Sound card with two outputs. All about sound cards

To enable audio playback devices to function, your computer or laptop requires a sound card, also called an audio card. Such devices can be external or internal.

They are also distinguished by connection type: USB, PCI, PCI-E, FireWire, ExpressCard, PCMCIA. Buying a sound card for a computer is a difficult task that requires knowledge of the exact characteristics of the device in which it will be installed.

What is a sound card

An audio card is a sound card responsible for creating, converting, amplifying, and editing the sound reproduced by a personal computer, laptop, or any other similar device. Maps are divided into several classes according to the nature of their location:

  • external;
  • internal;
  • internal with external module.

Why do you need a sound card?

A sound card is needed for the correct, accurate and timely reproduction of sounds requested by computer programs and the device’s operating system through speakers and headphones. Without it, a computer or laptop will not be able to send any sound signal to external playback modules, since there is no other component with similar functions.

Device

A computer sound card consists of several related hardware systems responsible for collecting, producing, and processing audio data. The purpose of the two main audio systems is to “audio capture” and work with music: its synthesis, playback. The device's memory is accessed directly via a coaxial or optical cable. Sound generation occurs in a digital signal processor (DSP): it plays certain notes, adjusts their tone and frequency. The power of the DSP and the total amount of available notes is called polyphony.

Types of sound cards

You can find audio cards on the market in a shockproof, waterproof case. This type is better suited for connecting an advanced audio system and running powerful games. Separate boards and integrated audio cards are a more standard solution, characterized by average parameters. Cards are divided into three types according to the possibility of dismantling and location relative to the device:

  • integrated;
  • internal discrete;
  • external discrete.

How to choose a sound card

To find a suitable audio card for a laptop or computer, pay attention to the following criteria when choosing:

  1. Form factor. This is also the type of location. An external card is needed only in certain cases, and an internal card is not suitable for every device.
  2. Playback sampling rate. Audio file formats may have different requirements for the frequency of the synthesized waveform. For a standard MP3 file you need 44.1 kHz, and for the DVD format it is already 192 kHz.
  3. Signal/noise level. The higher the value, the better the sound. Standard sound is from 70 to 80 decibels, ideal is about 100 dB.

External

The discrete sound card is designed to connect powerful professional audio systems that create almost perfect sound. It is also suitable for fans of computer games in which the sound component plays a large role. Important parameters:

  1. Frame. Any external module is subject to potential danger. The shell must be made of impact-resistant material.
  2. Connectors and number of channels. The more types the better. Not all audio systems use standard jack, mini-jack, micro-jack outputs.

Internal

The choice of an internal audio card or board is based mainly on the availability of a slot for it or the type of attachment to the motherboard, but there are other criteria:

  1. Connection type. The PCI connector was used in older motherboard models; most manufacturers have replaced it with PCI-Express. First, find out which connector is supported by your computer.
  2. Mounting type. Internal cards can be discrete or integrated. To install the latter, you may need the help of a computer technician.

Video

Almost every novice musician has encountered the problem of choosing a sound card. Long gone are the years when everyone had the same sound card - Sound Blaster! Today, the range of equipment is simply huge, but choosing the right sound card option from this variety is not an easy task.

A little history.

Previously, most computers did not have a separate sound card, and many did not even think about outputting sound from a PC. Others could buy the only model on the market in those early years - the same SB from Creative. And the map really looked like a map.

Years have passed, and now sound cards look like boxes of various sizes with a bunch of different “spinners” that look almost the same to an inexperienced user.

Today we will learn to understand this diversity, select equipment in relation to your tasks, and buy what you really need.

Types of sound cards

Let's divide sound cards into conditional categories (this will make it easier for us to understand them), look at who each group is intended for and what basic functionality it has. This will help us determine what equipment is needed to perform exactly the tasks that you set for yourself.

1. Let's start with perhaps the simplest category of sound cards. These are devices designed to replace the circuit breaker built into the motherboard in laptops and personal computers. They usually have a fairly small housing, often with a USB cable that is not disconnected. The main task of these devices is to output sound from the computer. Optionally, there is the ability to connect a microphone/guitar, headphones. The quality of these devices is far from professional, but they are superior to the notorious AC97.

Such devices will help if the sound card in your laptop suddenly fails, or if you need to output sound to an external device with quality and delays superior to RealTek.

Examples of such sound cards are the UCA series cards from Behringer, U24XL and UGM96 from ESI.

2. The next category is larger in size and has wider functionality. These sound cards already have on board a microphone preamplifier (often with phantom power), a high-impedance guitar input, and a headphone jack. Can provide Direct Monitoring, etc. However, these are still portable devices that can be taken with you, for example, to the park to play music outdoors. They do not need external power, and the functionality is more than enough for most electronic musicians, aspiring rappers and independent composers. This group of devices will also be of interest to YouTube bloggers, because most of them hardly need to connect more than one microphone. The quality of the converters of these devices is a step higher, and the presence of a microphone preamplifier with phantom power will allow you to achieve a more transparent sound of vocals and more intelligible speech recording.

3. The third broad category consists of two-channel devices, which have 2 inputs and 2 outputs as standard. This group includes both budget and much more expensive sound cards. In fact, they differ slightly from the previous group. The presence of two full-fledged inputs (often on combined connectors) allows you to simultaneously record 2 microphones, or 2 guitars, or a synthesizer/piano in stereo. Some devices in this group have not 2, but 4 outputs, which allows you to connect 2 pairs of monitors in a small studio or send sound to an external effects processor. Also interesting are devices that have additional digital S/P-DIF connectors, which can be used to connect external devices, excluding conversion to analog.

M-audio M-Track, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2/2i4, Behringer UMC202/UMC204, Steinberg UR22/UR242, Roland Duo/Quad-capture - popular and beloved devices by many that are perfect for a small home studio or for musicians who need to write 2 channel at the input simultaneously.

4. We have come to the most functional, most powerful category of ZK. These are multi-channel interfaces, most often made in a rack or half-rack housing, with a bunch of different buttons, lights, knobs, and from a distance they look like an airplane control panel.

This category includes both budget devices, for example, Behringer FCA1616, M-audio M-Track Quad, Tascam US 4*4/US 16*08, Focusrite Scarlett 18i8, Presonus audiobox 1818vsl, and professional audio interfaces from RME, Universal Audio , Avid, Prism sound, allowing you to record about 12–30 channels simultaneously. The cost of such equipment can reach hundreds of thousands of rubles, so these devices are mainly chosen by professional studios. Devices in this class are equipped with high-quality microphone preamplifiers that provide transparent and neutral sound. Such devices are characterized by low latency when working with audio. If you are a professional musician, if you need to write a live drum kit, choir, ensemble - these devices are just for you.

Additional functions.

Now that we've dealt with device groups, let's look at what additional functions they may have, the presence or absence of which will help you decide on the choice of interface:

Not all devices are equipped with mic preamps with phantom power, so if you plan to use a condenser microphone, having one is a must;

Not all devices are equipped with an instrument input, if you record only vocals, if you are a video blogger or a rap artist, this may not matter to you. For guitarists, this input is vital;

Some devices may have not one, but two headphone outputs, which will be very useful when recording vocals.

For some musicians, devices with a built-in DSP processor can be very useful. This processor will allow you to apply some effects without connecting an external processor. The list of possible effects is usually limited to a couple of reverbs, a compressor and an equalizer, but this is often enough.

Separately, I would like to note the Universal Audio Apollo devices, which have up to four DSP processors on board, with the ability to use various plug-ins. In the UA store you can purchase high-quality reverbs, equalizers, compressors, tape emulators and other effects processors. They work on these cards with virtually no latency, allowing you to enrich the sound of your work.

Apollo 8 Thunderbolt 2 audio interface

Finally.

Summarizing the above, when choosing an interface you need to decide on the following parameters:

Number of inputs/outputs. Do you need to write yourself a loved one or a choir?
- Their configuration. Are we recording with a condenser microphone, a guitar, or both?
- Availability of separate controls for the main mix and headphones.
- Multiple headphone outputs.
- Availability of digital inputs/outputs, MIDI interface, S/PDIF, ADAT.
- Ability to work without a power supply.
- Availability of DSP processor.
- Convenient drivers, additional software.

By answering these questions, you can easily choose a sound card that best suits your requirements, has all the necessary functionality at the moment, and maybe even has some reserve for the future.

For many musicians using personal computer-based sound studios, a regular sound card with a stereo input and stereo output is quite sufficient. However, sometimes in some cases a larger number of physical audio inputs and outputs is required, and then special multi-channel audio interfaces cannot be avoided.

First of all, it should be said that on the boxes of many modern sound cards there is an inscription “multi-channel output” or something like that. However, as a rule, the presence of four, five or even six outputs on multimedia sound cards means nothing more than support for surround sound decoding mode. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to use such outputs in any other way without making changes to the design of the sound card.

Of course, you can install two or even three sound cards in one computer, but working with such a system will not be very convenient, and the computer’s system resources are not unlimited. In addition, the cost of such a solution, when using more or less decent boards, will not be much lower than in the case of purchasing one multi-channel one.

What are multi-channel audio interfaces for?

The need to use a multi-channel audio interface may be due to various reasons. For example, four-track professional VCRs require four physical inputs and outputs. Many musicians use external equipment - processing modules, synthesizers, etc., and in order to work with these devices in real time, additional physical inputs and outputs will also be needed.

Types of multi-channel audio interfaces

According to tradition in the recording industry, the number of channels in professional devices is a multiple of four. When it comes to computer audio interfaces, these are usually four- or eight-channel systems. There are also models with different numbers of inputs and outputs (for example, younger models of Echo sound cards have two inputs and eight outputs).

Structurally, multi-channel audio interfaces are most often made of two components - a board installed in a PCI slot, and an external switching unit connected to the board using a special cable. There are also solutions for mobile computers in which, instead of PCI cards, PC Card format adapters are used, connected to an external switching unit. However, such products are more likely to be classified as exotic, since the cost of such adapters is much higher than similar solutions based on PCI cards. In addition, the characteristics of not every laptop will allow you to effectively use the capabilities of a multi-channel audio interface.

The external unit contains input and output connectors, and in some cases additional controls (controls and switches) and indications.

In such products you will not find minijack connectors - as a rule, switching of external analog devices is done using RCA (“tulips”), full-length quarter-inch “jacks” or XLR connectors. Professional-grade cards are necessarily equipped with symmetrical analog inputs and outputs. Quite often, along with analogue ones, digital inputs and outputs of the electrical coaxial and/or optical S/PDIF interface are also provided. In devices of this class, working with a digital signal of 96 kHz/24 bit format has become the de facto standard. There are also models that support multi-channel digital stream input and output (for example, in ADAT format). In some cases, a professional version of the digital interface is installed - AES/EBU (or at least the possibility of connecting it is provided).

Quite often, multichannel sound cards are equipped with a MIDI interface. For applications that require synchronization with external devices, the presence of a Word Clock BNC connector will be very useful.

Below are brief descriptions of budget solutions for personal and home studios currently offered by the most well-known manufacturers. The upper price level of the described devices is $550 (at retail prices on the Russian market).

Aardvark

Direct Pro LX6 is made in the form of a PCI card and an external switching unit, which are connected to each other by a two-meter cable. The external unit has four balanced analog inputs (on quarter-inch jack connectors) and six analog outputs, four of which are also balanced (on quarter-inch jack connectors), and two more are unbalanced (on RCA connectors). Judging by the Monitor inscription, these two outputs are intended for connection to the control path (monitors). On the front panel there is a headphone jack with a volume control, which also controls the signal level at the monitor output. A MIDI interface is also provided, represented by two connectors: input and output. The RCA input and output connectors for the S/PDIF digital electrical interface are located on the cover plate of the board itself.

Direct Pro LX6 uses ADCs and DACs that operate at sampling rates up to 96 kHz and bit resolution up to 24 bits. The level of each input can be switched between +4 dBu and –10 dBV (in the latter case, the input operates in single-ended mode). The input sensitivity setting range is 30 dB and is configured from the software control panel. Simultaneous recording from four inputs is provided (this can be either four analog inputs or a combination of two analog and two digital).

One of the distinctive features of Direct Pro LX6 is the presence of a built-in effects processor, which allows for sound processing in real time. In particular, there is a compressor, a three-band equalizer for each channel and a master reverb common to all channels. These effects can be used both for processing the recorded signal and only for monitors.

Echo

The production of professional and semi-professional audio interfaces is the main activity of Echo Digital Audio Corporation2 (http://www.echoaudio.com/). The model names of the sound cards it produces are very original, since they are nothing more than women's names.

If we talk about budget multi-channel devices, at the moment they are represented by two models - Darla24 ($395) and Gina24 ($450). Despite the fact that in June of this year it was announced that the production of Darla24 would be discontinued, this model is still on sale.

Both systems are designed as a PCI card and an external unit connected to the card using a special cable, and allow working with digital audio in 96 kHz/24 bit format. They are equipped with two balanced analog inputs and eight balanced analog outputs (made on quarter-inch jack connectors and located on the external switching unit). The DAC and ADC of these cards are made using a 24-bit architecture with 128-fold oversampling, and the digital signal processing procedures are assigned to a specialized Motorola processor.

The more expensive Gina24, in addition to working with analog audio, also provides input and output of signals in digital form. Its external unit has an input and output of an electrical coaxial S/PDIF interface (on RCA connectors), as well as an input and output of a digital optical ADAT interface. In addition, unlike Darla24, the front panel of the switching unit has a headphone output equipped with a volume control.

M-Audio

This trademark belongs to the well-known company MIDIMan (http://www.midiman.com/).

Thanks to its quick response to changes in market conditions, this company manages to quickly fill empty niches in the market for professional and semi-professional audio equipment. Multi-channel audio interfaces M-Audio budget series are represented by two models - Delta 44 and Delta 66.

The Delta 44 ($290) has four analog inputs and four analog outputs (on quarter-inch jacks) that can operate in either balanced or unbalanced mode. The connectors are located on an external switching unit, connected to the board using a special cable. Provides operation with a 96 kHz/24-bit signal in full duplex mode.

Delta 66 ($390) has a similar design, but along with four pairs of analog inputs/outputs it is also equipped with a digital interface. The RCA input and output connectors of the electrical coaxial digital interface S/PDIF are installed directly on the board blank.

The switching capabilities of Delta series boards can be expanded using the MIDIMan Delta OMNI I/O block ($259). You get two inputs with high-quality microphone amplifiers, four additional stereo inputs, an external effects line, two headphone outputs and meters. Purchasing a Delta OMNI I/O unit will, in many cases, eliminate the need for an additional mixing console.

Marian

Four-channel semi-professional audio interfaces from the German company Marian (http://www.marian.de/) MARC 4 series are attractive primarily for their price - $255. Unlike most other products discussed in this review, all connectors of Marian MARC 4 boards are located directly on the plug . Two pairs of analog unbalanced inputs and outputs are made on quarter-inch jack connectors. The ADC and DAC manufactured by AKM used in these boards provide operation with a 96 kHz/24-bit signal.
