Where to start? Probably from the answer to this question: "I want a mail program that will have a Russian interface, work correctly with different encodings, provide secure correspondence and make sure I write correctly and…! By the way, I have more than one mailbox! It should work with everyone at the same time! What should I choose?"

Personally, we chose The Bat!

In principle, all of the above in one way or another is in any mail program, but here is the whole list of advantages "in one bottle" - a feature of The Bat!. This program, in many ways, is far ahead of its competitors, such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, Pegasus and Becky. Let's substantiate this statement. The Bat! features:

  • A flexible system of settings that allows you to "adjust" the program to the needs of each specific user, taking into account his smallest wishes;
  • An advanced system of templates that helps to minimize the procedure for writing responses to letters;
  • The most advanced built-in information protection and encryption system in special versions programs - SecureBat! and AuthenticBat!;

Done with the pluses. But what about the cons? There are, unfortunately, and they... The Bat! does not have the ability to work with news servers (newsgroups), as it does not support the NNTP protocol. An unfortunate flaw, but the developers promised to provide this feature in new version programs - The Bat! 2.x.

Training

So, now we know in general terms what The Bat! is, and why we need it. But before you install the program and start working, you need to get yourself an email address and set up a mailbox. However, you need to know following parameters(for example, take a hypothetical mailing address on mail.ru server):

  1. Your e-mail address;
  2. Name and password required for authorization on the mail server;
    • name: vasya
    • password: 123456
  3. Addresses of the POP3 server (for receiving mail) and SMTP server (for sending mail).
    • POP3 server: pop.mail.ru
    • SMTP server: smtp.mail.ru

If you have all these data, you are ready to start working with e-mail. It remains only to find the distribution kit of The Bat! program itself, that is, the original installation kit. The easiest option is to get it from the website of the developers of the program, Ritlabs, which is located at the following address: .

Main page Ritlabs website

Further. Select from the list The Bat! and go to the section dedicated directly to the mail client itself. In this section select the menu Download. As a result of these manipulations, you get to the main download page, from which you can always download the most latest version programs. In addition, you can always find a list of changes made to the latest version of the program, as well as additional files, such as: language module, PGP plugin and help files.

Download List

The distribution kit consists of one file the_bat.exe(today its size is almost 2.5 MB). We also recommend that you immediately download the language module ( intpack.exe- 3.2 MB). Below we provide a few direct links where you can always download the latest official version programs:

While the download process is in progress, here, on the developers' website, you can read the description of the program or read reviews about The Bat! sent by other users. For Russian-speaking visitors, the Russian version of the Ritlabs website is open, located at .

Installation

Well, finally the files have been downloaded and everything is ready for installation. The whole process of installing the program goes to English language(it is not yet possible to select a language during installation). After installation, the program interface will also be in English. How to make it Russian, we will tell a little later.

Window with the history of the program development

Next, the installer will ask where you would like to install The Bat!. By default, as is customary in almost all installers, it prompts you to select the directory that is provided in Windows for installation. program files. We recommend that you do not change anything here and leave the path selected by the installer. If for some reason you need to change the default settings, click the button change and select the directory you need.

Window for selecting a directory for installing the program

After you click on the button Install, will begin automatic installation programs to the selected folder, and upon completion of the installation, the process automatically starts initial setup The Bat!

First, you will see a window for selecting the main mode of operation.

Mode selection window The works Bat!

Here you need to choose one of three modes in which The Bat! can work:

  1. Workstation with TCP/IP. In this version of The Bat! installed on local computer as the main program for working with e-mail;
  2. Server mode. This mode is set when computers in the local network do not have access to the Internet, or local server POP3/SMTP. In this case, The Bat! can play the role of a mail server for your local network!;
  3. client mode. In this case, The Bat! installed as a client for a mail server based on The Bat! However, it does not work either with the Internet or with a regular local mail server.

More detailed information the last two options for work can be found on the NoBat.RU website,. If you do not have a server based on The Bat!, and you are not going to organize it, feel free to choose the first option and go to the next window.

Window for selecting a mail directory and creating shortcuts

In the window that opens, the program will prompt you to select the name and location of the mail directory (the directory in which your letters and configuration files will be located) on the PC disk, the shortcut The Bat! on the menu Start(Start), and set the following three parameters:

File extension registration window

Everything! Intermediate finish. FROM general settings finished. Let's move on to creating your first account. It is here that you will have to use the data received on the mail.ru server.
The following window will appear in front of you.

Account creation mode selection window

Here you are asked to choose one of the options for creating a mail account:

  1. Create a new account;
  2. Restoring data from an existing archive.

Choose " new box and move on to the next window.

New account window

Here you have to enter the name of the mailbox and indicate its location on the disk. Without special need, we advise you not to change the parameter ("default") and leave everything as it is. Set the name of the box, for example, "Main box" (this name can be changed at any time) and proceed to the next step.

Personal data entry window

In this window, you must enter your name, which will be substituted in outgoing letters in the "From:" (From:) field, your email address and the name of the organization. If you correspond with people from other countries, then it is advisable to fill in these fields with Latin letters. Note that during installation you specify only one email address. However, The Bat! can work with an unlimited number of mailboxes. We will return to setting them up later.

Window for entering POP3 and SMTP server addresses

After you fill in the mail server addresses, the installer asks for a username and password to access the mailbox. The login is usually the email address itself (most often without a domain name). In our example, the login is "vasya". When you enter the password, it will be displayed on the screen with asterisks (*) - this typical reception serves to ensure security so that outsiders cannot recognize it and gain access to your mail.

Login and password entry window for access to the mailbox

Below the login and password, there are two checkboxes that allow you to select the following options:

  1. Use encryption when transmitting password (APOP);
  2. Leave copies of messages on the server.

When using APOP, your mailbox password is not sent to open form, but encrypted. However, to use this method passing the password, you need to be sure that it is supported by your mail server. Therefore, contact the support service and clarify the possibility of providing such a service.

If you want to receive the same mail on more than one computer, check the second checkbox. Your correspondence will remain on the server. Just remember that most servers have limits on the total size of the mailbox (usually from 2 to 5 MB).

WWW connection method selection window

The first option is to connect manually or through local network. The second option is Dial-Up, which you can set up at the same time.

Finally, the mailbox is created and the installer prompts you to view or change some Extra options. We recommend that you skip this step for now (select the radio button no) and go directly to work with The Bat!

Installation Completion Window

First start

So, the installation is finished, and the program is launched for the first time. The first window that you will see when you start The Bat! looks like this.

Choosing a default email client

The Bat! informs you that this moment it is not the default mail program (called by your OS by default when working with mail) and suggests fixing it. Here you are also invited to disable this check for the future, but you should not do this. Pushing a button Yes, you make The Bat! mail client by default and finally get into the main window of the program.

The main window of The Bat!

The first thing you involuntarily pay attention to is a black information bar running at the top of the program window - a kind of scoreboard informing the user about the incoming correspondence. This Mail ticker ™ is one of the highlights of The Bat!

By default, this panel shows the contents of the fields From: ("Sender"), To: ("Recipient") and Subject: ("Subject of the letter"), however, you can freely change the size and location of the Mail Ticker ™ on the screen, as well as in general remove it. To do this, go to the "Properties - Settings" menu, and on the "Basic" tab (Options - Preferences - General) change the value of the parameter "Show Mail ticker ™" (Display Mail ticker ™).

Russification

So, the first launch of the program was successful, but The Bat!, as you probably already noticed, has an English interface. It's not fatal, but still annoying. How to Russify it?

To carry out Russification, you should again look at the program website in the section and download a special language module (International Pack - intpack.exe- 3.2 MB). Those of you who took our advice and downloaded it along with the program itself can skip this step. For the rest, we provide direct links to the file you are looking for.

The Bat! language module required to install the Russian interface. Also, it contains the translation of the program interface into the following languages: Bulgarian, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, German, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish, Ukrainian, French and Czech. In addition, it includes grammar dictionaries for English (UK and US), Dutch, French, German and Italian. You do not need to download and install the language module every time you install new versions of The Bat! over the existing one on your PC.

Before the Russification of The Bat! get out of it. By running the file intpack.exe, you will see start window language module installer.

Language module installation window

We install the language module and therefore boldly press the button Setup. In the next window, the installer will automatically detect and indicate the location where The Bat! is installed on your PC, and prompt you to check a number of checkboxes.

Language Pack Installation Window

The "Install Multilingual Interface" checkbox must be checked. For the sake of it, we actually install the language module. Also, you can check one or more checkboxes from the bottom block, thereby choosing the installation of modules for checking the spelling of their respective languages. By default, spell checking is set to US English only. Once you have selected all the required options, click OK and go to the next window.

Warning window before installation

Finally, the installer will remind you that The Bat! should not be running at the moment. Clicking on the next OK will start the installation procedure. If everything went well, you will see a window with the appropriate message, and after pressing (this time, the last) button OK happen automatic start The Bat!

Language module installed

To switch the interface of The Bat! into Russian, go to the menu "Properties - Language" (Options - Language) and select the item "Russian" (Russian). Now the program will be able to please you with messages in Russian.

Choosing the interface language for The Bat!

As a result of these simple operations, in The Bat!, in addition to Russian interface, there is also the possibility of checking the spelling of letters, but, unfortunately, only in those languages that you selected during installation. Unfortunately, because the Russian spellchecker is not yet included in the language module. :-(What to do if you need to check the spelling of the Russian language?

We solve the issue. Users who have versions installed Microsoft office 95, 97, or 2000 with spell check, no worries at all. Implemented in Bat! CSAPI (Spell API) will find required libraries. All that the user needs to do is to select the Russian language in the Spell Checker - Language menu of the letter editor.

Selecting a language for spell checking

What about Microsoft Office XP? Why is it not on the list above?

The fact is that in this product, Microsoft has changed the mechanism for accessing libraries responsible for spell checking. Office XP users will have to go the other way. They should download and install the Spell Checker module text editor CryptEdit by PolySoft Solutions. Find file spellset.exe(1.13 MB) you can either .

Installing the Spell Checker from Crypt Edit

After completing the installation of Crypt Edit Spell Checker, you should restart your mail client and perform the actions described above - launch the letter editor and select the required language in the "Spell Checker - Language" menu.

In conclusion of this chapter, it should be noted that at present the program can only check the spelling of letters in one of the selected languages. However, the developers promised to teach The Bat! check the text against two dictionaries at once already in the upcoming version 2.0.

registration

After the first launch of the program, you will see the following message.

Reminder window that The Bat! not registered

This means only one thing - you are using an unregistered version of The Bat!, and this window is a polite reminder of limited time(30 days) free use a full-fledged commercial version of the program (remember the license agreement).

How and where can I register The Bat!?

Ritlabs currently has the following recommended prices for a single copy of The Bat! on the territory of the former CIS:

  • $15 - Student (student);
  • $20 - For individuals;
  • 30 c.u. - A commercial.

In Russia, The Bat! can be registered through the Softkey service.

Address books and archives

Currently, there are quite a few different email clients. Their main role is to work with e-mail, but they are all very different from each other and appearance, and size, and capabilities. If you have already used any of the mail programs and have experience with e-mail, then when you switch to work with The Bat! you will probably take care of the following question: "How can I - and can I at all - convert existing mailboxes and address books to The Bat!?"

Do not worry. To ensure compatibility with other email clients in The Bat! There is an "Import Wizard". You can get to it through the program menu "Tools - Import Messages" (Tools - Import Messages) and select the import method.

Mail Import Wizard

It will be enough for you to answer the questions of the "Wizard" and indicate which folders old program must match The Bat! folders. As a result of these manipulations, you will receive in The Bat! a complete, including folder structure, copy of your old mailbox.

Well, you have imported letters, now let's move on to importing the "Address Book". The Bat! currently supports data import from the following formats: vCard, ldif, text format, Eudora/Pegasus address books. Thus, if you have previously used these email programs or your old program has export to one of these formats, then you can easily transfer your old address book to The Bat!. To do this, use one of the options of the import function - "Tools - Address Book - File - Import From".

Importing Address Books

As an example, consider importing information into the address book of The Bat! from text file, where the data is separated by commas. When this file is opened in Microsoft Excel it will look like this.

*.cvs file opened in Excel

Now let's import given file to The Bat! address book. When importing, you need to tell the program the correspondence between the fields of the imported file and address book The Bat!

Window when importing to the Address Book

And what about users of Microsoft products? To convert Windows Address Book (WAB) to ldif format, RitLabs has released a special utility Wab2Ldif.exe(188 KB). You can find it at:

WAB to ldif converter (Wab2Ldif.exe)

There is also another, very simple option for transferring information from the WAB address book to The Bat! address book. To carry out the transfer, open both address books and simply drag and drop the addresses you need with the mouse. :-)

So, all the manipulations for transferring mail databases and address books from your old program are completed, and now you are ready to use The Bat! almost to its full potential.

This concludes the first, mostly introductory part of the article about The Bat! We hope that this publication will be helpful and help you make the "right" choice.

Check item "My SMTP server requires authorization."
Click the button "Next".

Step #7. In the mailbox properties window that opens, go to the "Transport" section. In case your Internet provider blocks any ports, in the tab "Transport" you can use alternative.
The following ports are available for connecting to the mail server:

  • IMAP: encrypted SSL connection- 993, no encryption - 143
  • SMTP: SSL encrypted connection - 465, no encryption - 587

Step #8 In the window that opens, select "SMTP Authentication (RFC-2554)" And "Use Mail Retrieval Options (POP3/IMAP)". To apply the changes, click the button "OK".

Congratulations! Your mail is set.

According to Zecurion statistics, 78% of personal and corporate information takes place via email. To counteract cyber threats, in addition to increasing control on the part of the client (dual identification, linking to the phone), security measures are being strengthened in mail clients and programs. One of these software, which put the protection of user information at the forefront, is The bat!.

The bat! - what it is

This software from the Moldovan IT company Ritlabc. The application is specialized in collecting, storing and sorting e-mail. It can work with an unlimited number of mailboxes and handle an infinite number of letters and files. Credo The bat! - not only the convenience and speed of working with letters, but also the safety of the user. The program is paid, designed for private and corporate clients.

Confidentiality is achieved by encrypting data on the hard drive of the client's computer and traffic, a separate address book, in case of data destruction, etc.

Almost everyone can work with the program, including Yandex. Mail. Setting up the bat! for the most popular in Russia search engine will be discussed in this article.

Setting up the bat! for "Yandex" via POP3 protocol

POP3- mail protocol, which allows you to download all files from an email inbox at a time. Implemented through port 110.

In practice, this means the following: in order to view an email with an attachment, the program will first download it to special folder on the hard drive of the client's machine. On server postal service he is removed. The advantage of the POP3 system can be considered a quick response and the ability to work with letters offline. The disadvantage is that attachment files are stored in the computer's memory, which means they can be damaged or lost.

Setting up the bat! for Yandex via POP3 step by step:

    In the "Box" tab, select the "New" item.

    We come up with a name for the box, for example, "Worker".

    The user's full name will be in the signature (for example, "Aleksey Petrov") and the address on Yandex ( [email protected]).

    To access the server, select Post Office Protocol - POP3. The server for receiving mail will be pop.yandex.ru, for SMTR - smtr.yandex.ru.

    Check if the checkboxes next to Secure connection are checked ( secure connection) and "My server requires authentication".

    We indicate (before the “@” sign, in our example it is “alex.petrov”) and the password for the mailbox. A checkmark next to "Leave emails on the server" means that attachments are not deleted after being downloaded to the user's hard drive.

    Specify the connection method as a local network or a manual connection.

As you can see, everything is very simple. Creating a mailbox takes a few minutes, as does setting up The bat!. Yandex.ru contains more detailed instructions for advanced users.

Setting the correct mailbox properties

Right-click on the name of the mailbox. Select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

In the "Transport" menu, mail is sent through the SMTR server: smtr.yandex.ru, port 465. Receipt is done through pop.yandex.ru, port 995. Everywhere a secure connection is made through the TLS port.

We check the settings of the server for sending mail by clicking the "Authentication" button. SMTR authentication must be active and set to "Use POP3/Imap retrieval options".

Setting up the bat! for Yandex by imap

Mail imap protocol— more modern development, which appeared along with cloud technologies. Implemented through port 143.

Imap loads the list of files first, then selectively the files themselves. In practice, the user sees the letter, its subject, the size of the attachment, the beginning of the letter. To work with specific file The bat! downloads a letter from the server. Attachments remain there and are additionally stored on the local drive.

Imap allows you to work with letters in offline and online modes directly on the server with information saved.

Setting up the bat! for Yandex via imap:

It is one of the fastest, safest and functional programs to work with electronic correspondence. This product supports absolutely any email services, including the one from Yandex. It's about how to configure The Bat! for full-fledged work we will tell in this article.

Editing The Bat! At first glance, this may not seem like an easy task. In reality, everything is very elementary. The only three things you need to know to get started with postal service Yandex in the program - an email address, a corresponding password and a protocol for accessing mail.

Defining the mail protocol

By default, the Yandex email service is configured to work with a protocol for accessing e-mail called IMAP (English Internet Message Access Protocol).

We will not delve into the topic of mail protocols. We only note that the developers of Yandex.Mail recommend using this particular technology, because it has more wide opportunities for working with electronic correspondence, and also loads your Internet channel less.

To check which protocol is currently in use, you will have to use the Yandex.Mail web interface.

Now we can safely proceed to the direct configuration of our mail program.

Setting up the client

When you launch The Bat! for the first time, you will immediately see a window for adding a new account to the program. Accordingly, if no accounts have yet been created in this mail client, you can skip the first of the steps described below.

  1. So let's move on to The Bat! and in tab "Box" select item "New Mailbox".

  2. In a new window, fill in a number of fields for authorizing an email account in the program.

    The first one is "Your name"— recipients will see in the field "From whom". Here you can enter your first and last name, or do something more practical.

    If in The Bat! If you work with not one, but several mailboxes, it will be more convenient to name them according to the corresponding email addresses. This will allow you not to get confused at all in the sent and received electronic correspondence.

    The following field names « Email address» And "Password", speak for themselves. We enter our email address on Yandex.Mail and a password for it. After that just click "Ready". That's it, the account has been added to the client!

    However, if we specify mail with a domain other than "*@yandex.ru", *@yandex.com" or "*@yandex.com.tr", you will have to configure a few more parameters.

  3. On the next tab, we define access parameters for The Bat! to the processing server emails Yandex.

    Here in the first block the checkbox should be checked "IMAP - Internet Mail Access Protocol v4". The corresponding parameter was already selected by us earlier - in the web version of the service from Yandex.

    Field "Server Address" should contain a line like:

    imap.yandex.our_first_level_domain (be it .kz, .ua, .by, etc.)

    Well, the points "Compound" And "Port" should be displayed as "Safe on special. port (TLS)" And "993", respectively.

  4. Here we fill in the field for the SMTP address according to the model:

    smtp.yandex.our_first_level_domain

    "Compound" again defined as "TLS", and here "Port" already different - "465". Also check the checkbox "My SMTP server requires authentication" and click on the button "Further".

  5. well and last section settings can not be touched at all.

    We already indicated our name at the beginning of the process of adding an “account”, and "Box name" for convenience, it is better to leave it in its original form.

    So let's press "Ready" and wait for the end of mail client authentication on the Yandex server. The successful completion of the operation will be reported to us by the mailbox work log field located at the bottom.

    If the phrase appears in the log "LOGIN completed", means setting up Yandex.Mail in The Bat! completed and we can fully use the box with the help of the client.
