I have been suffering for about 2 weeks with a broken connection of the Zyxel Z-330W ee router
I came to the conclusion that new firmware causes the unit to overheat, followed by a disconnection
Now I'll try to switch to the old firmware, then we'll see what happens. If it doesn't help, I'll throw the fuck out of this router. Complete shit. And why did I choose it? For a pretty box?
Here is what insanity I found on the Internet (respect and respect for such quirks to the author):

Setting up and repairing the Zyxel P-330 zuxel

If the Zyxel 330 is buggy (namely, wi-fi is cut off but the internal hub works), then I did the following:

1. Flash Zyxel P-330 with the latest firmware. Take . It's probably been done by everyone. If not, then either we start the automatic update through the downloaded exe, or we go to the desired tab and manually upload the firmware

2. If this does not help, then carefully open the Zyxel P-330 (4 screws on the bottom UNDER THE LEGS!) And examine the capacitors for swelling. As a rule, the first large capacitor from the power input swells (in the figure it is designated as C1, but a new capacitor has already been soldered in, the old one must be soldered vertically and have a capacity of 1000 microfarads x 12 volts). We change him to capacitor 2200 microfarads x 12 volts from any faulty motherboard, since it is longer in height, we do a surface mounting by placing the new capacitor horizontally as shown in the photo. If possible, then it makes sense to solder the conder (from the motherboard) to 3300 microfarads x 12 or 16 volts(I note that there are batteries under it, which also get very hot and sometime their heating temperature will again ensure the loss of capacity of our capacitor).

Besides it is desirable to install radiators (R1 R2 R3) on the microcircuits, but for this you will have to move the capacitor C2 (47 microfarads x 16 volts, solder it and build up the legs with 3-4 cm wires, placing it as in the picture and shown) I note that there are several revisions of this access point where you may have to move not 1 but 2 capacitors). The chip under the R 2 heatsink gets especially hot. Any heatsinks from old motherboards will do.The photo shows that the R1 heatsink from the Pentium-1 is attached to the main processor, the R3 heatsink from the TNT video card is attached to the memory chips (you will need to saw off 5 mm from any edge), the R2 heatsink from the Abit Socket 462 motherboard to the hub processor (you will also need to cut off 5 mm from any edge).

3. Next you need set up the hotspot correctly. To do this, FROM THE CONNECTED COMPUTER BY TWISTED PAIR TO THE ACCESS POINT, open the browser and in it in the address bar we write 192.168.1.1, press Enter => a window appears enter the name = write admin and password 1234). At the same time, all computers of the configured network must already be turned on (in order to see them as active clients and immediately register them in the access point). I don’t consider the essence of setting up a point for a specific provider (login and password for connecting), it can be read anywhere, I’m already considering additional settings aimed at reducing Zyxel 330 glitches. To do this, after setting up for a specific provider, I do this -

a. We go to the section Wireless (Wireless network) and then Basic Settings: Here we put channel 10 (after making sure that there are no neighboring points on this channel! And if there is, then we change the channel to 3, etc.)

b . We go to the section LAN --> LAN Interface Setup. Here, first I press the SHOW DHCP Client button = we see the access point clients, from where I rewrite each IP and MAC address and then enter them line by line in the ADD DHCP Static (2) section where the MAC address is entered WITHOUT COLONS and after entering EACH CLIENT I press each time Save button remembering each client. (3). In this way each computer is assigned a strictly fixed IP address. and the access point will not sometimes) invent for half an hour what address to assign to the client.

3. I also turn off protection against DoS attacks. This is the first thing for any access point. To do this, I go to Advanced DoS Setting = Denial of Service where I uncheck the box next to Enable DoS Prevention = all other checkboxes will be automatically unchecked. Of course, then I press the Apple button

The setting for opening ports for specific computers is done here - Advanced -> Virtual Servers. To do this, we take the desired port that a specific program needs to work and drive it in together with the IP address of the computer that needs this port. If there are problems with polling mailboxes, we open ports for POP protocols. Like this (for torrent):

For trouble-free operation in 2p networks, to avoid memory overflow, the router has the ip nat session 1024 command, but it gives practically nothing, so you MUST go to the torrent client and already there limit the maximum total number of connections for one torrent to 64, and the number of downloads up to 8. In addition, you need to set the maximum number of connection attempts per second to a maximum of 5 connections per second. Also, to reduce the load from the router, I recommend that you register on the machines the DNS servers of the provider, and not the router.
There is also this - a routerless solution to the issue of torrents:.

Attention! If you need to limit the Internet speed on a specific computer in a network connected to the ZyXEL P-330W EE, then only newer models can do this - for example, ZyXEL P-334WT EE and higher. ZyXEL P330 always fraternally divides traffic into all, although it is quite correct without particularly infringing on someone's rights.

This access point has a trick - it is necessary Zyxel P-330set as high as possible, thus the signal coverage will be better. In addition, if the signal level is weak, then it makes sense to use Dlink cards and not Zuksel 302.

I repeat - if you need to limit the speed of one of the computers on the network, then you need to buy a more modern point Zyxel P-334, etc. The Zyxel P-330 cannot limit the rate on a particular port.

After the rework, the access point works for months without turning off without any freezes, etc. (it used to hang every two or three days)

if I helped or have questions, then any gift in Yandex bubble to the wallet 41001739487546 is accepted

Of the shortcomings of the access point, I will note
antiquity of the point created back in 2003
weak processor
heating electronics inside.
an amazingly long time without more or less bug-free firmware
no speed limit option for a specific user
mediocre power supply
far from the best efficiency of the Zuksel 302 card, which are recommended to be bought in the kit.
In a word, the zuksel is probably a thing of the past and today it is more practical to purchase an access point of the same Dlink for 1300 rubles than to bathe with such primitivism. and even more interesting access points from Asus (for example ASUS WL-500 g P, W)
I’ll finish with the phrase: in the P-330W max router, the number of entries when configured is from 10 to 25 (Static DHCP max 10; Static Route max 25; Virtual Servers = Wireless Trusted Stations = IP Filtering = MAC Filtering max 20; URL Filtering max 8)

Check internet connection speed test

PS How to find the MAC address(physical address) of your computer's network card in Xbox 360. To do this, you need to do the following:

  • Next to the clock in the (system tray) on the computer, you see the network connection icon (two monitors), right-click on it and select "Status" from the drop-down menu. Next, a window will open, it will have two tabs, you need the "Support" tab, go to it.
  • On this tab you will see the "Details" button, click on it and a window will open. The first item is the "Physical Address", also known as the MAC address, and we need it.
  • Next to the clock in the (system tray) on the computer, you see the network connection icon (two monitors), right-click on it and select "Network and Sharing Center" from the drop-down menu.
  • Next, you will open a window, find the "View status" link there, click on it and you will see a window in which you need to find the "details" button, after clicking on which you will see information about the status of your connection with the provider, you need the item "Physical address", remember it or rewrite it, it will need to be entered into the Xbox 360.

ZyXEL P-330W EE | Introduction

The number of cable networks in recent years in the cities of Russia and the CIS countries has been steadily growing, the subscriber bases of telecom operators are constantly increasing, more and more users are connecting, some are even reconnecting, leaving the category of "dial-up" boxes and "ADSL" boxes, being tempted by high speeds, low tariffs, round-the-clock access, on-net resources. In large cities, the user has the opportunity to choose from at least five available local providers that provide access via Ethernet technology. And if connecting one home computer is easy enough, then when connecting several machines, various difficulties and inconveniences can arise. One solution for such a connection is to purchase a SOHO class router (home office / small business office), which allows you to share a common channel to the Internet and the provider's network among several users in the apartment, and also supports various types of VPN tunnels, through which most providers authenticate users. One of the great many such routers is, and today it is in our test lab. Let's see what this device is capable of.

ZyXEL P-330W EE | Overview of the NetFriend utility

In this part of the article we will talk about the program ZyXEL NetFriend v1.2("Network friend"), designed for quick and easy setup of ZyXEL Internet equipment. The reason for the creation of this software product was a large number of requests from users of ADSL providers to technical support services. ZyXEL tried to solve the main problems faced by users when creating an Internet connection to ADSL providers and home Ethernet networks, so the "network friend" was born.

To set up your ZyXEL device using NetFriend, you need a Windows 2000/XP computer with an Ethernet port and a CD-ROM drive.

NetFriend technology includes a Windows application running on the user's computer and an "agent" integrated into the ZyXEL hardware. To use ZyXEL NetFriend, it is enough to know only the name of the provider and the tariff plan to which the user is connecting, the "network friend" will take care of all other problems. Together with the setting for the provider, NetFriend uses all the network security tools of the Keenetic to reliably protect your home network and computers from external threats.

At the time of writing, NetFriend v1.2 supported the following devices:

  • P-660R EE (Annex A);
  • P-660H EE (Annex A);
  • P-660HW EE (Annex A);
  • P-660HT EE (Annex A);
  • P-660HTW EE (Annex A);
  • P-660RT EE (Annex A);
  • P-660RU EE (Annex A);
  • P-660RU EE (Annex B);
  • P-330WEE;
  • P-2300RDLEE.

Let's set up our P-330WEE using NetFriend and try to find out the main features and features of the "net friend".

NetFriend is interactive and has a simple interface. At each stage of the configuration, NetFriend reports the current state of the process, prompts you to enter or confirm the necessary parameters. The transition to the next step occurs when you click on the "Next" button, return to the previous one - on the "Back" button. The "Exit" button is provided to exit the program.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

In the main menu, we see three main items: "Settings", "Change device access password", "Device diagnostics". When you select "Setup", NetFriend will perform an operation to configure your device. If you want to set an access password for your device and thereby increase security at work, select the "Change device access password" item. If you are having difficulty setting up or operating your device, NetFriend will help you create a report with diagnostic information for you to contact the ZyXEL Support Center. To do this, select the "Device Diagnostics" item. In our case, select "Settings".

Click on the picture to enlarge.

After successfully detecting the device, click the "Next" button. We are offered to choose the mode of using our Internet center.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

There are 4 connection options.

  • Internet center with dedicated Ethernet line connection- in this mode, all devices connected to the Keenetic, including wireless ones, can simultaneously use the Internet channel for work.
  • Internet center with connection to the provider via Wi-Fi- in this mode, the router establishes a wireless connection with the access point of the provider, and all home computer equipment is connected using the built-in switch.
  • Wireless hotspot- this mode is used to increase the coverage area of a previously created wireless network.
  • Wireless Ethernet Wi-Fi Adapter- this mode allows you to connect to your home network via Wi-Fi simultaneously up to five devices connected to the "LAN 1-4" and "WAN" connectors.

NetFriend allows you to not only solve problems with setting up an Ethernet and Wi-Fi connection, but also make extensive use of the device's wireless capabilities.

Let's configure the connection via a dedicated Ethernet line.

At the time of this writing, there are 100 providers in the list of "cities" for Russia. If the desired city/region or provider is not in the list, you can enter the connection settings manually. In this case, you can also fill special form on the ZyXEL website so that the settings of this provider will be added to the next versions of the NetFriend utility. Our provider was not in the list, and we select the "Configure manually" item.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

The next step in the configuration is the settings for connecting to an Internet provider. In this window, you must specify the basic settings for connecting with the telecom operator: IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS 1-3. You can get all these options from your ISP.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

If you have chosen the PPPoE protocol, then you need to enter your login and password. The service name is optional and you can leave it out if your ISP doesn't provide one. If the Secure Password flag is set, then the CHAP protocol is used for authorization, otherwise it is PAP.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

To access local resource servers in a city network when using PPPoE or PPTP protocols to access the Internet, you may need to set a list of static routes. This list is provided by the provider. To add a static route, click the "Add" button and enter the host's IP address and subnet mask.

NetFriend will make the necessary settings and control your Internet connection.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

If errors are found, the program will offer instructions for their elimination. If the connection setup was successful, the program will notify you about it.

NetFriend allows you to significantly reduce the number and complexity of the operations performed to configure the ZyXEL equipment and does not require the user to know how to establish a connection with the provider, except for the name of the provider, the name of the service, as well as login and password. Using NetFriend, an ordinary user saves not only his time and nerves, but also money.

Establishing a connection with the provider is not the only possibility of the NetFriend utility. This program also allows you to configure the wireless connection.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

Another NetFriend feature is "device diagnostics" - this item is used to prepare data when contacting ZyXEL technical support. In this case, the NetFriend utility creates a ZIP archive containing files with all device settings.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

The saved settings will be analyzed by the technical support service to assist the user of the device. You can submit the ZIP archive to ZyXEL specialists through the online consultation system, which is located at zyxel.ru/content/support/ . But if your Internet is down, how do you transfer the archive? In this case, you will have to look for other options for accessing the Internet.

NetFriend makes life much easier for the untrained user of ZyXEL equipment. The program has a clear and simple interface, all menu items are accompanied by tips. It is worth noting that the search for a device is carried out by its IP address, and not using broadcast requests, so in order to configure NetFriend, you will first have to reset the device settings using the "RESET" button. In November 2006, we tested ZyXEL P-660HTW EE, during which they experienced inconvenience due to the fact that the NetFriend utility did not provide the ability to manually specify the IP address of the managed device, which was reported to company representatives who promised to add this feature in future versions of the program. As we can see, NetFriend still does not have this feature, which can seriously complicate the process of installing ZyXEL equipment in an existing network.

ZyXEL P-330W EE | Overview of the web interface

In the previous section, we talked about the NetFriend Customizer in detail, in this chapter we will describe the features of the web configurator from ZyXEL. The built-in web configurator allows you to remotely control the Keenetic using a browser. To call the web configurator, you need to open a browser and enter "192.168.1.1" in the address bar, specify the username "admin", the password "1234". After this procedure, the "Status" screen will appear.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

This window contains basic information about the local network, Internet connection and wireless network. You can see the operating time of the device, the firmware version of your equipment.

Let us dwell in more detail on the main items of this menu. The first one is "Setup Wizard". This item is used to start the initial setup process, it includes general setup, setting up a wireless network, setting up credentials provided by the provider.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

Internet Center ZyXEL P-330W can operate in four modes.

  • "Gateway" (gateway)- Internet center with dedicated Ethernet line connection.
  • "Wireless ISP" (wireless provider)- Internet center with connection to the provider via Wi-Fi.
  • "Access Point" (access point)- Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • "Wireless Bridge" (wireless bridge)- Wi-Fi wireless Ethernet bridge.

Select the "Gateway" mode and click "Next".

Click on the picture to enlarge.

Let's deal with the wireless settings. First, we are offered to set the basic parameters. You must select the mode of operation of our access point. "2.4 GHz (B+G)" provides the best compatibility, the other two modes are used to connect to the wireless LAN only 802.11b and 802.11g clients.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

Let's go to the "LAN" tab. This tab allows you to configure the LAN DHCP server, manage IP addresses, and divide the physical network into logical networks. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a network protocol that allows computers to automatically obtain an IP address and other settings needed to operate on a TCP/IP network. To do this, the computer contacts a special server called a DHCP server. The network administrator can set the range of addresses distributed among computers. This avoids manual configuration of computers on the network and reduces the number of errors.

Consider configuring the basic wireless settings.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

In the basic wireless settings, you can select the device operation mode (access point or client), set the channel number used by the Keenetic. Unfortunately, it is not possible to set the client mode when using the "Gateway" mode. In this window, you can also see the active clients connected at the moment.

In the remaining sections of the menu dedicated to the wireless network, you can scan the network, configure connection security, and filter the MAC addresses of reliable wireless network stations.

Through the web interface, you can configure not only various types of connections, but also a number of additional parameters provided by the ZyXEL developers.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

The first one is access control. This screen is used to block access to certain Internet services based on the port number. Used to restrict Internet access to certain applications. There is provision for filtering traffic of two protocols TCP and UDP, but ICMP is not supported. There is no filtering on the source IP address and destination of the packet, which significantly reduces the functionality of the firewall. All created rules apply to all users located in the router's local network.

The device also has several more types of filtering: by IP address, by MAC address, by URL string. IP address filtering allows a computer with a specific IP address located on the local network to deny access to the external network (WAN network). Filtering by MAC address is essentially similar to filtering by IP address - you must specify the MAC address of the computer whose access to the external network (WAN network) will be denied.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

The web configurator provides the ability to use dynamic DNS. In fact, this service is a specialized DNS server that serves a specific second-level domain, which allows its reconfiguration by users registered on it, and is configured so that changes to it propagate over the Internet as quickly as possible. If you have a static IP address on the WAN, you cannot use dynamic DNS. You will need to register to use this service.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

The Keenetic maintains an event log that can be organized but not saved. Unfortunately, no firewall rules are logged, only system events.

Overview of graphical configuration interfaces P-330WEE we end here and move on to a brief overview of the router command line.

ZyXEL P-330W EE | Brief overview of the command line

You can connect to the device using the telnet client built into the operating system, or you can take something more specialized (for example, PuTTY). I would like to note right away that only one control telnet session is possible per unit of time, it will not work to connect with a second remote terminal. Moreover, even the connection in which the password prompt "hangs" is considered "live". Here we already have a kind of DoS attack. We left the password prompt hanging all night (more than 12 hours) and in the morning we also could not log in with the second session, which indicates that there is no timeout waiting for the password to be entered, which can threaten to completely block access to the device command line by a malicious user. A similar situation is observed with the web-interface. According to the manufacturer, this error has been fixed in new firmware versions.

After entering the password correctly, we get access to the command interface. This is not a Cisco-like interface, which can somewhat complicate the process of configuring the device for adherents of the classic command line. Commands and their groups are available: ?, reload, help, sys, ip, wlan, wan and exit.

We will consider only the most interesting, in our opinion, teams. The first text command reload allows you to reboot the device. We did not find analogues of this command in the web interface.

To get information about the device and the current firmware, type sys atsh.

The device operation mode is set using the sys operation line.

Setting up the wireless interface and external port P-330WEE produced at "wlan" and "wan", respectively. Other settings can, one way or another, be reproduced from the web configurator. The available commands are listed below.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

We conclude this brief overview of the command line and move on to testing.

ZyXEL P-330W EE | Testing

Traditionally, we begin the testing section with setting the boot time, by which we mean the time interval between the moment the device is powered up and the first response to the ICMP request. For loading time is 31 seconds.

We also measured the surface temperature of the router, which turned out to be 45°C.

Checking the security of the device using Positive Technologies XSpider 7.5 (Demo Build 2000) revealed only three open TCP ports (23, 53, 80), but no vulnerabilities were found for services on these ports. More "pleased" reaction P-330WEE on ICMP messages "Source Quench" and "Destination Unreachable". Below is the output of a security scanner with this vulnerability. By the way, I would like to note right away that this is perhaps the first ZyXEL device that did not reboot out of the box during such a scan.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

Now we need to check how fast the device can transfer data. For testing, we used a desktop computer and a laptop, the main parameters of which are given below.

A laptop Tablet PC Computer #1 Computer #2
OS Windows 2000 SP4Eng Windows XP SP2Eng Windows Vista64 Ultimate Windows 2003 Server SP2
CPU Intel Pentium M 1.3 GHz Intel Pentium M 1.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz Intel Celeron D 3.2 GHz
Motherboard Arima CO (i855GM/GME) Asus P5GDC Pro ECS P4M800Pro-M2
Memory Samsung 256 MB (DDR) Samsung 1 GB (DDR2) Hyundai 2 GB (DDR2) Hexon 512 MB (DDR2)
Net Realtek RTL8139/810x
Intel Pro Wireless LAN 2100 3B
Intel PRO Wireless 2200/2915 Marvell Yukon 88E8053 3COM 10/100 Mini PCI Ethernet Adapter
VIA Rhine II Compatible Fast Ethernet Adapter

At first we decided to connect computers directly, "raise" PPTP and measure the transmission speed through the tunnel. To measure the transfer speed, we used several running utilities netcps. The total transfer rate was about 85 Mbps, which, in our opinion, should be enough for testing. So we connected P-330WEE in the gap between a laptop and a desktop computer, we measured the transfer speed. The results were simply amazing: the transfer rate from LAN to WAN was only 31 Mbps (left side of the graph), and even less in the opposite direction - only 30 Mbps (right side of the graph). With simultaneous flow in both directions, the total speed was 33 Mbps (middle part of the graph). The received data surprised us, to put it mildly, because even our old D-Link DI-604 gave out high speeds. The channel loading schedule is shown below.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

We then "broke" a PPTP connection from the router's WAN port to a Windows Vista machine directly connected to it. We set up a connection without using MPPE (as, for example, in Corbin) and measured the speed. The measured speed was 3.1 Mbps and practically did not depend on the direction of the transmitted data. This will be clearly not enough for high-speed tariffs provided in Moscow, for example, by the same Corbina, and in Krasnogorsk near Moscow, for example, by RedNet. Then we connected to the second computer on which the server operating system was installed, but again we got the same speeds with PPTP.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

We were interested in the question of what will happen to the data transfer rates if we use MPPE for the PPTP connection. The speed turned out to be even lower - 1.3 Mbit / s, that is, the channel "sags" more than 2 times. Processor P-330WEE obviously not enough for data processing. I wonder what speeds this router would show if it also carried out full-featured parsing of packets using access lists (ACLs)?

Click on the picture to enlarge.

After the testing was done and the article was almost ready, we found a new firmware version on the official ZyXEL website (3.60(AMJ.1)D0), for which the information below was provided.

We downloaded the specified version and "updated". After the update, we again decided to measure the speed. Routing was also performed at speeds close to 30 Mbps, but we were shocked by the changes in PPTP performance. First, we tested the data transfer rate with "upgraded" MPPE encryption. Measurements were made using several simultaneously running netcps utilities.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

True, there were some unpleasant surprises - just look at a barely noticeable third of the graph below. This is not no transmission, but WAN->LAN data transmission. After that, we stopped the test with netcps and decided to just download a large file using NetBIOS. And the speed was 16 Mbps. Probably, in the new firmware, acceleration occurs when transferring large packets.

Click on the picture to enlarge.

Next, we decided to measure the speed of network access through the wireless segment, that is, WLAN (WEP 64), using our tablet PC. It turned out that data is transmitted from the wired part of the network to the wireless at a speed of 10 Mbps, and in the opposite direction - 11 Mbps. If we organize the flow in both directions at the same time, we will get a total speed equal to 19 Mbps. In principle, these are normal speeds, but, of course, for those who like to squeeze all the capabilities of the P-330W EE out of WLAN, it will not be enough.

In conclusion, I would like to start by explaining to readers the meaning of the words Link DUO indicated on the box with the router and in the instructions for it. ZyXEL understands by this term only that with the help of P-330WEE you can simultaneously access the Internet through a tunnel (PPTP) and local ISP resources that are not accessible through a tunnel. Link DUO does not mean that there are two physical WAN interfaces. WAN is here alone. Other manufacturers of network "iron" this "technology" is implemented in the form of the correct routing.

We were dissatisfied with the tested ZyXEL router. And this is despite the fact that the router withstood the "attacks" from XSpider. Below are the strengths P-330WEE .

  • Ease of setting up for a specific provider, if it is on the list of known ones;
  • can act both as a wireless client and as an access point;
  • high data transfer rate over an unencrypted PPTP tunnel (only with the new firmware version);
  • resistance to attacks.

The negative aspects include the following.

  • Extremely poor options for configuring firewall rules;
  • low data transfer rates;
  • overcharge.

The capabilities of this router are not enough to fully load ISP channels when working on high-speed tariff plans.

At the time of publication of the article, buy a router P-330WEE in virtual stores in Moscow it was possible for $75.
