue is the most common cause

It is because of problems with DNS addresses that most often it is not possible to access sites. And Skype and other programs can still work without problems. In this case, the browser may say that the DNS server could not be found, or something like that. What should be done:

1. Change DNS in the connection properties on the computer. I advise you to register DNS from Google. If the problem is on all devices, then DNS can be registered in the router settings, or separately on mobile devices.
2. Reset the DNS cache. It's like an extra way. It is enough to open the command prompt as an administrator, run the command ipconfig /flushdns, and restart your computer.

After reboot (or even without it) everything should work. How to change DNS in the router settings, I showed in the article, the link to which I gave above.

We check the properties of the browser (educator), disable the proxy

You need to check some settings in the properties of the educator. Is there an automatic configuration script set there, and are proxy servers installed. Since the settings are set in the properties of the educator, they apply to all browsers. And various viruses and malware often make changes to these settings, after which the sites stop coming off.

Go to the control panel. Switch the view to "Large Icons", find and open "Educator Properties". This is in Windows 7 and XP. If you have Windows 10, or 8, then this item is called there "Browser Options". It can be found and run through the search.

Go to the "Connections" tab, and click on the "Network settings" button. Another window will open. Check that the settings match those that I have in the screenshot below.

Proxy servers and automatic configuration scripts must be disabled. If any parameters were set there, then after disabling them, everything should work.

Solution in the Windows registry

Press the key combination Win + R, in the Run window, type regedit and click OK. The Registry Editor will open. Let's go to the section:

In the window on the left there will be different options. We are interested in the parameter AppInit_DLLs. The value of this parameter must be empty. If you have something written there, then double-click on the AppInit_DLLs parameter to open it, delete everything from the "Value" line, and click Ok.

If you do not find the desired parameter in this section, then do not worry. Just restart your computer.

Clearing the routing table, resetting the TCP/IP protocol

You can try clearing all network settings. If you have Windows 10, then this can be done through the settings by pressing just one button. I wrote more about this in the article:. Or do everything as shown below.

Important! If you have a connection to an ISP configured, or you set some static IP settings to access the Internet, then after resetting the settings, you will most likely need to reconfigure the connection. If you are not sure that you can do this, then it is better not to do a reset.

First, clean up the routing table. Start a command prompt as an administrator and run the following command ( copy it to the command line and hit enter):

Restart your computer and check the result.

If this does not help, then start the command line again, and run these two commands in turn:

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset

After that, you also need to restart your computer. Then open the browser, and try to open some page. If the sites still do not open, try the other recommendations in this article.

Sites not opening due to hosts file

It makes sense to check the contents of the hosts file. Especially if you have a problem with opening only certain sites. For example: vk.com, ok.ru, etc. If not a single page opens in your browser, then the problem is hardly in the hosts file.

In File Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. You can simply copy this path and paste it into the explorer. Next, open the hosts file with notepad.

It should look something like this (I have Windows 10):

If you have some other lines there that you did not write yourself, then you can try to delete them and save the hosts file.

Or just search the Internet for a standard hosts file, copy the contents to your file and save. V Windows 7, 8 and 10 the contents of the file will look the same as in the screenshot above.

Viruses and malware - the cause of the error "Cannot access the site"

If you have already tried different solutions, but the sites still do not want to open in browsers, an error appears that the page is not available, then it is possible that your computer is infected with some kind of virus, or all this is the trick of some kind of malware. Especially if you don't have an antivirus installed on your computer.

Malicious programs often change some settings, network settings, browser settings. As a result, sites stop opening, and the Internet continues to work.

I recommend downloading one of the utilities that are designed to find and remove malware and scan your computer. Also install an antivirus (if not available), and run a computer scan. Among the anti-virus utilities I would recommend: AdwCleaner, HitmanPro, Dr.Web CureIt!, Zemana AntiMalware, Junkware Removal Tool.

These utilities can be easily downloaded from the Internet. It is very easy to use them. Most in Russian.

A few more points:

• There is information that pages may not load due to Avast antivirus. Everything starts working only after disabling or completely removing the antivirus.
• If after applying some solution everything worked, but after a while the problem returned, then most likely this indicates that the computer is infected, and the virus writes back some parameters, due to which the problem returns.
• Check if the time and date are correct on your computer.

The influence of viruses and the work of anti-virus software on smartphones is not too felt - things are different on a computer. Remember: no need to send sms at login, unless you forgot your password (login) and are trying to restore the page.

Solution: the best way out of the situation would be to reinstall the system and change the antivirus that missed the threat.

The antivirus works too well, so social networking sites that use cookies are exposed to protective screens - the program makes them inaccessible, considering them dangerous.

Solution:

• Test your guess by turning off the screens and running the site.
• If the problem has disappeared, reactivate the antivirus (you cannot leave the PC unprotected).
• Go to Settings and add the VK site to the list of exceptions. So the antivirus will continue to work, but the restrictions on the social network will not apply.
• Pay close attention to what links you open, what applications you install for VKontakte - they can threaten the security of your computer, and since the antivirus will not work on the site, there is a threat of virus infection.

Solution:

1. Go to My Computer and open Local Disk C. Then follow the path Windows\System32\drivers\etc. There will be several files in the folder, find hosts.
2. We went the way to the desired folder, but the file was not found. It may be hidden. Displaying hidden files for operating systems Windows XP, Windows 7, 8 is described below.
3. Select the file and open with Notepad.
4. If there are a lot of letters and characters, delete everything except the line 127.0.0.1 localhost.
5. Save your changes.
6. Restart your computer or laptop.

8. After authorization, change the password (think more complicated and write it down so as not to forget).

The last reason for possible problems with VK remains - temporary files accumulated in the browser, slowing down its work and restricting access to sites.

If a couple of hours ago you leafed through the news feed, listened to music and watched videos, and now Vkontakte is not working, you don’t have to immediately try all the options offered, right up to reinstalling Windows in desperate attempts to access the social network. Wait a bit: if the problem is on the VK side, it will be solved soon. If after a couple of hours VK does not load, contact your provider, and only after that proceed with manipulations with the computer. This does not apply to clearing the cache - the procedure is useful at any time.

And it seems that everything is fine with friends and the site loads normally, but it doesn’t want to work on our computer and that’s it. 1. Clear your browser cache.

This solution quite often helps when Odnoklassniki does not work. The fact is that you may have visited Odnoklassniki when you had interruptions with the Internet, the page did not load, and this information about the unloaded site remained in the browser cache. Then, when the Internet started working again, we began to go to the site, and the browser began to give us the old information from the cache, which it had stored for itself. You need to clear the cache.

2. The site is blocked in the host file.

On the computer there is such a file called host, with which you can deny access to any site. This file is simply opened, the names of the sites are entered there and the file is saved. And that's all, after restarting the computer, the sites indicated there will not be loaded in our browsers. So, perhaps someone who knows about this feature, who does not want to visit the Odnoklassniki website from this computer, wrote in the host file: odnoklassniki.ru. I restarted the computer and everything, the site does not load and it seems it is not clear what is the reason. Also, it may not be the trick of some person, but the harm caused by the virus.

In order for Odnoklassniki to load again, you need to edit the host file. I have already described in detail in one of my lessons how you can block and vice versa unblock a site in this file: "". Check out this tutorial and, if necessary, clean up the host file. Maybe, Odnoklassniki not working precisely because they are blocked in the host file.

3. The computer is infected with a virus.

It is possible that a virus from the Internet entered the computer, blocked access to Odnoklassniki through the host file or in other ways. In general, I recommend scanning all computer hard drives for viruses completely. This is also possible, I personally had this only with VKontakte. The social network didn’t load for me, but in fact my friends, who had another VKontakte provider, worked for me, and I tried to log in from the phone - everything worked fine. And the fact is that I was sure that everything was in order with my computer, since everything worked fine for just a couple of hours.

This is my personal opinion that the provider has closed access to the site, thereby reducing the load on their equipment. There is, of course, no confirmation of this. I believe that the provider decided to save some money and closed access. I can imagine how many people are constantly breaking into social networks.
