Over the past two weeks, we have been actively testing various text editors for the operating system iOS, which could fully meet our requirements. Our priority was a beautiful and understandable interface, support Markdown markings, possibility fast export to HTML format, availability of a version for Mac, as well as convenient navigation within the application.

As a result, out of several dozen high-quality and low-quality applications, only three were included in this article: iA Writer, Byword, And Ulysses. All of these editors fully meet the necessary requirements, including the availability of a Mac version.

iA Writer

If you ask on a specialized forum for some text editor under Mac OS X, then most likely they will advise iA Writer. For many, this program is the embodiment of ideal minimalistic design and ease of use. The developers did not give the user the opportunity to change any parameters inside the application - everything works out of the box.

This leads to one huge minus, which for many will be critical when choosing an editor. In some cases, the font in iA Writer looks too small for the eyes, and there is no way to change it. Because of this, the strain on the eyes increases significantly, which is not very good for health.

The iA Writer text editor can be connected to Dropbox storage, bypassing synchronization via iCloud. By default, all documents are stored in iCloud Drive. For some this may seem like a plus, but not in our case. After several weeks of use, a huge mess forms in the iA Writer folder, which makes it very difficult to find the necessary material.

There is no point in switching to the extended version of iA Writer Pro, since the developers are still not added it includes support for the Russian language. For this reason, almost all the unique features of the Pro version do not work correctly.

Probably, iA Writer can be safely called the simplest and most user-friendly text editor that is not expensive, and also has synchronization via iCloud or Dropbox.

Byword

In many ways, this application for working with text is reminiscent of iA Writer, but it has a number of very significant and fundamental differences. First of all, it is necessary to note the flat design in the style of iOS 8, but for unknown reasons the developers did not bother to make the icon in a minimalist style - it does not look beautiful, to put it mildly.

IN Byword There is the ability to synchronize data via iCloud and Dropbox. The application can store documents on the flash memory of iPhone and iPad, which can be extremely useful if there is no Internet access. A unique option of the program is the ability to open files from any folder in iCloud Drive. Thanks to this, you can store documents not only in the standard Byword folder, but also in any other - this may be useful to someone.

If you open the iCloud section, all entries will be arranged in order of editing or title (customizable). Byword developers have added to their editor the ability to change the font and its size. In the settings there is also the ability to activate dark mode. Entries can be grouped into folders - this allows you to separate reviews, news, and articles from each other. To ensure navigation, this usage scheme, in our particular case, is the most convenient.

If you wish, you can purchase in Byword the ability to quickly export entries to a website managed by WordPress. It is currently the only text editor for iOS and OS X with this capability.

Ulysses

Comparing this application with Byword and iA Writer is not entirely fair yet, since the developers Ulysses have not yet released a version for iPhone, but they promise to do so soon. A full and detailed review of this text editor for iPad can be read here.

The Ulysses interface is radically different from that of iA Writer and Byword. The developers decided to move away from the usual scheme for storing files in iCloud Drive, and “robbed” users of the opportunity to fully manage their records. Surprisingly, this was only for the benefit of the entire text editor.

Due to the fact that Ulysses does not have direct access to iCloud Drive storage, navigating the program is much more convenient and simpler than products from its main competitors. All text entries can be sorted into the necessary categories, which the user can easily create independently. In our case, this played a decisive role in choosing the best text editor for the iOS platform. A search mode is also present, but due to the competent distribution of materials between the created categories, it is almost never useful in work.

The Ulysses text editor for iPad can be easily customized using built-in themes and layout. The program has support for dark design mode and the use of its own fonts, which can be easily added to the editor.

Records in Ulysses are stored securely - every few hours the program makes backups of the database so that in an emergency the necessary records can be restored from it. Similar functionality is missing in iA Writer and Byword.

Creators Ulysses They will soon release a full-fledged iPhone version of their text editor, and then they will work on the ability to publish and save posts directly to a site running WordPress.
