What is the Windows Control Panel. Launch Control Panel Items from the Command Line

Question from a user

Hello.

I recently noticed that when I right-click on START, the usual menu no longer appears: it doesn’t have a link to the command line or the control panel (which is what you need in the first place!). There is no link to it in the START menu itself either. How to open it? Maybe I caught a virus?

PS Windows 10 is installed, the latest updated version as of today (that is, on May 20, 2018).

Good day!

Yes, it looks like Windows developers want to completely abandon this classic panel over time...

But today, nevertheless, it is still quite often necessary to go into it to change many parameters and settings. In this help article I will show you several ways to open it (some of the methods are universal and work in different Windows operating systems).

How to log into the Control Panel

Method 1: universal (for Windows 7, 8, 10)

  1. Press the Win+R button combination (the “Run” window should appear in the corner of the screen);
  2. enter the command "Control" (without quotes, see screenshot below);
  3. press OK or Enter. Actually, that’s all, just 3 steps!

By the way, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that instead of the command " Control"can also be used" Control Panel" (full version).

There is also another alternative:

  1. press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Esc(or Ctrl+Alt+Del) - we need to open the task manager;
  2. then click on the "File/New Task" menu;
  3. In the "Open" line, enter the command "Control Panel" (see example below).

Method 2: Via Power Shell / Command Line (Universal)

The control panel can also be opened via . To do this, you need to enter only one command " Control" and press Enter.

By the way, as for Windows 10, in updated versions when you click on Win+X (or right-click on START) - there is no command line in the shortcut menu, but there is Power Shell. You can also use it to open the control panel.

In Power Shell, just enter the same command Control and press Enter. An example is shown below.

Method 3: Using the created desktop shortcut

Another very convenient way is to create a special one. icon on the desktop, with which you can always access the control panel in 1 click of the mouse.

To make it: right-click anywhere on the desktop, select from the menu that appears "Create -> Shortcut" (see example below).

As a result, a shortcut will appear on the desktop (as in the screenshot below) to quickly launch the control panel.

Method 4: Using Windows Search

In Windows 10, by the way, next to the START menu there is a very “smart” search bar (at least the magnifying glass icon is there in the default settings) .

So, just click on this icon (1) and enter in the search bar "panel"(2), how Windows will offer you the most appropriate option (3) - that is, in this case "Control Panel". As shown in the screenshot below.

By the way, so as not to search every time control Panel , it can be attached to sang tasks. To do this, just right-click on the open panel icon and select the function "Pin"(as shown in the screenshot below).

You can see how it will look in the end from my example. (1 click - and you are already in the Control Panel) .

I think that the proposed methods should be sufficient

Having switched to the new Windows 10 operating system, some of its settings seem unusual. For example, at first it was difficult for me, a simple user accustomed to Windows 7, to find classic control panel Windows 10. But in reality it turned out to be as simple as shelling pears.

In the article, we will look at several ways in which we can quickly get to the Windows 10 Control Panel, and also install it in the location we need.

1st method. The fastest way to enter the Windows 10 control panel is to press the Win+X hotkeys or right-click on the “Start” button. Next, select “Control Panel” from the context menu.

This way you can get to many necessary system tools: task manager, device manager, programs and components, etc.

2nd method. The most logical way to find something you don't know is on your Windows system. To find your control panel, we use the built-in search function. To do this, click on the magnifying glass icon located next to the “Start” button or press the Win + S hotkeys. Then enter the request “Control Panel” and open the application.

3rd method. Using this method, we will install the “Control Panel” icon on the desktop. So, in an empty space on the desktop, right-click and select “Personalization”. The “Settings” window will open, where we go to “Themes” and “Desktop Icon Settings”.

Ready. The classic Control Panel will appear on your desktop.

4th method. Install the “Control Panel” icon on the Start screen and on the taskbar. To do this, go to the “Start” menu and select “All applications”. Next, find the “Service-Windows” folder and left-click on it.

Right-click on the “Control Panel” application. Then select the location where the application icon will be displayed.

The name speaks for itself. Let's see what it is?

This is a tool with which basic system settings are made. Using this tool allows you to configure the parameters of elements so that working on your computer is convenient and simple. Many important system parameters can be changed or adjusted, namely, in the computer control panel.

Where is the control panel on the computer?

The standard way to open the Control Panel is through the Start button.

The main menu will open, in which on the right is the control panel icon.

Exists two ways, with which you can display its appearance:

Classical (see screenshot)

The second way, more modern:

I prefer the classic view, as it presents all the controls at once.

Each control element (applet) has its own icon (image) with a corresponding caption. The choice of what appearance your control panel will have, Classic or Category View, is up to you.

You can switch from one method to another using the button on the left.

You can also find the Computer Control Panel using the command line, which is also located in the main menu, on the right, in the form of the Run command. The search window or otherwise called the command line of the main menu will open. By entering the words control or control.exe, you will also be taken to the control panel.

Let's consider the classic version of the appearance of the control panel.

Sooner or later, each of us will be faced with the need to configure the operating system, with some of its controls, with setting the parameters of the elements we need. Windows XP has a large set of computer management tools. And if you don’t have the knowledge, then not all components of the operating system need to be configured yourself. Preliminarily study the material on the issue you need.

The classic view of the control panel looks like this (see first screenshot):

— Printers and faxes

- Internet Options

— Folder properties

— Network connections

- System

— Automatic update

— Administration

- Windows Firewall

— Date and time

— Sounds and audio devices

- Keyboard

— Network setup wizard

— Taskbar and Start menu

Region and Language

By clicking on the icon of the element you need, you will be taken to a dialog box in which settings are made. Before setting up this element, carefully read all the tabs in this window. Read, determine the need for this setting, check how this setting works, and only then click the “Apply” and “OK” buttons.

Pay attention to the element Here a list of programs installed on your computer will open. And new installed programs are registered here.

Attention: Programs are being removed only through the element: “Add and remove programs”.

Let's consider the appearance option by category.

To do this, in the panel on the left (see the first two screenshots), click the mouse button to switch to View by Category. A list of 10 categories opens. Each category contains elements with a specific purpose. The essence and content of the elements in these categories is the same as in the Classical method. There is no need to be afraid. It’s just that the category view looks more modern, more compact and more pleasing to the eye, so to speak.

— in it you can make settings for the screen, taskbar and Start menu; configure folder properties; Adjust video control panel settings. To quickly follow links to other elements, you can go to the panel on the left.

— here you can see which printers and faxes are installed; you can adjust and view the properties of the keyboard and mouse; view and adjust telephony access services; configure gaming device settings; install a scanner or digital camera by clicking on the “Scanners and Cameras” icon.

— here are the network settings and Internet connections. You can configure the level of security on the network; connect remote access, configure it for use on the network using “Run the Network Setup Wizard”; configure and change Windows XP firewall settings.

- this component manages the installation and proper removal of installed programs on the computer.

Date, time and regional settings

Sound, speech and audio devices

— launching the “Accessibility Wizard” will help people with disabilities configure their computer.

- a category with great capabilities, which includes administration tools and system configuration. Here you can defragment the disk, backup files, archive and restore the “Wizard for Backing up and Restoring Data on a Computer”, get information about the computer hardware, memory, network parameters, view event logs, and configure the computer’s power management settings.

In the left panel, in the See also: System Restore section - in the event of a system failure, this item will restore operation using restore points.

— in this category you configure security and access computer protection settings for the following security components: firewall, automatic updates, antivirus program. To move from one category to another, do not forget to click the green button at the top left with an arrow and the words “Back”.

There are also elements on the control panel that do not belong to the category currently being considered. Therefore, after you have familiarized yourself with a certain type of category, look at the list of elements in the left panel in the section: See also.

This concludes our review of the control panel. Have a nice meeting.

The topic of this lesson will be the control panel of Windows 7, XP and Vista. From the name it is already clear, what is control panel is a panel with which you can control the system.

We'll look at some basic control panel elements. You will probably never even need most of them, but you will use a couple of them regularly. Well, about the rest, it just doesn’t hurt to know where they are and what they are needed for.

Where is the Windows 7 control panel and how to open it?

I’ll say right away that I will show everything using the Windows 7 operating system as an example, but in XP and Vista, everything is the same.

Let's first consider where is the control panel located.

If you have Windows 7 control panel not working, then right-click on the Taskbar and select Properties.

Select Start Menu, then Customize.

A new window will appear. Scroll through the list and find the Control Panel item, put a dot next to the line Display as link.

Click OK and OK again. The Control Panel setup is complete and should now appear in the Start menu.

Detailed analysis of control panel elements.

Now open the panel itself. It should be noted that the design of the Control Panel in different versions of Windows is slightly different, but, in principle, the Windows XP Control Panel can be easily configured in the same way as the Windows 7 Control Panel, you just need to be careful and find the appropriate item.

So, for convenience, switch the control panel to classic view so that all items are displayed as icons, and not by category. This can be done by clicking on the corresponding inscription: it can be located either on top or on the side.

Now computer control panel should look like this.

As you can see, there are quite a lot of icons with which you can configure the system, but we will only look at a few.

  • Firstly, because the average user only has to use a few of these icons,
  • And secondly, because all the default settings are configured as they should be, and it’s better not to change anything, otherwise it can only cause harm.

Let's open the tab first .

Here we list the actions that the computer will do when inserting a disk or flash drive, depending on their contents. Most items are set to or Ask every time.

I advise you to leave everything as is.

Now let's look at such an important element as Firewall Window s.

It protects your computer from malware and hacking attempts. If you do not have it installed, then it is advisable to enable the Firewall. If an antivirus is installed, then it is better not to enable the Firewall, because then various inconveniences are possible, for example, the Firewall will slow down the system or prevent you from accessing the Internet.

Date and time. Actually, here you can adjust the date and time if they are set incorrectly.

device Manager.

A very important tab that lists . Here you can disconnect and connect devices, but most likely you will not need it, and therefore it is better not to change anything here.

Here you can configure the appropriate equipment, but it’s better not to touch anything at all, everything is configured by default and quite well.

Taskbar and Start menu.

We have already opened this window by right-clicking on the taskbar and selecting Properties. You can find out more about the settings of this window in my first video course in.

This is perhaps the most commonly used tab in the Control Panel. Here you can, and the best way to do this is using this tab. The fact is that when installing programs, they are installed into the system itself, and if you delete them manually, as we do with pictures or video files, then “fragments” of programs or games will remain in the system. And programs from this tab are completely removed. To do this, select the desired program or game by clicking on it once and click Remove.

System updates that come from the Internet are displayed here. Important updates, as a rule, are installed automatically, and you can install optional ones at your discretion.

They are nothing significant, so you don’t have to install them; more disk space will remain.

This tab contains all the fonts that are used by various programs, mainly text editors. Fonts can be downloaded and added, and I discussed how to do this in this lesson -

There are several modes that regulate the level of performance and power consumption. If you use your computer a little and only for accessing the Internet, checking messages and the like, then you can select Ultra-low power or Energy saving. If you often work in powerful programs, for example, in Photoshop or in, then it is better to set High performance here. If you have a little bit of everything, then choose Balanced mode. So the performance will be good, and the power consumption will not be too high.

Here you can configure the language, but everything is already configured. Unless you need to add a language for the keyboard, for example, to type in French, this is done in this tab.

So we got acquainted with the basic elements, and learned how to set up control panel. You can customize a lot with it, but be careful and don't change anything if you're not sure. Good luck in your further acquaintance with the computer.

P.S. If you don’t understand something, you can watch the video lesson.
