4. Set up an Internet connection

If the Internet still does not work, the router needs special settings. Exactly what settings you need depends on your specific device model and Internet service provider. Once you have obtained the manual for setting up your model, follow its prompts. If in the process you set up both an Internet connection and a home Wi-Fi network, you can skip the fifth point of the article.

In the settings menu, find the section responsible for the wireless network (see the documentation for your router model). Here, be sure to set a strong password (you will need it to connect your devices to the router via Wi-Fi) and select WPA2-PSK as a means of protection.

6. Change the password to enter the router settings

But this option is not without its negative sides: it’s easy to connect, but the network loses stability, which is accompanied by a decrease in speed. If there are serious reasons not to use a cable for the connection, this would not be the worst option. When using the wireless method of connecting and connecting routers, you should keep in mind that not all devices support WDS mode; this mainly applies to outdated models.

Wireless bridge based on WDS

A wireless network bridge can be created simply by connecting two routers into one Wi-Fi network, but the process itself is complex and lengthy.   8. Select the desired network - “Connect”.
  9. Specify the “Key Type” and “Password” of the main device network, then “Save”.
  10. Go to “DHCP Settings”, disable the DHCP server.

Connecting an access point (AP) to the router

  7. Activate the “Connect to access points in the list of remote bridges” function.
  8. Enter the MAC address of the second access point with the value 00:0E:A6:A1:3F:6E – “Add”.
  9. Click on the “Finish” button, then “Save and Reload”.

Setting up a second AP

  1. Open the menu and specify the network name (SSID), it must match the first AP.
  2. Open the DHCP server in the IP Config menu.

  5. Enter the MAC address of the first access point with the value 00:0E:A6:A1:3F:87 – “Add”.

Enable "Wireless network connection" on the laptop

If your wireless connection is disabled, or the Wi-Fi driver is not installed, the connection status will look like this:

As I wrote above, this happens due to the adapter being turned off, or due to the lack of a driver. Let's first check if your "Wireless Network Connection" is disabled. Click on the internet connection icon and select Network and Sharing Center.

Nowadays, on laptops, a keyboard shortcut is used to disable/enable the wireless network. As a rule, different manufacturers have different keys. But usually it's Fn+F2. So on Asus laptops. If in the adapter management window there is no “Wireless network connection” adapter at all, but there is definitely Wi-Fi on your computer/laptop, then this means that The driver for the Wi-Fi adapter is not installed.

I have not yet seen a case where after installing Windows 7, the system itself installed the driver for the Wi-Fi adapter. This is much better in Windows 8. Windows 10 often installs the necessary drivers itself. So, after installing Windows, in order to use Wi-Fi, you need to install a driver specifically for your laptop or adapter (very often, adapters from different manufacturers are installed in one laptop model. It is because of this that you can see several drivers for Wi-Fi on the manufacturer’s website).

We go to the device manager.

In Device Manager, open the tab Network adapters, and looking for a driver for Wi-Fi. I have it called Atheros AR9485WB-EG Wireless Network Adapter, it is installed. You should also have something like a Wireless Network Adapter.

If you don’t have a wireless connection, then most likely you won’t find an adapter either. You need to install the driver, then Wi-Fi will work. And also, if the driver for the Wireless Network Adapter is not installed, then in the device manager there will be at least one unknown device with a yellow exclamation mark. Driver installation

All you need to do is download the required driver and install it. It is best to download the driver from the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop/adapter, and for your laptop (or adapter) model.
