    Follow the troubleshooting tips.

    Checking files in the cleanest environment.

The following sections describe some areas worth learning about.

Where is the file stored?

Moving a file to local computer will help determine if there is a problem with the file or in which the file is saved. Some problems may occur when saving an Excel file over a network or on a web server. It is recommended to save the file locally. This should be done in following cases:

Redirecting the Documents folder to the server location

Open files from SharePoint or Webfolder

LibreOffice is good in everything, but there is only one parameter in which it lags behind its competitor - Microsoft Office. It's about about the speed of loading and opening documents. Anal slaves of Microsoft like to give an example of how they allegedly opened a document in a non-native Libra DOCX format and it took many times longer to open than in MS Office. So, this is not a bug, this is a feature!

It turns out that the LibreOffice developers have created such an ideal office suite that easily surpasses MS Office even in terms of speed. But out of respect for the owners of old computers, they installed modest system requirements for the caching subsystem. Whereas the Indian from Microsoft does not care about the suffering of users of leisurely computers. “Let these beggars save for new computer for my wonderful office suite”, - this is probably what the Microsoft CEO thought. But what about those users who have powerful computers? It turns out that there is a very simple way to overclock Libra significantly.

How to speed up LibreOffice

Open Writer, in the “Tools” menu look for the “Options” item. On the “Memory” tab we see a page with caching settings. By default, the cache is very modest. Only 20 MB per graphic objects and 5 MB - maximum size one object. Will you be able to accelerate with these settings? If you open a document with many illustrations and complex objects, then the cache limit will be instantly reached and then the brakes will begin. There is no point in allocating 20 MB for cache if you have 8 or 16 gigabytes of RAM installed on your computer. So we increase the parameters without regret. It is also recommended to increase the number of built-in objects that will be cached. You can slightly reduce the number of undo steps. By default there are 100 of them, but few people press Undo that many times. We tighten it up, reboot, voila!

Java Runtime in LibreOffice

Oh yes, disabling the Java Runtime will also give a noticeable performance boost. Do not close the previous window, go to the “Advanced Features” tab and uncheck the “Use virtual machine Java". Java is an eternal brake and our Libra does not need this crutch.

It is simply impossible to imagine a modern PC without the Office editor package. It is used in work, study, business for the most different tasks: creating texts, tables, presentations and so on. Therefore, many decide to always have with them full set tools.

However, users often encounter problems incorrect operation programs. For example, it freezes when opening a file. Or a file with a small weight takes a very long time to launch. And low performance and constant freezes can completely ruin all the work. What to do?

Technical problems with MS Office

The first and most banal thing is technical specifications. Since Office is a program, it has its own requirements for computer power. And if the PC does not comply with them, then this can lead to slow work, failures and errors. Therefore, before installing the package, check if everything matches technical requirements. Fortunately, almost all modern PCs and laptops can easily cope with such a load. Therefore, this problem is extremely rare. So if Word doesn’t open or Excel crashes, then you need to look in a different direction.

Software problems with MS Office

A more common source is errors in files and the program itself. What to do here? First of all, you can try to remove the File Validation Add-in component that checks files. You can find it in the “Add or Remove Programs” tab in the Office control panel. This should solve the problem. If Word or Excel still takes a long time to open files over the network or is slow, then do the following:

  • open the Users folder;
  • find the Microsoft folder along the path “AppData\Roaming\”;
  • in the “Templates” folder, delete the “Normal” file (it won’t hurt to save it separately first).

Just in case, after these manipulations, restart your PC. You can also additionally clean your PC from viruses and old files on your hard drive through the built-in system tools.

Didn't help? Then it is possible that the Microsoft Office 2010 registry is to blame. In this case, you need to take the following steps:

  • click "Start";
  • in the search bar (or by clicking “Run”), enter regedit;
  • in the new menu, open the branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\Open Find;
  • select “Edit - New” and click the “DWORD Value” button;
  • enter the character set “EnableShellDataCaching” and confirm the action;
  • on new entry right-click, select “Change” and enter 1 in the “Value” column, save the result.

Then restart your PC. If your MS Office 2010 registry is slow, then this method is the most effective.

If this does not help, then there is only one thing left: completely uninstall the Office package, delete the accompanying files special utility and spend clean install again.
