How to find out what generation of iPod touch. Remembering the first iPod touch

To date, Apple has released six generations of iPod touch. Unlike, Apple does not come up with separate brands for the iPod touch, so the name of the player is usually only added to indicate its generation, for example, iPod touch 3G is the third generation of the player, and this has nothing to do with support for 3G communications, because iPod touch have never been equipped with cellular modems.

The first generation of iPod touch is easily recognizable by the characteristic rectangular shape of the plastic insert for the Wi-Fi antenna - it is located in the upper left corner of the back.

Compared to the first generation, the player has a more streamlined shape (this is noticeable if you look at the player in profile), and the rectangular antenna insert has been replaced with an oval one. However, please note that the iPod touch 3G looks exactly the same.

In terms of jailbreak capabilities, the iPod touch 2G is divided into two varieties: the “regular” model and the “MC model.” MC models are equipped with a different hardware bootloader, so they are not susceptible to many popular jailbreak methods. To distinguish the MC model, you need to look at the device article number. As a rule, the article number is indicated on the store price tag, but it is much more reliable to find out the article number on the player itself. Go to the menu "Settings-General-About this device" and look in the "Model" field. If the first two characters of the article code are MC, then you are dealing with an updated model.

The only way to tell the difference between an iPod touch 2G is to look at the model code engraved in small print on the bottom of the back of the device. The iPod touch 2G has a model code of "A1288", the iPod touch 3G has a model code of "A1318".

Got an updated design. The player became even thinner, and subsequently began to be produced in two front panel colors (white and black). But the main difference between the iPod touch 4G and its predecessors is the presence of two cameras, both front and rear. Another important difference can be noticed if you turn on the gadget: it is equipped with a Retina display with a resolution of 640x960 pixels.

Fundamentally different from all other iPod touches. It is available in different body colors (yellow, blue, pink, gray, etc.) and is the thinnest of all Apple players. In addition, the player is equipped with a 4-inch display, so it is taller than other iPod touches. Also, instead of a 30-pin connector, the player is equipped with a new small Lightning port, and the rear camera protrudes slightly from the body.

It appeared in the summer of 2015, completely unexpectedly - many predicted that the iPod touch 5G would become the last generation of the player, and Apple would no longer release anything new in the iPod line. However, 6G turned out to be a significant upgrade. Inside, it features a powerful 64-bit Apple A8 processor, an excellent 8-megapixel camera, and (a first for any Apple device) Bluetooth 4.1 chip. Externally, the body of the iPod touch 6G differs little from its predecessor, except that the Loop strap mount has disappeared. But the colors of the iPod line have changed and have become universal for all models - dark gray, silver, gold, blue, pink and red body colors are available to customers.

Why is there news in such a minor tone again? It’s as if we were seeing off this, as they said above, “alien device” and “premium class Mercedes” :)

My acquaintance with Apple (personal, not correspondence) also began with Tach. The task was to choose a new player; before that, I had been looking at the Classic for a year. But even the 80GB model, being very thin at that time – about 11 mm, if I’m not mistaken – instantly faded into the background after getting acquainted with the indecently thin touchscreen. And once you tried kinetic scrolling, feeling the interface’s pliability to your every touch, other options were simply not considered. In addition, the combination of glass and polished metal (yes, so reviled, but apparently there is some sacred meaning in this polishing), which made us treat the technological gadget also as a jewelry toy, for example, a Swiss watch. Plus the Internet, plus an organizer, plus... But enough is enough :) But even then we didn’t know about the software that would pour into these devices! I hope my attitude towards the wheelbarrow is clear.

But... everything would be fine, if not the memory. 8 and 16 GB did not suit me at the time of release. I want it, I can afford it – but there’s no point in taking a device if the whole collection doesn’t fit (yes, that’s me :)). And even the 32GB model that came out soon, half a year later, was not satisfactory - 64GB and that’s it! That’s why the second generation passed me by without forcing me to part with the contents of my wallet. I had to wait another year, and here is the 3rd touch! Maybe you remember how much noise there was on the forums: they increased the memory - and that’s basically it??? And for me, this was the most important, relevant upgrade of characteristics, because... only this characteristic transferred the long-awaited device from the category of objects of desire to the first and only candidate for purchase. The only one, because and I still can’t immediately name another flash player that has standard (i.e., in a single block, and not expandable through cards) memory. That's how the 3rd touch became my player.

It’s strange to hear skeptics doubt that there will be no more wheelbarrows. Doesn’t the fact that this is an iOS device, in which Apple is vitally interested in expanding the base and proudly announces the number of devices delivered to the market, say anything? Doesn’t anyone listen to music anymore and players aren’t needed at all anymore? I don’t think so... And an iPhone may not be suitable for everyone, but a combination of a dialer and a Touch is easy.

There are reserves for growth, I have no doubt about it. The simplest thing is to play with the colors; photos of the white front panels seem to be circulating already. What else? We increase the volume to 128GB, do you think this is a lot? Remember the “weight” of current applications, many easily reach 0.5 - 1 GB. Next, you can finally build in a radio, there will be one more feature. And I would also install a second speaker for better voiceover of applications. Don't remember disassembling last year's model on iFixit? The power button moved to the opposite edge of the upper end, freeing up space for the symmetrical placement of the second speaker to the first one on the lower end. And the photo from iFixit just demonstrated that in this very place there is now a plastic white plug, the so-called. space-saver. And also the resolution and quality of the cameras, battery power, screen size (if they increase it in the iPhone, then why not do the same in the wheelbarrow)? In short, there are a lot of reserves for growth and development, and these are just trivial thoughts that lie on the surface.

The tablet market is developing, so why shouldn’t this mini-tablet, computer, PDA continue to exist? And - I repeat, this is important for me - a player?

@Sla337 , +100500)
It always seemed strange to people screaming about the uselessness of an iPod, given the presence of an iPhone on the market. I use both at the same time. Much more convenient than listening to music from your phone.

@Sla337, WHY THE FUCK do you need 64 gigs for music? I don't understand this!

@XOsman, you also can’t understand the owners of the Classic, who already had 80GB and I don’t remember how many years ago? Who then bought 120, 160 gigabyte models and would like to have even more capacious ones?

I have already explained 10 times on different forums, including on this site, that the beauty of having the entire collection with you is that you decide what you will listen to not at the moment you connect to the computer, but directly at the moment when this desire arises . I’ve read it so many times: “8GB is enough for me, I upload everything I love there and go ahead. And you’ll never listen to 64GB again.” Yeah, that’s exactly why you won’t listen to your collection for this very reason, that the same thing is constantly uploaded, and the archive “gathers dust” on your PC for years. If it weren’t for the large amount of memory on the player, I would never have forced myself to download the entire discography of Led Zeppelin and Kraftwerk, Chris Isaac and the Beatles, DDT and Kino into it. If only you knew how many unexpected discoveries you make when, on the road, by chance or simply at random, you choose an album you’ve never listened to and suddenly find a highlight, and sometimes even a diamond and a previously unknown artist becomes a new favorite and favorite of the playlist for months to come. I don’t argue, in theory this can be done on a computer, but I listen to music mostly on the go, on the road, on my feet, and not sitting at home in a chair. Although this also happens :)

Let me clarify one more thing: I never download individual tracks, only entire albums with fully written tags, covers, and often with lyrics (i.e., texts). And I view the Touch as a player, although the functions of a handheld and a mobile gaming platform are also in demand.

So now for me there is only one intrigue: what to choose from the expected new products - a 128GB Touch or a 64GB iPhone;)

In 2007, the whole world was gripped by an urgent desire to purchase a new phone from Apple, so the first generation of the iPod touch music player became in appearance a smaller copy of the iPhone with dimensions of 110x61.8x7.3 mm.

Without a radio transmitting module and GPS, it could not be a means of communication, although it could well be positioned as a PDA thanks to its electronic content. But the company's sales department noticed in time that they were already starting to go out of fashion, so a smart marketing decision was made to present the new product as a player.

This is a kind of super player controlled by a microprocessor and with built-in memory of 8, 16 and even 32 GB. Its front part is made of black plastic, covered with impact-resistant glass, and the back is made of metal, which appealed to energetic young people. In addition, the light weight of 101 grams is completely unnoticeable in a shirt or jeans pocket.

Review of the second generation device – 2G

In 2008, the iPod Touch is “dressed” in a new stainless steel case, which is shaped like the iPhone 3G. For greater similarity, volume buttons and a built-in speaker are added, so now owners have the opportunity to listen to music without connecting headphones.

Thanks to the improved battery, music listening time has increased from 24 to 36 hours, and video viewing from 5 to 6 hours. Depending on the models, memory with a capacity of 8, 16 or 32 GB was built into the player, which fully satisfied the needs of consumers. Despite noticeable improvements, the weight of the product has increased to only 115 grams.

Starting with this generation, Nike+ support was added to the iPod Touch, with which it became possible to jog under the supervision of a “personal trainer.” Receiving signals from a sensor built into the shoes, the player counts the distance traveled and calories burned, which it reports in a pleasant voice and plays music during pauses.

Third generation iPod Touch (3G)

In 2009, they did not change the case, but they took the hardware seriously. The model with 8 GB of memory on board remained virtually unchanged, with the exception of the updated iOS bootloader – BootLoader.

iPod Touch 3G models (32, 64 GB) began to install a new ARM Cortex A8 processor with a clock frequency of 600 MHz and an additional PowerVR SGX535 graphics accelerator chip. This immediately improved the quality of video playback and made it possible to run more modern games. Increasing the amount of RAM to 256 MB gave a sharp increase in player performance by 50%.

The device has a 3.5-inch touch screen with a resolution of 480x320 pixels, which is the best in this device segment. Older models (32, 64 GB) began to support OpenGL ES Version 2.0, which greatly delighted gamers and active surfers. Now it has become much more convenient to surf the Internet using the built-in Safari browser. We were also pleased with the slight increase in battery capacity, because the new filling requires more energy resources.

2010 was a defining year for the iPod Touch line of players. The devices have received many improvements and are rightfully considered the best in their segment. If earlier they were perceived as a stripped-down iPhone, now they are very close to it.

The player has become so thin that if you put two iPod Touches of the 4th generation together, they will be as thick as a compact iPhone 4. Moreover, they have the same high-resolution Retina Display screens with a resolution of 960x640 px. In a very clear image, the pixels are completely invisible, so you can safely raise the brightness to maximum. The brightness reserve is quite noticeable, and the use of automatic backlight adjustment allows you to adjust its level depending on the external lighting conditions. So even in bright sunshine you will be able to clearly see the image on the device screen.

The 4th generation iPod touch is equipped with the Apple A4 processor, which is also used in the iPhone 4. It provides more stable operation and faster startup of the device. There is no GPS module, so the player determines its position using Wi-Fi networks. Just like the phone, it is now equipped with a gyroscope, which will provide more fun for active gamers.

The iOS 4 bootloader better supports the Bluetooth AVRCP protocol, so you can now manage tracks, adjust volume, and play the device from headsets and headphones that support A2DP.

When playing music, it is now possible to control the iPod touch with your voice through the built-in microphone thanks to the implemented Voice Control function. The sound of the device itself has also improved - a special port with a new speaker has been installed. This combination of a high-quality speaker and an omnidirectional microphone makes it possible to make Skype/VoIP calls without using a headset. Find a Wi-Fi hotspot and you're already connected.

iPod touch 4th generation has two cameras: front and rear. The front one is designed to capture an image of the user's face, and using the rear camera you can shoot video with a resolution of 720p (1280x720), which is a complete surprise for the player. A light sensor is located next to the lens, which improves the quality of shooting in low light.

Another pleasant innovation is the reduced weight of the device - now the player weighs only 101 grams. So Apple was able to pack as many features as possible into a small, lightweight package.

Meet the fast iPod touch 5G player

Imagine, this is not a marketing ploy, but a real fact. For the first time, the player can boast the performance of a full-fledged iPhone, albeit the 4S version.

Launched in October 2012, the iPod touch 5G immediately attracted attention. Now its body is made not of polished steel, but of rough aluminum, which is much more practical. In addition, it is available in colors: dark grey, silver, pink, blue, yellow and red.

The body has increased in height, but has lost some weight (123?59?6 mm), and the weight has decreased to 88 g. At the same time, the developers managed to increase the battery capacity to 1030 mAh, which allows you to listen to music for 40 hours or watch videos for 8 o'clock.

Among the controls, you can highlight the metal Power button on the top end, and the volume buttons on the left. On the back cover of the device there are: a protruding camera lens, a microphone hole, an LED flash, a plug for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth units, as well as a spring-loaded button for the Loop cord. On the bottom edge there is a 3.5 mm headphone connector, a Lightning port and a speaker behind neat holes.

The Retina display in the new iPod touch 5G is similar to the one installed on the iPhone 5, so the image quality is commendable. With a resolution of 1136x640 pixels and a pixel density of 326 DPI, it has amazing color reproduction, which is distinguished by natural colors and an amazing level of “black”.

Thanks to the wide viewing angle, you won't notice colors inverted on the IPS screen, and in bright sunlight it hardly fades. Add to this durable glass with an oleophobic coating, and you will understand how good the new player is in operation.

The device has two cameras: main and front. The main 5 MP camera, made on the basis of a 5-element lens, allows you to record video in 1080p quality at 30 frames/sec. The front FaceTime HD camera (1.2 MP) is more modest: 720p at 30 fps.

The hardware can please you with a dual-core Apple A5 processor (2 Cortex-A9 cores) with a clock frequency of 800 MHz and 512 MB of RAM. Depending on the model, the device is equipped with 32 or 64 GB of memory, which is enough for music, movies and many applications.

The device runs iOS 6 and after practical tests showed significantly increased performance. The new graphics subsystem provides good interface speed, fast launch of heavy applications and 3D graphics processing. The conclusion is clear - the new device is really good!

In honor of the recent update to the iPod line, I decided to take a dive into history and remember all the iPod models that came out from 2001 to the present day.

This will be a brief history of the iPod with photographs and a brief description, the most important nuances in my opinion. In particular, I will touch on the latest update to the iPod Touch in a little more detail.

The players are arranged in order of release.

There were only two iPod models: 5 and 10 gigabytes (and the 10 gigabyte version was not released immediately). The battery could last up to 10 hours. The classic iPod had a mechanical scroll wheel. The player weighed 184 grams. The first and last model that was supported exclusively by Mac OS.

In the second generation of iPod, the storage capacity was increased: 10 and 20 gigabytes. Touch scroll wheel. Some second-generation models were Windows-compatible through the Musicmatch Jukebox audio player program.

The third generation iPod became thinner and had a completely non-mechanical remote control. Player memory sizes: 10 GB, 20 GB, 30 GB, 40 GB. Due to the reduction in size, the model could only work for 8 hours without recharging.

The iPod Mini is an underwhelming series that only survived two generations. The first one was in production for 2 months. Important characteristics: 4 gigabytes of memory, weight 103 grams, 8 hours of battery life, touch scroll wheel, like in the third generation of the classic iPod, but with the ability to press it (additional actions - due to this, the 4 buttons above the wheel disappeared). The iPod Mini was sold in five colors (including gold).

Initially, the generation did not foretell any surprises. The first models were 20 and 40 gigabytes, had the same monochrome screen, but with an improved scroll wheel from the iPod Mini 1 Gen.

But on October 26, 2004, the Photo model with a color screen (220 by 176 pixels, 65,536 colors) went on sale. This model allowed photographs to be stored and displayed. Versions of 30 and 60 gigabytes appeared.

A little later, the model was slightly modified and called iPod Color. But the essence has not changed.

This tiny player gave a new experience to users, forcing them to listen to music completely at random. According to Apple, many users listened to music on their iPod in random order, which is why the first iPod Shuffle was created as a reflection of the trend.

Models with 512 megabytes or 1 gigabyte were available. The iPod Shuffle weighed a fantastic 22 grams and lasted 12 hours on a single charge.

Visually, it was practically no different from the first generation. A model with 6 GB memory has been added. The gold model has disappeared. Battery life has been improved to 18 hours.

The iPod Nano was designed to replace the iPod Mini and combine the best of the iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle. The model came in only two colors (white and black), weighed 42 grams and ran for 15 hours on battery power. Flash memory: 1, 2, 4 gigabytes. The display was 16 bit, resolution: 176 by 132.

The fifth generation is characterized by a complete redesign of the device, an enlarged screen for watching videos. Screen resolution 320 by 240 (QVGA). In 2006, after updating the model, the maximum memory capacity reached 80 gigabytes. Also, after updating the firmware, it became possible to run some games on the iPod.

The body of the iPod Nano is made of anodized aluminum. iPod Nano received 5 bright colors. Also for the first time, a red iPod appeared, from the sales of which $10 went to charity. The models were 2, 4, 8 gigabytes, and not all volumes were of all colors: for example, the 8 gigabyte model existed only in black and red versions.

October 2006- second generation iPod Shuffle

The miniature player has become even lighter - 15.6 grams. A clip appeared that made it possible to attach the player to clothing. Memory capacity: 1 or 2 gigabytes. 9 color schemes that were added over time.

It was produced in three versions: 80, 120, 160 gigabytes. The player worked from 30 to 40 hours on a single charge (audio), 5-6 hours (video). The front panel of the player was made of aluminum (previously it was made of plastic).

The model lived until 2014, when it was discontinued. This event marked the end of the era of the classic iPod.

September 5, 2007- third generation iPod Nano

The player has received cosmetic improvements. A brighter two-inch color display: 320 by 240. The iPod Nano received a new interface and support for new iPod games (Tetris, Ms. Pac-Man, Sudoku and others).

The first iPod with Wi-Fi and MultiTouch interface came out a little later than the first iPhone, as its more budget-friendly and stripped-down analogue. The player allowed you to purchase additional applications. The iPod Touch, like the iPhone, worked on iOS.

The iPod Touch in the first three generations had a 3.5-inch touch screen with a resolution of 480 by 320. There was only one Home button on the front panel. Battery life is 22 hours audio and 5 hours video.

In the fourth generation, the iPod Nano was again heavily redesigned: the player was stretched out again and the color scheme was completely changed. The iPod Nano added an accelerometer and landscape mode due to the vertical screen. Available models: 4 GB (limited in some markets), 8 GB and 16 GB.

Minor redesign. Important innovation: Bluetooth has been added. Battery life has been increased to 36 hours in audio mode and 6 hours in video mode.

The player was the first to use VoiceOver technology, which could voice the names of performers and song titles in 20 languages. For the first time in the series, support for multiple playlists. The player weighs a fantastic 10.7 grams. Memory capacity - 2 or 4 gigabytes.

In design, the fifth generation was very similar to the fourth. The screen was slightly enlarged to 376 by 220. A built-in video camera also appeared. There were models with 8 and 16 gigabytes to choose from.

The design has not changed. Among the important innovations: a microphone has been added to the new headphones that come with the kit. The processor performance and RAM capacity have been increased from 128 megabytes to 256. The VoiceControl voice control function has been added.

The player has become as miniature as possible. At the same time, it had a full-fledged bright touch screen (240×240), on which only one icon was placed. Video playback, camera and speakers have been removed. Weight - 21.1 grams. The same 8 and 16 gigabytes are available. The iPod Nano now has a clip (like the iPod Shuffle) and also adds the ability to attach a strap. Several options for displaying dials have been added to the interface. First signs of Apple Watch?

A triumph of minimalism in the series.

The smallest iPod model to date. It is still produced and sold successfully. It is in demand among athletes due to its size and the presence of a clip.

The player weighs 12.5 grams, the battery lasts for 15 hours of listening to music. Anodized aluminum body. The memory size is exclusively 2 gigabytes. In 2015, the player received a color redesign.

New sophisticated design with two cameras: for Face Time conversations and HD video shooting (720p). The screen, with the same dimensions, became more contrasty, the resolution increased to 960 by 640. Exactly the same Retina screen was used in the iPhone 4.

Apple switched from Samsung processors to its Apple A4. The iPod Touch added an accelerometer and a gyroscope. Ended support in iOS 6.1.6.

Exclusively for 16 gigabytes. The iPod Nano has been pulled out once again. Apparently the single-icon interface of the sixth generation was not a big success. The player weighs 31 grams. On April 15, 2015, the color scheme of the players changed.

The iPod Touch 5Gen received a higher contrast retina screen increased to 4 inches with a resolution of 1136 by 640. RAM was increased to 512 megabytes. Improved cameras. The rear camera allows you to shoot 1080p video and 8 megapixel photos. Finally, the iPod Touch has received several bright colors. Memory sizes: 16, 32, 64 gigabytes. The port for connecting to a computer and charging has changed - now the iPod Touch comes with a USB->Lightning cable.

The iPod Touch 5G has an Apple A5 processor, exactly the same as in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, which means it is comparable in performance to these devices. Supported by Apple up to iOS 9, released in the fall.

Well, the latest update to the iPod Touch happened quite recently. Visually, the model is completely similar to the fifth generation, but there are several important improvements and changes.

  • The processor in the iPod Touch 6Gen immediately became A8 (with an M8 coprocessor). It is the A8 and M8 that are installed in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
  • A 128 gigabyte variation of the iPod has gone on sale.
  • RAM doubled to 1 gigabyte
  • 5 updated colors: space gray, blue, pink, gold and silver.
  • 8 megapixel iSight camera and improved front HD FaceTime camera. The first question that arises is: is the camera comparable to the iPhone 6 camera? No, it’s a little worse and shoots at about the same level as the iPad Air 2.
  • In the 6th generation, the recess for attaching the lace was removed. Now you can’t hang the player on your hand...

Afterword

Here's an excursion into history. I'll dwell on the new iPod Touch for a moment.

The 6th generation of iPod Touch is a significant leap in performance. There is no redesign, because the 5th generation iPod Touch is already close to ideal in this regard. To be honest, the fifth-generation player is already starting to slow down on iOS 8.4 and iOS 9 (not surprising, given the weak processor). Therefore, Apple urgently needed to do something about it... They did. The result is a nice gadget with capabilities on par with the top-end iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Should I buy an iPod Touch 6 Gen or not? It's up to you to decide. The price of the player is 2-3 times less compared to the iPhone (depending on the amount of memory). The iPod Touch has always been a cheap alternative to the iPhone without calling capabilities or a GPS module. Now almost nothing has changed, it’s just that with this update Apple has greatly reduced the gap between the top devices in the lines. If you have an iPhone, I don’t see much point in buying an iPod Touch. If you need a high-quality music player with a good camera and the ability to install applications from the App Store, but finances do not allow you to look towards the iPhone, then the iPod Touch is a good investment.

Readers: What kind of iPod do you have? How do you use it?

16 years ago, on October 23, 2001, Apple introduced the iPod mp3 player, which later became the world's most popular portable audio player. The gadget not only “killed” massive players with audio cassettes and CDs, but also revolutionized the music player market.

First generation iPod
Apple promoted the first generation iPod with the slogan "1,000 songs in your pocket." The gadget is made in a compact white case, has 5 or 10 GB of user space and is equipped with a ClickWheel - a scroll wheel that allows you to quickly scroll through hundreds of songs. The iPod lasted up to 12 hours on a single battery charge and cost $399. The device attracted buyers so much that they were not bothered by the exotic FireWire port instead of USB, which limited the iPod's compatibility strictly with Apple computers.

Second generation iPod

The second generation of the famous player remained without external changes, but the size of the user space increased to 10 or 20 GB, depending on the modification, and the scroll wheel became touch-sensitive. Also, this version of the iPod was released in two versions - iPod for Windows and iPod for macOS.

Third generation iPod

The third generation of iPod underwent a major redesign - the scroll wheel remained in its usual place, and four large music playback control buttons appeared above it. This is the first iPod to use a 30-pin connector. The kit included a case with a belt clip, two plugs for the 30-pin port, and a docking station (except for the 10 GB model). Modifications of 10, 20 and 40 GB were on sale.

iPod mini

The next version of the iPod was the pass-through iPod mini, which was released on January 6, 2004. It is made in a compact case, received only 4 GB and was produced in several color options. In this version, the ClickWheel was changed again - control buttons were returned to the wheel.

On February 22, 2004, the second generation iPod mini was released. Apple installed a more capacious battery in the gadget, allowing it to play music for 18 hours, and also increased the amount of built-in storage to 6 GB.

Fourth generation iPod (iPod Photo)

The fourth generation iPod, also known as iPod Photo, was released in July 2004. At first the player was produced with a monochrome display, but in 2005 the company released iPod Photo with a color matrix capable of displaying 65 thousand colors. The user space capacity was 20 or 40 GB, and later 30 and 60 GB versions appeared.

First generation iPod shuffle

iPod shuffle has become Apple's simplest and cheapest player. The first shuffle was introduced on January 11, 2005 and was available with 512 MB or 1 GB of internal memory. Battery life - 12 hours. Weight - 22 grams.

iPod nano first generation

iPod nano was produced in three versions - with 1, 2 and 4 GB of user space. In addition to displaying track and album titles, the first generation iPod nano could display JPEG, BMP, GIF, and other image formats. A full battery charge lasted for 14 hours of music playback.

Fifth generation iPod (iPod Video)

On October 12, 2005, the iPod 5G, better known as iPod Video, was released. It became the first Apple player capable of playing video. Built-in memory sizes are 30, 60 and 80 GB. Battery life is almost 20 hours. Also, after updating the firmware, it became possible to run some games on the iPod.

iPod nano second generation

Compared to the first generation, it had double the memory (2, 4 or 8 GB), an improved anodized aluminum body and a brighter screen. The iPod came in several colors and could last up to 24 hours on a single charge.

The second generation Shuffle turned out to be completely different from its predecessor - it became three times smaller, and a clip appeared on the body, allowing it to be attached to clothing. The amount of user space is 1 or 2 GB. Produced in 9 colors.

Sixth generation iPod (iPod classic)

Beginning with the sixth generation, the iPod became known as the iPod classic. The volume of built-in memory (the player has a hard drive installed) is a record for those times: 80, 120 and 160 GB. Battery life - 30 hours of music playback and 5 hours of playback. For the 160 GB model, these figures are even higher - 40 and 7 hours, respectively. iPod classic was released.

The third generation of iPod nano received 4 and 8 GB of memory and increased operating time. The gadget also began to support video playback. In addition, the player received cosmetic improvements, as well as a brighter two-inch color display.

First generation iPod touch

The first iPod with Wi-Fi and MultiTouch interface came out a little later than the first iPhone. The player, like the iPhone, ran the iOS operating system. The iPod touch was equipped with a 3.5-inch touch display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels. Touch control has completely replaced ClickWheel and only the Home button remains on the front panel. The volume of built-in memory is 8 and 16 GB.

The fourth generation of iPod nano has undergone a major redesign: the player has been stretched and the color scheme has been completely changed. iPod nano now has an accelerometer and landscape mode. You could buy 4, 8 and 16 GB versions.

The gadget has changed a little in appearance, received a Bluetooth module and a more capacious battery. Operating time from a full battery charge is up to 36 hours in audio mode and 6 in video mode.

The player was the first to use VoiceOver technology, which could read artist names and song titles in 20 languages. For the first time, support for multiple playlists appeared. The player weighs only 10.7 grams. Memory capacity - 2 and 4 GB.

Apple slightly increased the display resolution to 376 by 220 and added a built-in camera. There were models with 8 and 16 GB of memory to choose from in eight body colors.

The design has not changed. The set includes new headphones equipped with a microphone. The processor performance and RAM capacity were also increased from 128 to 256 MB. The voice control function VoiceControl has appeared.

The player has become more compact, has a touch-sensitive color display with a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels, 8 or 16 GB of user space and a clip on the back panel, like in the iPod shuffle. The company decided to remove the camera and speakers present in the previous model. Weight - 21.1 grams. The player has become popular due to the ability to use it as a “smart” watch.

The player weighs 12.5 grams, a full battery charge lasts for 15 hours of listening to music, the body is made of anodized aluminum, and the built-in memory is 2 GB. In 2015, the company released an updated version of the player, which did not receive any innovations, except for several new body colors.

The gadget received two cameras: the main one for taking photos/videos and the front one for talking in FaceTime. The screen, with the same dimensions, has become more contrasty, and the resolution has increased to 960 x 640 pixels. The exact same Retina display was used in the iPhone 4. Support for the device ended with the release of iOS 6.1.6.

The iPod nano has been pulled out once again - it will no longer be a smart watch. The model was produced only with 16 GB of memory. The player weighs 31 grams. In April 2015, Apple released additional body colors.

The fifth generation iPod touch received a 4-inch display with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels, 512 MB of RAM, improved main and front cameras, a new processor and several bright colors. The volume of internal memory is 16, 32 and 64 GB. The iPod touch comes with a USB to Lightning cable. Player support ended with the release of iOS 9.

While outwardly the new player has absorbed all the best features of the fifth generation, in terms of performance it has left its predecessor far behind. The iPod received an A8 processor, an improved video chip and an 8-megapixel main camera. The maximum internal storage capacity has increased to 128 GB. The model is still relevant - you can install the latest iOS 11 on it.

That's it. Apple hasn't released a new iPod model since 2015. It is not known whether the company will forget about these devices or whether in the near future we will see, for example, the seventh generation iPod touch. The company recently stopped production and sales of the iPod nano and iPod shuffle players, and also closed the pages dedicated to them on the official website. What do you think, do users need such devices now? Does it make sense to revive the iPod classic or continue the iPod touch line?
