The sound in the laptop disappeared completely. Turn on sound in BIOS

If you encounter a problem where there is no sound on your laptop, you should consistently check the main possible causes of this malfunction.

1. Volume is turned off in settings.

To check if the sound is muted directly in the volume settings. To do this, you need to pay attention to the speaker icon next to the clock in the lower right corner of the screen. Left-click on it and look at the volume level.

2. Laptop speakers are disabled.

To check if your laptop's speakers are disabled in its settings, you should right-click on the speaker icon. Next, you need to select the “Sound” menu item and in the window that opens, select the “Playback” tab.

The playback settings window will display a list of available devices for audio playback. You need the "Speakers" item. Make sure there is a green check mark in the corner of the speaker icon to indicate that the speakers are on. If there is a red arrow there, you need to turn on the speakers by right-clicking on the icon and selecting “Enable”.

3. Check that the Windows Audio service is enabled

To check if the Windows Audio service is enabled on your laptop, you need to launch the Services window. You can do this by typing the word services.msc into the command line (Start - Run). In the list of services you need to find Windows Audio and check that its status is “Running”. Otherwise, you can enable the service by right-clicking on its name and selecting “Properties”.

In the window that opens, you need to click on the “Run” button and click the “OK” button.

4. Checking driver functionality

To check whether the sound device driver is working, you need to go to the “Control Panel” and open the “Device Manager”. In the list of devices you need to find the section “Sound, video and gaming devices”, and in it - your audio card.

If there is an exclamation point icon next to it, this means that you need to update the device driver. This can be done using the driver disk supplied with the laptop or on the manufacturer’s official website.

5. Checking the functionality of the speakers

To check if your speakers are working properly, try connecting external speakers or headphones to the 3.5mm audio jack. If sound is available in them, then the reason is in the laptop speakers and you need to contact a specialist to check them.

However, if all of the above steps did not help when the sound on the laptop disappeared, you should contact

Greetings, dear readers.

You can often find messages on the Internet from users who express their dissatisfaction with the fact that they suddenly lost sound on their Windows 10 laptop. And they have no idea why this happened. Consequently, they don’t know how to deal with the problem. In this case, the disease manifests itself with different “symptoms”. Some have no reproduction at all. For others, only through the front panel. In general, there are many signs. In the article below, I will talk about the most common of them, and also share solutions.

Many people, immediately after they lose sound on their computer, begin to panic. They don't know what to do or how to fix this situation. As mentioned above, the solution directly depends on the reason. But there is the simplest option that will allow you to return everything to its place without careful disassembly. First, download a free antivirus, for example Dr Web Cureit, and scan your system for viruses; if that doesn’t help, you need to do the following:

Updates( )

If problems started after updating the OS, perform several steps:

Driver( )

One of the most common variants of the disease is the absence of sound after updating, restoring, or even a clean installation of the operating system. In this case, most often the corresponding pictogram has a familiar appearance. Going to " device Manager", we find out that here too the icons are in order and in general the whole direction " works as expected».

In this case, the sound card may be called “High Audio...” or something similar. It is this situation that primarily indicates that the system contains incorrect drivers. This can often be observed in Asus laptops, as well as computers with Realtek and VIA HD chips.

The solution to the situation on all devices is to install a normal driver. To do this, you need to perform a chain of actions:

We go to the search engine, where we enter the model of the laptop or motherboard. This can be found in the Everest app or similar. Moreover, initially it is better to go to the official page of the entire device, and not a specific node.

Next, you need to select the appropriate utility in the support section and download it. It is worth considering that it may be for previous versions of operating systems - this is normal. But you can’t confuse the bit depth. It can be viewed in " Properties", when you call them to " Computer».

    Installing a new driver.

Unfortunately, this doesn't always help. This way the system shows that the entire process was successful. But in fact, nothing has changed. Why is this happening? This situation is due to the fact that the system decided to leave the previous version, because, in its opinion, it is newer or better. This is indicated by "" in the component properties.

But don't worry, there is a solution:
Right-click on the installer and select “ Properties».
Go to the tab " Compatibility", and select the previous OS version. It could be Win 7 or 8 instead of 10.

The following option may also help:

Services( )

In some situations, audio services may not respond. In most cases, this is due to the activity of viruses on the device. First, download Comodo Internet Security and scan your PC for viruses, if this does not help, based on this fact, the following chain of actions is built:

Solution for Asus laptops( )

Separately, I would like to talk about the solution to the problem on laptops from Asus that have the chip installed Via Audio. It is on such devices that the above problems most often occur. Usually the disease is accompanied by the appearance of an error 0x887c0032. The solution is this:

Let's go to " device Manager" We are interested in the whole point “ Audio outputs and inputs».

We select each line and delete it along with the drivers (of course, if the system offers this).

Let's go to " Sound devices" We do the same. We leave only HDMI. A message should appear saying “ No sound devices installed».

Go to the Internet and download Via Audio from the official Asus resource.

We set compatibility with Win 8.1 or 7. Run as administrator.

Additional options( )

Sometimes users simply forget to view additional settings in the sound menu. And it’s better not to forget about this:

Why is there no sound on Windows 7? Perhaps many Windows 7 users have experienced this problem at least once. This article contains the most common causes and ways to solve them.

The main reasons leading to loss of sound, as well as ways to solve them

Why does the sound disappear on a laptop, computer, etc.? In most cases, the reason for this is the user's own errors in handling the operating system.

So, what to do if the sound on your laptop does not work. The first step is to check the availability of the necessary drivers for your sound card. Perhaps they need updating, or you don't have them at all. By the way, driver errors are half the reasons why sound on a laptop disappears. In order to see which devices on your laptop or computer need driver updates, you need to open the device manager, which can be found in the control panel.

The manager window organizes and presents all drivers installed on a laptop, computer, etc. Using it, you can check the availability, functionality or relevance of drivers. If any item is marked with a yellow triangle, you should pay attention to it! Devices responsible for sound playback are located in the “Sound, gaming and video devices” tab.

Perhaps the most banal, but at the same time the most common reason for which the sound disappears is its unconscious turning off in the mixer. A mixer is a system that allows you to adjust the volume of specific applications. You can open the mixer by clicking on the corresponding inscription in the volume control window. After starting the mixer, make sure that all parameters are non-zero.

No less common is another reason why the sound on a laptop or desktop computer disappears. Its essence lies in the system disabling the output devices themselves. This may be due to system errors, device configuration changes, or user intervention. Fixing this problem is very easy! To do this:

Another common reason is that the service responsible for playing audio is disabled. To start it again, you need to go to Control Panel - Administration - Services. In the window that opens, find the “Windows Audio” service.

If the service is disabled, double-click on the service to open the settings window, from where you can force the service to start by clicking the “Run” button.

In this window, you should configure one more parameter – the startup type. This parameter is responsible for starting the service when Windows boots. In order not to constantly start the service manually, I advise you to define this parameter as automatic.

No sound from the front panel

What to do if there is no sound on the front panel or no sound at all? The whole problem lies in the question “Why is there no sound?”

In most cases, the front panel requires a Realtek controller to operate. If for some reason you don’t have it, be sure to reinstall it. After launching the manager from the control panel, go to the “Speakers” tab. Next, double-click the folder icon in the upper left corner and check the box next to “Disable front panel slot detection”

If, after completing the operation of displaying information on the front panel, there is still no panel, it means that the BIOS installed in your laptop or computer is most likely incorrectly configured. The BIOS system is present in any laptop, computer or tablet, and provides the operating system with API access to the hardware, including the front panel. To configure the BIOS for the front panel to work, you need to:

  1. When the system starts, namely while demonstrating the logo of the motherboard manufacturer installed on your laptop or computer, press and hold the “F2” key to exit to the BIOS menu.
  2. Then you need to find and select “Onboard Devices Configuration” in the “Advanced” tab.
  3. In the next window, you need to configure one parameter, namely “Front Panel Type”, which is responsible for the type of front panel. There are usually 2 options: HD Audio and AC97.

A somewhat complex sound subsystem is responsible for outputting sound from a computer to speakers or headphones. It is logical that there will be no sound if there is a problem at any stage along the sound path.

There are a great many sources of this problem: from a failure in Windows settings to problems with sound path devices. But before we talk about the reasons and how to fix it, let’s figure out what the computer sound system consists of.

Hardware and software

Audio card, A sound card or sound adapter is a device designed for processing audio data on a PC. Cards can be discrete (separate) or integrated, i.e. soldered onto the computer motherboard. The latter are the most common and are represented by two basic elements: an audio codec - a small microcircuit, and a host controller as part of the chipset (south bridge).

Operating system:

  • A driver that controls the operation of a sound card. If there is no driver, there will be no sound on the computer either.
  • Helper Utilities: Windows Sound and Audio Device Managers from Hardware Developers
  • System Services: Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
  • Codecs are a set of dynamic libraries necessary for playing sound files of certain formats. Some audio codecs are present in Windows natively, others are installed as needed. The absence of some codecs is manifested by the fact that individual music files will not be played on the computer, but in general the sound does not disappear. Example codecs: mp3, wma, aac, etc.

To make it easier to understand why the computer suddenly became “deaf and dumb”, let’s divide the reasons into 2 groups according to the time of occurrence:

  • there has been no sound since the purchase or installation of the system;
  • There was a sound, and then suddenly it disappeared.

If there was never a sound

In this case, the problems relate to the hardware component and driver installation.

Connecting the speakers correctly

First, make sure that the audio card is installed correctly and turned on. Look at the rear end of the system unit - the jacks for the microphone, speakers and headphones are on the motherboard or just below - if the sound card is connected as an expansion card. There are at least 2-3 such jacks (microphone input, line input and line output), and at most more than a dozen (on professional cards). On laptops there can be only one jack 3.5 socket.

In addition to the audio card, speakers or headphones can be the culprit for the lack of sound, so it is better to make sure that they are in order from the very beginning - check them on your phone, for example.

Check the speakers in each of the jacks, as the jacks may be reassigned in the Audio Device Manager settings, i.e. The sound output may not be on the green socket, but on the pink socket, for example. Let's see how their reassignment is done using the example of a utility from Realtek:

It should be noted that the ability to reassign sockets through the sound manager is not available everywhere. On those computers where it is not present, this is done by editing the registry.

Installing the sound driver

Look into Device Manager and check if the sound driver is installed. Without a driver, the sound card will be recognized as an unknown device. "Device Manager" and make sure it is there.

If you see a similar picture, but there is no audio card in the list of sound devices, this is your case. It can be found on the disk from the motherboard, and if there is no disk, download it from the website of the sound adapter manufacturer, when its model is known. If the driver is installed, you will see a similar picture:

The main audio device you have 90% of the time is the built-in Realtek High Definition Audio controller. The rest of the devices (AWEI, DL-Link and XMOS) are my external gadgets. If Realtek is displayed without question marks or exclamation marks, then the driver is available. If “Unknown device” is also present, then this is some other device.

How to find the right driver by motherboard model

It is best to use the program. If you act manually, then first you need to determine the “mother” model. One of the utilities for recognizing PC hardware will help with this, for example, free HWiNFO32\64 or CPU-Z. In HWiNFO, the necessary information is displayed in the “System Summary” window, in the “Motherboard” field.

In CPU-Z – on the “Mainboard” tab in the “Model” field

Having specified the data, we go to the manufacturer’s web resource, in my example it is Samsung. Using the search, we will find a section on the site dedicated to the device. Open the tab/page “Support” -> “Download”, go to the “Drivers” subsection, select your OS version from the list and download the sound card driver (Audio, Sound Card).

Now all that remains is to run the downloaded file and press the “Next” button during installation. When finished, you need to restart the computer. We are also looking for a driver for a laptop based on its model from the label. If the reason was in the drivers, then the sound should appear.

Incorrect sound driver loading

Sound loss sometimes occurs after incorrect installation of programs and Windows updates. The problem is solved by removing the audio card in Device Manager and then rebooting.

After selecting the “Delete” item, the system will offer to remove the drivers for this device “to the heap”; there is no need to mark it.

After restarting the PC, the sound card will appear in its place again. If it doesn’t help, then repeat the process with “uninstalling the driver program.” Also find and remove the driver installation from the standard Add or Remove Programs tool in Windows. Reboot and then install the drivers from scratch.

If you updated the driver and after that a problem appeared, then I recommend returning to the previous working version. To do this, in the device properties on the “Driver” tab, you need to click “Roll Back” and reboot.

Setting up the BIOS

Next you need to make sure that the card is not disabled. A sound-related parameter may be called: “Audio Controller”, “Azalia Audio”, “HDA Controller”, “OnChip Sound”, etc. with the words sound, audio, azalia, HDA. In different BIOS versions it is located in the “Advanced” or “Integrated Peripherals” tabs. To enable an audio device, you need to set it to Auto or Enabled.

Is the computer still “deaf and dumb”? It is possible that the sound card is simply faulty. There are many inexpensive discrete audio cards on sale with USB, PCI and PCI-E interfaces that can replace the built-in one if it fails.

There was sound before, but it disappeared

The reasons are related to incorrect actions of the user or installed programs. Also, after infection with viruses, there may be various problems, including lack of sound. The problem is created by the activity of the malicious program itself and the changes it makes to the system (modification of system files and the registry by viruses and Trojans is a common occurrence).

First, of course, you need. For this, the capabilities of an antivirus that works “normally” in the system are often sufficient. But if after treatment the sound does not appear, you will have to restore Windows.

Checking audio settings in Windows

Look at the Speaker icon in the taskbar notification area. It may be that the volume level is at zero or even turned off, i.e. crossed out. To fix this, click on the speaker and move the slider up. This sounds stupid, but nevertheless, this happens due to carelessness.

If the speaker is marked with a white cross in a red circle, you need to check whether the playback devices are disabled in Windows:

  • Launch the Sound control panel applet or select Playback Devices from the speaker context menu, i.e. by right-clicking on it.
  • If there is nothing in the Playback tab other than the message “No audio devices installed,” right-click there and check the box next to “Show disabled devices.” After this, the unused device must be turned on by selecting the appropriate command from its context menu:

Please note that the correct default audio output device must be selected. To set it, just click on it in the list and click on the “Default” button below. Try different ones. You especially need to go here to enable sound output. In addition, by clicking on the speaker marked with a cross, you can start diagnostics and auto-recovery of sound settings:

This built-in wizard also sometimes helps solve the problem.

If the sound still doesn’t appear, let’s check if audio services are disabled:

Defects in system files or registry keys

It will help to solve problems with files and the registry at once if a checkpoint was created before the sound disappeared. When there is no point or this function is disabled, you can try to fix the situation using the dism and sfc utilities.

To restore the system to working parameters, run (cmd.exe) and run two commands in turn:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

The commands take quite a long time to execute; after finishing the work you need to reboot. They check system files, and if they deviate from the original options, they are automatically restored from storage. During the recovery process, you may be asked for a Windows installation disk or flash drive.

Overclocking your computer and resetting the BIOS

Overclocking your computer can cause audio problems. If you or someone else has recently dabbled in overclocking the system bus, then you need to reduce the frequencies or reset the BIOS settings to default. To do this, you can use any of the following methods:

1. Go to BIOS Setup and on the Exit or Save & Exit tab, click Load Setup Defaults (Load Defaults BIOS, Load Safe-Fail Defaults, Load Defaults Settings, Set BIOS Default, Restore Defaults - the option names differ in different BIOS versions).

2. Find the RTC battery on the motherboard (on desktop computer boards this is a CR2032 “tablet”) and remove it from the socket for a while (15 - 30 minutes is usually enough). To speed up the reset, you can briefly short-circuit the socket terminals with the same battery.

3. Find the Clear CMOS jumper on the board (CLRTC, Clear RTC, CCMOS, etc. - again, the names are different on different boards) and briefly move it to 2 adjacent pins.

The second and third methods are performed only when the computer's power is completely disconnected from the outlet.

Why else might there be no sound?

If the jumpers on the motherboard, which are responsible for reassigning the sound output, are not installed or are positioned incorrectly, then there will be no sound! You need to carefully look at the instructions for the motherboard, the section regarding Audio, and check how the jumpers are actually positioned. In this case, the symptoms are as follows: the file is playing in the player, the volume is set correctly, but there is complete silence in the speakers.

If you are connecting to the front panel, it may simply not be connected to the board or connected incorrectly. There are two types of front panels: legacy AC’97 and HD Definition. Accordingly, if there is such a setting in the BIOS settings, then you need to select the type of your front panel (try both).

If the instructions seem too complicated or the problem was not solved, or when the situation repeats itself over and over again, the best thing to do is contact the service or write about your problem in the comments to the article.

You decided to watch a hot new movie, turned it on on your laptop, but the opening frames are completely silent? Does a Skype call make it impossible to hear the voices of the interlocutor? And it’s completely impossible to imagine a fierce comparison in an online game without sound - after all, you will instantly become a victim of all the enemies who will sneak up on you from behind with complete impunity. Of course, many of the laptop's functions remain the same in silent mode, but how annoying it is! The sound may stop working for various reasons. And most of them can be fixed at an authorized service center where Acer repairs are carried out.

As a rule, the first thought that occurs to the owner of a “numb” laptop is “something happened to the speakers or sound card.” Fortunately, this is not always the case. There are situations when you can restore the necessary settings in Acer yourself. To do this, you will need to carry out simple tests that may help you clarify the cause. Probably the simplest reason why there may be no sound is at the same time the funniest, but at the same time very popular. This happens when there are headphones in the jack. If this is really the case, then no sound will go to the speakers for quite obvious reasons. And the problem is solved as simply as it is diagnosed: just pull out the plug and everything will work.

There is one more elementary reason why the speakers may be silent - if you yourself or someone close to you accidentally lowered the volume to zero or checked the box to turn off the sound completely. It’s easy to check: look at the panel at the bottom and right of the screen, where the “Speaker and Headphones” icon is located. If it is crossed out, then click on it and select “Speaker and headphones: unmute.” All that remains is to select the desired volume level. You don’t find such an icon in your Microsoft Windows at all? It is possible that the sound card driver is not installed on your system or has stopped working. It can be reinstalled.

Finally, there may be no sound because the required codecs are not installed on your system. You can check this like this: when you load Windows, you hear a characteristic system sound, but if you start the player, it works “silently”. In this case, you should download one of the codec collections and then install it. Often after this everything starts to work.

What if the sound card driver does not start? First the problem needs to be diagnosed. In Device Manager (inside Control Panel), select “Sound, video, and game devices” and look for any signs next to the device name. If it is a down arrow, then just right-click to connect the card. And if there is a red exclamation mark, then there is a problem with the driver (or a conflict with another device). Then it needs to be updated - as a rule, it is on the license disk that was included with the purchase. You can also always download it from the manufacturer’s official website.

A more difficult situation is when the sound card is blocked in the BIOS. In order to resolve this issue, you will need to restart your laptop. Before Windows starts loading, you need to click on the button that will allow you to enter the BIOS. It could be Del, F2, F10 - which one you need to read in the hint at the bottom of the screen. Find the Advanced item in the BIOS, in it - Definition Audio - opposite it should be Enabled. If next to this item it says Disabled, then click on the arrow to turn on the sound card. All that remains is to save the correct settings and exit the BIOS. As you can see, all these situations can be resolved independently, without contacting a service center.

Of course, if something doesn’t work out, you can always consult with specialists. But it also happens when there are no software problems, but the sound does not appear. This is where you will need Acer repair, of course, at an authorized service center. There they will determine what the problem is. For example, the speakers in a laptop may stop working. Sometimes this is the fault of the user himself, who turned them on at full power, but this also happens for no apparent reason. Most likely, the reason is in the speakers, if the sound is not output to them (or there is a strong wheezing sound), but when you connect headphones or external speakers, it appears. You cannot carry out such a replacement on your own; it is a very complex operation. The service center will install new original speakers. What if the speakers work fine, but the sound is not output to the headphones? Of course, the reason could also be in the headphones themselves (this can be confirmed by reconnecting them to another device, for example, a smartphone or tablet, or another laptop). But if this is not the case, then most likely the reason is a malfunction of the connector. This can happen if you have a habit of abruptly tearing the headphone plug out of the socket or if it was unsuccessfully cleaned. In this case, you will need to measure the connector, after which everything will work normally. Of course, the worst thing is if the reason for the missing sound is problems with the sound card. Most Acer laptops have a sound card integrated into the motherboard. A problem of this degree of complexity can only be solved at a service center.

Contact "A-Service" - we have the right to an authorized Acer repair. Just a few days – and your laptop will work like before!
